If you're posting plans for a first rack for critique/suggestions, consider starting small! It is recommended not to exceed 7U, 168hp (Dimensions of a Popular Intellijel Case), since your needs will likely change as you start using your modular and learning more about what can be done.

Which manufacturers retail prices are way higher than used prices?

I was browsing Reverb and noticed that many Noise Engineering modules go for way less than new. I was wondering which other manufacturers seem to not fare well in the used market as far as price.

Looking for my perfect outboard sequencer and somewhat overwhelmed by options

After running through a lot of variations of sequencer, I've realised the setup I actually want is what I would call "event based". An event is, for example, a run of 16th note triggers to output 1, or a pattern of triggers addressing outputs 1-4. I would have lots of these events defined, and then I could fire them off with buttons - lets say a button press would fire it off once, and a shift-press would loop it. Hopefully I'm explaining that ok. I imagine I trigger event 1 and then perhaps cue up event 5 for the next bar. Edit: so a quantized event sequenecer basically - everything can still be tied to a master clock.

I'm imagining if this exists at all it would done by one of the flagship sequencers like the hapax, the oxi one, the T-1, the deluge, or so on.

in an idea world I could associate CV changes with these events, but I could definitely work around that. And I'm happy to convert midi to triggers.

Any ideas? Thanks very much!

edit: someone rightly pointed out that basically what I want is ableton's session view, in hardware, tied to a master clock!

another edit: Another way to look at it - at its most basic I want to decouple individual tracks/lanes of the sequencer from larger patterns, so I can switch what an individual track is doing at will without affecting everything else.

blip bloops by the 2 2500 and the boog filters pinged by the Barbles gate outs

the main sound is the 2600 (with a pwm saw made with the after later blend)

the 2 sounds on the sides are the system 100 on the left and the kobol on the right

Help with hypnotic techno percussion

Hello,

my rack is almost perfect but i'm really missing some good percussion, i've been trying plaits for a year now and í'm just not clicking with it,

what are some great alternatives, im sequencing it with a metropolis, and the max size is 14HP. i was thinking about the befaco noise plethora but i can't see a V/oct on it

im curious to hear what you guys are using for percussion with hypnotic techno

The key sound im looking is something like tribal drums, those really groovy hypnotic

thanks in advance!

Building a 5U/60HP rhythm rack... roast me! ;-)

Hi everyone! So I found this little cosmetic case a while back and I put custom rails in it, translating it into a 5U/60 HP (1 row of 3U and two rows of Intellijel 1U).

I've come up with a basic idea in ModularGrid with the intention of making it a drum/rhythm rack, but obviously it could pretty much do anything since Rample and Plaits would be the main voices.

The one thing that might bother me is Bartender as a mixer – it's a great mixer (I have one in my current main rack) but it's pretty big as you see. With that said, I like that it allows me to modulate each channel's levels, pan, and has two sends although I could only currently use one with the MultiFX module in the upper right.

Pam would be used mostly for clock sync (or generation if the rack is used by itself), modulation and pitched CV, while Steppy is on gate duties.

A few things I've considered adding are: Plonk, Tymp Legio, and smaller mixers like Rebel Technology Mix 02 (I have one already), or Erica's Black Mixer V3. Obviously I was running out of space, so I couldn't add them. Finally, I have some LPGs in there to fill in the smaller spaces (2hp in the 3U and 6HP in the bottom 1U).

If y'all know of a smaller mixer that has close to the same feature set as Bartender, let me know! I thought of using Ostrawa from XAOC Devices but it's only 4HP smaller than Bartender, so not really a big save on space.

Different mixer ideas that would save space but not sacrifice too much in terms of functionality?

Mother 32 setupmode problem

In the manual and different tutorials it is explained that to access this mode you must press the shift + reset + end + 8 keys. I do it sequentially, in order and simultaneously and nothing works, I cannot access the setup mode. Has it happened to anyone else? How did they solve it?

Doepfer psu3 heat?

https://cdn.modulargrid.net/img/racks/modulargrid_2434072.jpg

I have just this in a case with a doepfer psu3, the psu is getting kinda warm to the point where I can feel it through the modules if I put my hand there,

Should I be concerned? Or is it just cause it’s cold here in the uk,

Power Consumption: 1285 mA +12V | 520 mA -12V | 0 mA 5V

Crackling pots…

I have a Verbos Complex Oscillator that has a couple of crackling pots. I tried turning them over and over but the problem persists. I guess I have to adopt a more drastic approach but I’m afraid to cause damage using contact cleaner (having read somewhere that there’s a risk to attract even more dust in the pots, thus worsening the problem). What’s your approach to this? Any advice specific for Verbos modules? Thanks in advance.

Show me your voiceless rig.

Hi guys,
mostly I've been building groovebox do-it-all type of racks for myself, but I got a Reface CP from my partner as a birthday gift and I'm now toying with the idea of making a looping / effects-type setup.

Do anybody have any examples of racks where they play an instrument into it as the voice?

The dream would be that it semi-randomly gives you some things back to react to, so that it feels like you're having a sort of exploratory jam session with the rack.

