What's it like living here Asian young professional

I am an Asian Female young professional in mid-20s. I will likely be offered a job in the hospital. My partner may or may not join me depending on his work arrangement. I was just wondering what is it like here? Mainly I would like to know about transport and renting

1. Transport

I don’t drive, therefore need to rely on public transport and taxi. I heard that there is never Uber available. How reliable are the taxis?

Can they come on-time if you book them to come immediately or pre-book them?

I have night shifts. Is it practical to order a taxi every night I finish my shift?

2. Renting

What is the renting market like? I plan to join a flat with existing working professionals. I had experience renting with landlords in mid-50s and she was super nice. So, I am also considering the living with landlord option.

Is it hard to find accommodation like this? What sort of price range am I expecting for a couple like us?

In terms of areas, what areas are considered safer areas that are not too far from the hospital?

It will be greatly appreciated if you can comment honestly about what's it like living here. Thank you!

Advice for buying in Masterton

My small family and I are making the move to Masterton after a job opportunity. We're very attracted to the cost of housing there, but really hard to know what areas are trash and what areas are family friendly.

I've seen a deprivation map online for Masterton, but it's from 2001.

Advice on areas and streets to definitely stay away from?

Areas that are well priced but still decent and safe?

We've got interest in a few houses on Gordon Road, and Robert's Road, any opinions?

Also any particularly bad schools to avoid for my 5 year old, and any great ones?

And any advice in general welcomed.

Featherston level crossing closures

Apologies in advance if this is not the right group, I can't find any others.

Kiwirail wants to close two crossings in Featherston but actually they want to close three. In brief here is what they want to do:

  • Close Brandon St crossing with no consultation. They say it will be easy for people to use SH53 crossing (it actually won't because they have to use SH2 to get onto SH53). They also say there are safety issues at Brandon St when there aren't.
  • Close either Bell St or Fox St. Kiwirail claim there are similar risk profiles at both these crossings despite their independent reports showing that Fox St crossing has significant safety issues (Bell St doesn't).
  • Close SH53 crossing. This has implications for Brandon St crossing. NZTA won't permit SH53 crossing to be closed just now because it would have to move the junction with SH2 east of then railway. So Kiwirail so far has been unable to get support to close the SH53 crossing.

As you can see I think there is a clear case to close the Fox St crossing ahead of the Bell St crossing on safety grounds yet Kiwirail claims there is no reason for preferring one option over the other. Kiwirail also claims Brandon St crossing needs to be closed on safety grounds when there are no safety issues identified in the independent Aurecon review they had done. There will be safety problems for people going from that end of Featherston who are forced to divert via SH2/SH53.

Masterton NZ

To the ‘charming’ woman walking ‘being dragged by’ her Staffordshire Bull Terrier this evening down Essex Street in Masterton at around 5pm. If you’re going to rudely bite someone’s head off because their extremely well trained, teeny tiny dog wanted to say hello to yours, please realise that YOU are the problem. Not me or my dog and certainly not yours. It’s lazy, idiots like yourself who buy these dogs with ZERO intention to TRAIN THEM! If your dog cannot be let off it’s lead or even be faced with another dog, a friendly one at that, due to its savage temperament, get off your lazy tattooed ass and train it or give it to a responsible adult, willing to put in the time and effort to do so. Your poor dog is destined to be destroyed. BE BETTER!

CCTV cameras

Kia Ora whanau

Just been for a walk around Sir Brian Lachore St and the place seemed pretty covered in CCTV cameras looking over the streets, in a way that most suburban streets aren’t. If they were on houses I wouldn’t mind too much, but these are on street poles.

Does anybody know if they’re Council cameras? If so part of me wonders why these streets warrant them
