I noticed that in the traditional Mycology sub, the lack of specific information pertinent to the growing of medicinal mushrooms, as well as a lack of specific information regarding each species. I felt that a community dedicated to medicinal mushrooms would better help separate the ID requests from those seeking knowledge.

Hi I am looking for information on veterinary use of Lions Mane mushroom - am curious if there is an even more specialized sub than this one or those questions are ok here?
im aware some is good mycelium but what is the brownish grey in the middle
Hello all,
Taking Oriveda PSP-50 Turkey Tail. Each serving (3 capsules) is equal to 1 gram.
I imagine that 1 gram is enough for general maintenance, but my immune system dysfunction (due to CLL) causes extreme responses and illness to average viruses. I am not currently in treatment (active surveillance).
So my question is: how much of a dose should I take as someone who is immunocompromised to strengthen my immune response?
Thank you.
Can anyone identify these? My dog is currently sick with some sort of fungal infection and I'm trying identify which so I can ask my vet for the right meds (my vet admittedly isn't very knowledgeable about these kinds of infections and the specialist is SO expensive!!) Please help!
Let's say I want to grow my own mushrooms including blue oysters, turkey tail, lions mane, shiitake, enoki etc. on rotation, and I would like to incorporate it into my family's diet. What cooking methods will maximize the health benefits?
These are guidelines that I've read in reddit comments. Please confirm or deny them if you know:
-Desireable compounds (polysaccharides) are generally much more bio available and concentrated in extractions than they are in raw or cooked mushrooms. The fact that your gut bacteria breaks down chitin isn't relevant....? -most mushrooms have water-soluble and alcohol-soluble compounds and it's best to use dual extraction to get both -Beta glucans in lions mane are best extracted from chitin via a pressure cooker (and then what? Drink the broth?) -Pan frying in oil will eliminate most of the health benefits -Dehydrating -> blending -> steeping in hot tea, coffee, or soup is a good alternative to doing a full on extraction, but you will miss out of alcohol-soluble compounds? -freezing a raw mushroom isn't recommended for texture... but does it break down the chitin and make it more bioavailable?
I'm trying to find someone who understands the medicinal side of psilocybe cubs and their potential relationship to reducing tinnitus. I have SEVERE tinnitus and struggle finding any relief. That being said I have found that 2gr of albino psilocybe will completely take away my condition for up to 6hrs. I've done a lot of testing and trials and albinos are the only strains that work. Regular non-albino strains do not seem to have any effect on it even at much higher doses. I was hoping someone might know and be able to help me understand or that someone else has found this to help them as well and maybe we could compare notes and ides. I would love to find a permanent solution to this problem. Thank you
Need help making sense of medicinal mushroom dosage discrepancies, such as that of turkey tail, lions mane etc. Gold standard for real benefits seems to be min. 1g+/day for most mushrooms. I can only find potent doses as loose powder. All capsules/gummies are only like 100-200mg??? I’ve also seen some advertised as “1g per capsule” when it really contained only 200mg/capsule of 5 different mushroom extracts, so 1g total instead of for each type of mush. I should add I am ideally looking for a multiblend. I’d previously purchased Brilliant Superfood’s “mushroom extract premium organic powder blend” containing 1g/.5tsp of loose powder. Would love to find a reputable, potent multiblend capsule. TYIA
I am trying to find some clarity to this, I noticed most Lions Mnae 1:1 extracts have higher test results for beta-glucans than more expensive concentrated extracts i.e 8:1, I have been told that this is due to insoluble beta-glucan that is not filtered out, I am wondering do these have the same beneficial effects for us as soluble Beta-glucans ? and if so why are people paying more for these concentrated extracts?
Ik it sounds weird, but I have a grow bag full of reishi and ready for harvest. I want to make an extract but I don't have any alcohol besides some chinese cooking wine. I'm not 21 yet and I don't have the money for regular alcohol anyways. Can I use the chinese cooking wine or should I just dry them and make them into a powder?
I bought some stuff but it's all extracts, was wondering if it's known to be less effective than powder?
Someone in my family got diagnosed with a pancreatic tumor and a spleen tumor. They spawned in the las 6 months since that was the last time they got a checkup. What supplements would you recommend? I have done some light research and turkey tail, reishi, shiitake and maitake seem to come up with some consistency. We don't intend to forego any modern medical tratments, but we have considered some mycological aid. We'll be glad to hear your experiences. Thank you.
