A Call for Mental Health Reform in Atlantic Canada: Addressing a System in Crisis

The recent incident in Moncton’s youth psychiatric ward is not just an isolated event—it is a symptom of a much larger problem. This is not simply about one child being placed in unsafe conditions despite warnings. It is about the systemic failure of mental health care in Atlantic Canada, where patients are too often treated as liabilities rather than individuals in need of care, healing, and dignity.

The evidence is all around us. Homelessness is on the rise, many of those affected battling untreated or inadequately treated mental health issues. Resources are scarce, and the stigma surrounding mental health silences those who need help the most. Patients and their advocates find themselves stonewalled by a system that seems more focused on protecting its own staff—doctors, nurses, and administrators—than on addressing the very real and urgent needs of the people it serves.

Mental health care in Atlantic Canada is failing, and it’s failing on multiple levels:

1.Patients are dismissed and disbelieved, labeled as “crazy” without proper investigation.

2.Transparency and accountability are absent, making it nearly impossible to advocate for meaningful change.

3.Funding is woefully inadequate, leaving facilities under-resourced and staff overwhelmed.

4.Stigma perpetuates silence, pushing these issues into the shadows where they fester rather than heal.

The Moncton incident provides concrete evidence of this failure. It highlights how the lack of oversight and accountability leads to poor decisions—decisions that put lives at risk. But this isn’t just about one incident. It’s about the systemic neglect of mental health patients and the need for transformative action.

What Needs to Happen:

1. Accountability: Transparency must become the cornerstone of mental health care. Facilities and staff must be held accountable for decisions that endanger patients.

2. Funding and Resources: Mental health care needs significant investment, not just in facilities but in training, staffing, and community-based supports to prevent crises before they escalate.

3. Breaking the Stigma: Mental health must be treated with the same seriousness and urgency as physical health. Education and open conversations are key to dismantling the stigma that silences so many.

4. Advocacy and Oversight: Patients and their advocates need pathways to be heard and to hold the system accountable. Independent oversight bodies should be established to investigate incidents and ensure standards of care are met.

This is not just a call for change—it’s a demand. Patients deserve to be treated with dignity and care. Communities deserve to see their loved ones receive the help they need. And Atlantic Canada deserves a mental health care system that heals rather than harms.

The Moncton incident is proof of the system’s failure. Now, we must ask: what will we do to fix it?

Update 1: so contacted DTI, who put me on touch with NB early childhood and education. They required I first start with the anglophone district office before they will look at it. No answers at their number so left a voicemail. The principal was connected when I called the school this morning, they took all the details and told me they would reach out to me. They didnt have an answer as to how this happened, and they couldn't explain policy or procedures as to how this is prevented in the first place.

We had something similar happen before where they just forgot to drop her off, and brought her back to school which wasn't as big of a deal.

This Friday, the driver went past our house completely. We're the last stop before it has to turn around and go down a side street, but they just went down the Edit for clarity side street turn without passing/stopping and turning around at our house. They did 2 more stops, and at the 3rd stop, the student who got off said to my daughter she could get off with him, and the mother of the boy recognized her. She asked the driver why she let her get off here and why she wasn't brought to her actual stop and he just shrugged and drove off. We weren't notified. I was just standing outside waiting for her, and I thought the bus was the French bus at first. We were shocked when our daughter was dropped off by out neighbor.

This is unacceptable. What do we do and who do we speak to. My daughter is 5, in kindergarten.

edit 2: I live in rural shediac, but my children attend schools in Moncton. posting here because the school (and bus) starts in Moncton. figured it was the best sub to post.

Have you noticed how absolutely crazy Value Village’s prices had gotten lately?

it seems like they increase their prices on a monthly basis and it’s just not worth it anymore as the prices have reached Ebay or Facebook marketplace prices.. ITS JUST INSANE SINCE THEY GOT ALL THAT STUFF FOR FREE!!

Here are a few examples:

a kenmore sewing machine valued at around $40 for $69.99 plus tax!

An old 42” 2010 LG Tv for 89.99!? not worth more than $10

not to mention the absolute pricing shenanigans for clothing prices..

For those who didn't know Cineplex Dieppe did some renovations recentlyand open the first Imax theater in New Brunswick.

I thought theaters were dying so that moves surprised me a little bit knowing also that the ticket is getting upcharge because of the IMAX.

Anyway I mostly enjoyed the experience except one detail.

The sound is extremely loud like crazy loud. I'm a bit more sensitive than others probably and got some earing issues spending too much time in concerts when I was younger, so I tend to protect my ears when I can now but I didn't expect a movie could be loud like that.

I was with a friend and he had the same though.

The movie was Gladiator 2 and it was so loud that I was nervous about the next possible actions scene coming up. I had to literally block my ears with my fingers a few time haha.

People around me beside my friend didn't seemed to bother that much so it kinda surprised me.

Lots of studies shows that more and more people have earing loss issues but I might know why lol.

So I might not go seing a movie again in that room (at least not without earing protections)

But again I know I'm a bit more sensitive than others so I'm curious to see some thoughts on this sub.
