How common is it to work 12 hour days in office-based residential roles?

By office-based I mean site-based office roles, as opposed to head offices in Perth / Brisbane.

I've been in my current role (residential) for about a year, where prior to this I'd done 3 years of FIFO work in similar roles. I'm in the site's projects team, usually working something along the lines of 6am - 3pm unless something goes wrong onsite.

As much as I enjoy the work I'm doing and being able to sleep in my own bed each night, I can't really see myself lasting where I am for another 6-12 months, as the town's too small and I'm sick of having to drive 1-2 hours every time I want to go to Bunnings, BCF, Kmart, or practically any other shop you don't get in towns with less than 10k people.

I'm going through a bit of a phase where I'm tossing up whether I want my next role to be FIFO or residential. If it's residential, I'd like something with similar hours to what I have now, just in a small-mid sized city that has everything you need. If it's FIFO though, I don't really care, as long as it ends up somewhat close to an even time roster.

Realistically though, how common are 8-10 hour shifts for those in office based roles? If I'm most likely going to be doing 12 hours each day, I'd rather just throw the extra 3 days on the end and have 6 off, never having to take leave again...

Any tips/tricks for someone new to FIFO?

Just landed a gig at Mt Isa doing 2:1. Never done FIFO before, so not sure what to expect.

Do I need to pack anything in particular? Is everyday items available up there, like Panadol/medical supplies and toiletries?

I honestly have no clue. 😅😅

Asbestos in the mines?

Hi all

Just watched a video on Instagram of a girl who works laundry in the mines on a night shift. Its a 'day in the life' type video. She is literally saying in the video that she does all the laundry because there's asbestos on the workers clothes. "My job is to do the laundry because their clothes are covered in asbestos". Now whilst saying this she can be seen in the video with no mask or protective suit. She literally has a high vis shirt on a pair of gloves for some of the video. Considering the sheer danger associated with asbestos, I am wondering what the ? Is this really happening in the mines? Can someone shed light on this?

P.s. if you wanna see the video it's on 'fifoguide' insta https://www.instagram.com/reel/C6eEdwCIJw1/?igsh=eDY0aHZvNGo4cjZ5

Dump truck traineeship

Had a telephone interview re: a dump truck traineeship I applied for. One of the questions was what I thought a typical shift would be like/ what to expect from a typical working day … the call ended with me being advised to find out more (I pretty much recited what I’d read on the job description). Can anyone offer anything? IF I progress to another interview, I could be asked again.

(Aus) Mining engineering manuals, handbooks, etc. recommendations

Hello r/mining, I wanted to ask you folks for some recommendations on mining engineering references, specifically for the Australian mining industry. I had just arrived in the country and figured that while looking for a job (I know- really really bad timing lol) I should make good use of my time by reading up on references. I'm currently studying blasting handbooks from Dyno and Orica. I do have a copy of the SME handbook but if there were some alternate mining engineering bible for Australia that I did not know about please do tell me about it. Cheers!

Should I resign from boring permanent role to start super interesting contract role?

Hi there!

I'm working for a global Iron Ore Miner in Perth and feel stuck in a job role that has no procedures, organisation, structures or clear definition of job responsibilities in place and also does not come with career progression within my current team- however, lots of opportunities outside my team within the organisation (that I have been applying for for the past few months, however, without luck so far).

I started in March last year and although the role didn't really spark that much interest during the interview, I took it on as it offered a great opportunity to get my feet into the door of a global mining company and even as permanent employee. Although I dislike (and often even hate my role due to the almost daily frustrations that come with it), I usually start early so get to knock off at 3:30ish, my salary and my team is alrightish, I can WFH 2 days a week, get share matching after 3 years and an annual performance bonus of ~10%. It certainly is not terrible, but most of the time my work days are average/below average. I try my hardest to see if from a rational perspective: They get my time, I get their money but sometimes it's so frustrating that it's hard to turn off emotions.

I now have an offer on the table from an external company that would not only be in my prefered job field and super interesting to me, but even a step up into a specialist role where I could finally deepen my knowledge and sharpen my skills in a field that I'm actually passionate about. I had the interview with the person I would report to and it clicked immediately- seemed like an absolutely non toxic work environment to me. The only catch: It would start as a contract role for 12 months (however, very likely to turn into permanent role , but still without 100% guatantee). I was told what my package as permanent employee would look like if I became permanent and obviosuly higher than my current job, simply due to being a specialist role. At this company I could WFH 2-3 days a week and -if I turn into permanent- would also accrue an additional RDO every 4 weeks, so Work Life Balance would be great, 6 weeks of paid holiday a year instead of 4.

Additionally, I also have a trip to South America booked in for Oct. One option would be to stick the current job out until then, resign, finally go on a long dreamed of 2-3 month trip to South America (Only booked one way so flexible with lenght) and simply hope I'd find a new better job upon my return (either within current company or external).