Hi, so I’ve been scratching my head over where to even ask about my mushroom farming but I think there will be somebody here with experience. I bought a golden teacher kit and the first spawn or batch or what ever it’s called was fairly ok. I made a mistake of letting the spores drop. After that I’ve had about three more batches where I’ve drenched the kit for 12 hours after harvesting. After the first harvest though I’ve been having pretty poor yields, I get about 3-4 mushrooms at best. Usually from the sides never on top like the first harvest. So I want to bring this puppy back to its former glory to get better harvests. What can I do to save this? Buy another kit and combine the two? Buy coconut stuff to mix with it and do the boiling water thing? Sorry if my terminology is bad at best, I’m new to all this and live in Sweden. Let me know what I can do to improve my little kit. I’m looking to expand it in the future but for now I’m just doing it for fun and to have some mushrooms for my mental health. Thanks in advance ❤️🙏
Looking for a good book or resources that talk about which herbs/botanicals and plants pair well with medicinal mushrooms. Basically about using medicinal herbs effectively with medicinal mushrooms.
For example I know that some blend ginko with lions mane to support nervous system health.
I just took 1 capsule of Turkey tail from Gaia brand(I saw there are better brands it seems) a couple hours ago and holy smokes about an hour in I got so amped I felt uncomfortable. Like whole pot of coffee and some cocaine vision getting weird amplified.
What are the mechanisms that might cause this response in someone?
Additional information- I have a chronic mysterious health condition called dysautonomia(mystery is that the root cause is still unknown) and I tend towards physical fatigue and even when I have energy it’s unstable and doesn’t last long. The feeling is like it’s stimulated my thyroid and reminds me of when I tried iodine, just super amped. I’ll update how the evening goes.
Hi guys
I'm in need of a serious immune boost at the moment, I've had a lingering cold/flu coupled with migraines and gum infections (2 rounds of anti biotics) since just before Christmas. I think it's time to try Turkey Tail alongside improving my diet etc, my friend started using it recently and has had great results. He forages his and processes it himself, something I would like to do in the future, but I'm so run down right now I just need something ready to go that I can buy off the shelf until I have the energy and vitality to get out into the woods.
I see mainly gel caps and tincture, all at various prices and probably qualities, I imagine like CBD products alot of them will be more or less snake oil with minimal active ingredients in them or vastly overpriced, so I'm keen for some recommendations on what to buy and from where (UK based suggestions please). Also any links to good information about dosages, efficacy etc would be really handy, I've had a bit of a look but a lot of stuff I find is a bit wishy washy and I'm more a man of science.
TIA
Hi all, I am trying to do some supportive therapy for my dog Oscar. I want to give him some mushroom powder (freshcap) and have read a lot about tumor cell interference from mushrooms like turkey tail and cordyceps. Does anyone have a recommendation? He’s my best friend and I want to do whatever I can, osteosarcoma of skull bone, so it is not looking good. I attached a photo of him! He’s 7. And a very GB
Hi there
I've foraged Birch Polypore and Turkey Tail, now want to make some tinctures. Read 'hot water under pressure' is best method.. does does this mean pressure cooker?
Then what do you do? Simplest thing to me seems to then mix with pure ethanol 3:1 to make a tincture that would last
I collected some turkey tails and I wonder if I have to dry them first before I use them. And also if I just need to make a tea out of them or how to consume them.
There's so many mushrooms that are good for you, I kinda wanna take them all. There are lots of mixes on the market - are these a good idea, or better to focus on one mushroom to really get it's benefit, or maybe take individual mushrooms to get a good dosage but rotate through the week (trying to avoid spending all my money on supplements)???
Seems there's different views on whether to have whole mushroom powder or an extract. Saw a talk with a herbalist who was saying generally whole mushroom powder best as get full spectrum but some online sources saying need to get rid of chitins to facilitate absorbtion. Is it a matter of taking powders for general wellbeing, then extracts for something specific (e.g. turkey tail for cancer, chaga for inflammation)?
And if making extractions at home, how do you make a hot water extraction that keeps?
Hi all. My dad just found out his prostate cancer has spread. Still waiting to hear how Drs plan to treat but figure he should be taking Turkey Tail regardless. Does anyone have any idea about dosage? Seems 3g/day of PSK but that's an extract, so presumably a lot more of whole mushroom. Also, what is the best way to take it? I'm making him a tincture but I heard whole mushroom/powder maybe better.
I appreciate this isn't proper medical advice on this forum, I just want to get him taking something quickly. He's quite reluctant about anything that isn't hardcore chemicals so getting him to a herbalist is out the question
I recently found my first birch polypore ( she was a monster) and cut it into slices to dry. They've been out since Sunday night and are definitely drying but are still pretty bendy. It kind of feels like they might never not be bendy though? Will they ever get cracker dry? Is it worth me trying to dehydrate them in an oven at this point?
I'm planning on making a tincture, so ideally I need to be able to grind them up to a powder first. Would my nutribullet do the trick?
Thankyou in advance 🙏
What exactly is a “safe amount” of heavy metals. There are trace amounts in almost all brands I have had access to the test results - but what isn’t safe? Sorry if this is a dumb question but I don’t know how to read these results.