I'm considering a setup consisting of Pladask Dradd, Qu-bit Stardust or Nebulae and some sort of basic looper. I might use my Nerdseq to randomly grab notes from midi from the keyboard to layer some bass tones underneath.

Does my new old Moog Prodigy have a mod for modular use?

Yesterday I bought an old Moog Prodigy, and now I see that it has some sort of custom mod on its rear side. Does anyone know this mod, or can say what these are for? A few weeks ago I decided to try out building a modular eurorack system (still only have plaits and maths), and if this Moog mod turns out to be making it possible to integrate the Prodigy into a modular setup, it would be pretty neat…

dream rig

I threw this "dream rig" together in MG and I'm wondering what your thoughts are on it. It's based on my current setup, but I definitely don't plan on building anything this beefy any time soon.

Securing a tall flat case sitting on a desk against a wall with wallpaper?

Would be great to have a case with all the rows vertical against the wall so the hardware synths can go on the desk in front of the case, however, there is wallpaper on the wall so I don't want to drill into the wall to secure the case. How would you secure it? Guitar stand, something else?

Jomox Modbase 09 mk1 vs mk2

Hi friends, I decided buying Modbase 09 mk2 as I loved the kick drum of Alphabase. However before buying I’ve seen there are few mk1 options on the local second hand market for 170€, which is very tempting. I’m wonder what would I be missing if I buy mk1 version instead. What are major upgrades or differences in general between this two ?

Or maybe you could recommend something else?! I want my kick module to sound right straight out of the module, I have very small system and will be processing it in the P3 standalone.

mid sides with Worng on master - nice single channel saturator for sides? nice single channel compressor for mids?

i was watching a youtube vid the other day going thru Worng’s midside+ module and it made the nice suggestion of running the side channel thru some subtle saturation and the mid channel thru some nice compression.

and so i’ve been wondering if anyone had some tips on some nice modules to complement the midside+?

low HP, both could be single channel. a saturator for the sides and a compressor that’s nice enough for mastering the mid channel (maybe with a selectable high pass on the detector to prevent excessive pumping with the bass?).

i think they should probably be analogue to make sure there is no delay in the processing.

any tips appreciated:)

thanks

Oscilloscope recommendations?

I'm looking for a decent-quality used oscilloscope. Any ideas? Something for under £150 used, under £100 would be great

There are modern digital models (Siglent, Rigol etc) on the higher end, and there's a lot of older digital ones on eBay, as well as analog CRT ones. It's hard to know what's a good deal. Maybe one from the 90s? Ex-school inventory?

I'd prefer to keep the scope out of the rack because I need the HP, don't really need to look at waveforms during jams, and want to use the scope for other purposes too.

The cheap digital scopes look ok but they aren't accurate for other uses.

Have to give a shout out for Noise Engineering’s support

I picked up a Versio module from eBay. Upon trying to swap the firmware ran into an issue with connecting. Contacted support via their website, had an initial response within around 10 minutes, went back and forth a few times and had the module working within an hour. Thankfully an easy fix, there was a clashing driver on my PC, once uninstalled it worked immediately.

Super knowledgable, helpful and friendly despite the fact that the module was 2nd hand. Thank you!

Performance oriented trigger mangling ideas

Hi guys, I sometimes do fast paced music and would like to have some ideas on how to generate interesting kick/drum patterns/breaks live.

A few patches I use:

  • a slow sequencer (a step is a bar), triggers pattern changes of another sequencer. (Step8->metron).
  • A 2hp slice just after my kick module
  • Clank chaos: prob = 100%, speed = 1. Looped settings: speed = 2x or 4x, prob=80%. Alternating between looping / non looping gives some interesting breaks.
  • Simple 4 by 4, followed by a clock multiplier/divider with a pot and playing that pot.

I am planning to get a cv recorder so that I can replay interesting breaks I played live.

I am interested by some very hands on ideas. Also if you have ideas for more natural rhythms (like how to integrate a burst module), and how to integrate accents when not using a drum sequencers. Please explain :)

Need suggestions / help for troubleshooting my gainstaging as a Eurorack newcomer

Heya!

After being humbled by my knowledge in a post about a Noisy Mimeophone, I've concluded the issue is the gain staging in my current setup.

I made a very small rack (https://modulargrid.net/e/racks/view/2004010) with a 3 sided purpose. Sound sourced from Morphagene, CV utility to VCV / Hardware from the ES-9, and the Mimeophone as a delay for either of these.

What i seem to lack is a proper way to gainstage from line level --> eurorack --> back to line level. With the added problem of maybe sending it through a Death By Audio Rooms (which is VERY prone to clipping).

Good thing i left 12HP open for troubleshooting. :)

My thought process with all the tips i got from my previous post is that a Quad VCA would solve my issue in the signal flow. Solar 42 --> VCA (+db) --> Mimeophone --> VCA (-db) --> DBA Rooms --> Focusrite.

Before making any more mistakes, is this a logical solution?

Bonus question - Any recommendations for a 8HP quad VCA so i can also fit in och'd for some easy LFO access for mimeo / morpha? ;)