If I'd move to new company, I could still go as I got their ok, however, "only" for 1 month- first world problem, I know.

Do you have any tips for me? I've been stuck between a hard place and a rock for 2 weeks now and just can't get to a decision. :( What would you do? Stay with my current company, have a bit more patience and keep applying for other internal job roles hoping that it's just a matter of time OR take the risk and opt for the contract role in my dream field hoping that it will eventually turn into a permanent role?

Cheers,

Someone that needs to make a big decision tomorrow 😬

Could I land a job in mining? (aus)

So I'm currently doing an apprenticeship as an heavy diesel mechanic on agricultural machinery (tractors etc). I'm getting a cert 3 in agricultural mechanical technology which is different to the mobile plant cert most jobs ask for.

Would I have to unskill to that or could I land a job with the agricultural cert? Should I consider trying to move into a mobile plant apprenticeship? I'm enjoying what I'm doing now but after apprenticeship the pay isn't comparable to what diesel techs get in mining or even in residential working on construction machinery so I would like to see myself move into those industries.

Would appreciate any advice at all. Thanks!

Blast crew

Hey guys, I’m planning on moving across the ditch to aus from nz just been having the typical scope through different fifo jobs with no experience just wondering if blast crew was a reasonable line of work to get into. Been working as a aluminium fabricator for the past 7 years stuck in a workshop so looking for something outdoors like. If all else fails the ol drillers offside might just be the play.

TLDR - blast crew work any good ? Good pay? Experience and tickets needed?

XRF vs VNIR for nickel laterite

hey guys,

i'm working in a nickel mining pit, primarily on lateritic nickel ore deposit. as usual, we have a sample check so that the next shift have high confidence in mining the area. usually, these samples are delivered to our lab and will be processed by XRF analyzer. however this process takes quite a time because we need to grind/crush it so it become homogenous. i'm thinking of replacing this sampling processes to save cost and time. currently there are 2 ideas:

  1. use handheld XRF analyzer. but the problem is, we still need to crush the samples. currently im looking for tools to achieve this in the mining pit(no electricity)

  2. use VNIR + SWIR spectrometer. however ASD one is very expensive and havent found a good one from alibaba

any thoughts?

Mining Engineer

Hey guys, I'm a female mining engineer based in the Philippines. My expertise lies in mine planning and design for quarries, utilizing software like Surpac, Global Mapper, etc. I'm keen on gaining experience in Australia but unsure of my chances. Can anyone provide insights into the current state of the industry there? What specific skills are in high demand at the moment?

Thanks heaps.

Perth Hotels / Accom with a shuttle in the morning

Folks, just wondering if you've got any tips for a nights accommodation in Perth - something cheap with a free shuttle in the morning before the 6am flights?

I've previously stayed at the Ingot, Sanno Marracoonda and Flag Motor Lodge, but I'm just wondering if there's any other options I should consider?

Retaliation or legitimate?

So I work for a core drilling company who has a 14 on 7 off schedule. I was approved to work a double hitch (5 weeks) because my cross shift needed a week off for training. 2 days ago I tweaked my back at work which happens frequently, but it's usually never serious. It was a minor tweak and just ached a little for the remainder of the shift so I thought nothing of it. When I woke up the next morning my back was in spasms and I was in excruciating pain. Even though I hate calling in sick I did anyway. I'm still in a good deal of pain but I came to work the next day (today) and when I got in the truck I was told my OT approval was rescinded. My driller told me "you missed a scheduled day of work, why would they reward you with more work?". He also said something to the effect of "if you're fatigued the chance of you getting hurt is higher". I interpret this as "we are punishing you for missing work but we have to come up with some sort of legitimate reason".

Thoughts?

FIFO 2/2

Hi guys, I'm doing some looking around for any Australian mines that do FIFO 2/2 and I'm having limited luck. I'm wondering if anyone can recommend any?

I'm already in the industry just keeping my options open.

Cheers

Struggling to get into tge industry (AUS)

Hey guys, I've been kinda having a hard time getting my foot in the door here in Australia. Im 23 on a working holiday visa.

I have:

  • white Induction ticket
  • working in heights, confined spaces and gas test
  • aus drivers license
  • police check (though I think i got the wrong one, i got the one from the federal police oops)

I've made expression of interest to around 40 different labour hire companies throughout all of Australia and applied for more than 10 jobs a day with my new acquired tickets.

Any good advice moving forward?

Cost estimation on a headframe and winding gear

Anyone have any ideas on the rough cost for a headframe and winding gear? I am using the Ausimm handbook, but it doesn't really have anything. I am thinking to replace a headframe and winder should be around 25m USD - including removing the old one and making right. Lead times are also terrible, so planning on 12 months.

Thoughts?
