A place to discuss the multifaceted, iconoclastic, genre-defying progressive metal band, Mastodon.
Mastodon is an American metal band from Atlanta, Georgia, formed in early 2000 and composed of bassist/vocalist Troy Sanders, guitarist/vocalist Brent Hinds, guitarist Bill Kelliher and drummer/vocalist Brann Dailor. Many of their songs feature heavy and unique instrumentation with a mix of clean vocals and harsh screams.

Do you think they'll play the entire Leviathan album? Any guesses?
Are there any posters on the go at the Sydney show tonight? Hoping to pick one up at the Melbourne show.
My mate can't come so please someone make use of it. https://www.moshtix.com.au/v2/event/mastodon-sideshow-with-special-guest-kerry-king/173058?rac=4575e72d-52ee-41c4-b435-d8fb2b0ce61f

Currently using some EB not even slinky sets (12-56) and the A turns into a spaghetti noodle. Is this pretty common with that tuning?
Old news at this point but just want to say that I am not a fan of this remaster. In my opinion CtS is one of the most beautiful sounding metal records of all time. It sounds raw, muddy, visceral, and yet has so much depth and detail. Brendan o'Brien absolutely nailed it.
The remaster is, as most remasters are, just a little bit louder and brighter. I get that thye want to do a special edition but this really adds very little to an already perfect record. It's not like it's a Beatles album that sounds completely different to modern recordings.
The mids heavy, raw sound of that record was a deliberate artistic choice, and to brighten it up and limit it a bit adds nothing, and in fact takes away a little bit of the intent from one of the greatest metal records of all time.

I discovered this band a bit over 2 months ago (after seeing Leviathan reccomended by a few different sources and the release of Floods of Triton). About 5 days ago, I finished listening to their discography (with H&G, though I didn't exactly go in chronological order) and I feel pretty comfortable saying this is my favorite band now!
Forgive the ramble-y post but I wanna give some brief thoughts about each album :P
Remission: I love how heavy this album is! It's not quite as creative as their later albums but as a first record it's incredible. This is my 4th favorite.
[Fave Tracks: Crusher Destroyer, March of the Fire Ants]
Leviathan: My first Mastodon album and my favorite as well! Words cannot describe how much I LOVE this album. Everything about it is fantastic, the whole thing rips from start to finish. I already got it on vinyl and it's honestly a top 3 (maybe #1?) metal album for me along with Master of Puppets and Rust in Peace.
[Fave Tracks: literally all of them]
Blood Mountain: I appreciate how experimental this album is while remaining heavy. Some of my favorite moments on this one are either the experimental parts (EX: "Eyes all around you..." on Cysquatch/whatever TF is happening on Bladecatcher) or the really heavy parts (EX: "THE HERO OF THE GODS..." on Wolf is Loose). The second half of the album sort of bleeds together for me, though, for some reason. Still a great album. 5th favorite!
[Fave Tracks: The Wolf is Loose, Crystal Skull, Circle of Cysquatch]
Crack the Skye: My 2nd favorite! I also got this one on vinyl. I don't have much to say that hasn't already been said about this one tbh, it's just brilliant front to back as well!
[Fave Tracks: Divinations, The Czar, The Last Baron]
The Hunter: The Hunter through Emperor of Sand era seems to get quite a bit of grief, and while I do like these albums a teeny bit less than their others, I still think they're great! I was pleasantly surprised by this album since it seems to be the general least favorite (and I really don't like the standard cover art, hence why I listen to the deluxe lol). This album flows super nicely and it's my favorite out of the 2011-2017 era. My 6th favorite overall!
[Fave Tracks: Black Tongue, Blasteroid, Dry Bone Valley]
Once More 'Round The Sun: I like OMRtS a lot and appreciate how unique it is within Mastodon's discography. This album is fun to put on occasionally and I like the sound of it, but I am also happy they only leaned this hard into this sound for the one album (even if EoS and Hunter are fairly similar). It's my least favorite album by the band (not counting Call of the Mastodon) but it's still a very good album!
[Fave Tracks: Tread Lightly, The Motherload, Once More 'Round the Sun]
Emperor of Sand: I feel very similarly about this album to the previous two. I like it a lot, it's good from start to finish (as per usual with this band), but it isn't as consistently great as their earlier works to me. But it's still a great album! I will say it has one of my favorite album covers by the band.
[Fave Tracks: Ancient Kingdom, Scorpion Breath, Jaguar God]
Hushed and Grim: This album is SUCH a hidden gem and a huge return to form!!!! Everyone knows the band's first four albums are great, but this album seems to go under the radar which is a crime. I haven't even known this album for a week, but it's quickly shot up to be one of my favorite Mastodon albums. I was initially hesitant because of the length, but this album DELIVERS from front to back. Every song has its own identity and the band are operating at their absolute best all over this album. Hushed and Grim deserves the same reputation as Leviathan and Crack the Skye in my opinion!! This is such a brilliant body of work and it makes me SO excited for whatever the band does next <3
[Fave Tracks: The Beast, Had It All, Savage Lands]
TLDR:
So there's my thoughts on each album by this band I'm currently obsessed with! I have some questions as well if anyone wants to answer:
I never realized the brilliance of choosing neil fallon to do the vocals on blood and thunder until I heard spacegrass. Holy shit that song rips and its a no brainer they asked him to do the best part of blood and thunder.
I love this record but the only song I never come back to and generally dislike is Quintessence. I guess I don't really know if this is a popular opinion or not but I just find this song to be too weird and annoying for my taste. Every other song however, is god tier.
Anyways, what's your least favorite track?
How good is this song? It's awesome - super hypnotic and melodic. It's a hidden gem in their catalog. Thoughts?
If I was a corn plant in a corn field during harvest time, I feel like the intro banjo/guitar hybrid picked riff in Divinations that Brent plays, would be the sound of the combine getting closer and closer
What does everyone expect Mastodons setlist to resemble when they show up?
They're backing up a massive Leviathan tour, but they haven't toured here in a long time. Are we going to see a form of greatest hits or will it be Leviathan continued?
What's everyones thoughts and hopes?
Does anyone know who is opening for their show at the casino in Hammond? Looking around and can't seem to find any info about openers. Thanks!
I really like icebergs, and I couldn´t find any about our boys, so I decided to make one. I hope you enjoy.
Please note that I´m a newbie to making icebergs and Mastodon. Also if you´d like to share some interesting facts in the comments, I might make another, bigger version of of it.
