Blur-Goodbye Albert

This song makes really good use of the minor 4. Really tugs at the heart strings

unpopular opinion

major IV in a minor key > minor iv in a major key (disclaimer: i think both sound very nice)

mostly made this post to say that major IV in a minor key is criminally underrated, there’s just something so warm and comforting about it. peak modal mixture imo :)

So how to sound smart

Instead of sounding a normie by saying "Ah yeah minor 4 to 1"

I say " ah Yeah the mixolydian b13 sound "

Do I sound smarter?

Or cringe? 🧐

Edit: it's sarcasm lol

Minor iv chords in Christmas music

Has anyone else noticed that there are a lot of Christmas songs that use the minor iv chord? (Probably because they’re aiming for a nostalgic sound). Some I have found are:

  • White Christmas
  • The Christmas Song
  • Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas
  • Christmas Time Is Here
  • Jingle Bell Rock
  • It’s The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year
  • Wonderful Christmastime
  • I’ll Be Home For Christmas
  • All I Want For Christmas Is You
  • Santa Claus Is Coming To Town

I also have a playlist if anyone is interested. Has anyone else noticed the same phenomenon, or have any other examples?

Clair de Lune has one of the most beautiful uses of the Minor4 - Gb (IV) to Gbm(iv) to Fm (iii, substituted for the Db tonic)!! (Debussy - Minor4 sequence starts at 3m2s)

Vince Guaraldi adds some emotion to the Great Pumpkin Waltz's bridge with a minor4 - G to Cm (@1m29s).

Favorite subsitutions and extensions of iv?

Hi! I've been making a list of my favorite subsitutions of iv, and I was wondering what some of yours were! Also, it seems like the b6 really drives the iv sound. (apologies for my sloppy notation).

  • iv 6, spicier
  • iv 7, takes away nostalgia but keeps finality
  • iv maj7, more tragic?
  • iv 6 / 5, more suspended feel
  • bVI 5+ maj7 -> iv6, ending of star wars title theme, mmmmm soo spicy
  • bVII 9 (aka iv 6 / b7), takes the bite off and makes it jazzier

EDIT: I wanted to break down these chords into the operations I did to get them:

Base of iv:

  • Add 6, m7, or maj7
  • Turn into slash chord, 5 or b7 in terms of non-chord tones

Base of bVI:

  • Replace 5 with 5+
  • Add maj7

Both:

  • Replace tonic with leading tone (u/KingAdamXVII's suggestion)

Debussy was lured by the power of the iv in "La soirée dans Grenade". He begins a triumphant Habanera theme in A (meas 38, 1m32s) which resolves with the minor plagal sequence D - Dm - A (1m52s).

Definitely not cause it’s the most distinct sounding chord in the progression (other than maybe the I chord)

Has anyone else developed an uncanny ability to detect random minor iv chords everywhere?

Ever since I started learning about minor iv chords, I’ve become increasingly able to recognize them. It’s come to the point where I’ll just stumble on them randomly-when I hear songs in public (even if I’ve never heard them before), while playing video games with soundtracks in the background, etc. Today I was watching a movie with my parents and I pointed out a random minor iv chord in the soundtrack that only was played a couple times. I bet they think I’m crazy now, lol. Does this happen to anyone else or is it just me?

Is this a minor iv chord or am I tripping? It sounds like an Fm here to me but all the tabs say F major.
