I've worked with children for over 10 years and have been able to introduce them to all kinds of fantasy and sci-fi. It's a great feeling sharing your experiences and love of stories and characters to then see a child's eyes light up with the same wonder and joy you had the first time you discovered something like Star Wars or Lord of the Rings.
I recently introduced some K and Pre-K children I work with to the old 1980's Masters of the Universe cartoons. I thought it would be good because those were the first and those old cartoons were very child friendly. There may have been monsters and fighting but no one died, you never see visible injury and it's overall very campy but sincere.
One of my kids we'll call Jake loves the hulk and superheroes. So when I showed him a short clip of the original he-man transformation he was quiet. Then he said he wanted to see it again. Then later I offered to show full episodes when we had the time and are able to. Jake watched he-man and seemed to like it. Not more than 2 weeks later his dad told me he went on about how he loved He-Man. Jake's dad bought him a He-man toy and Jake loves holding up a stick or pool noodle and shouting (as best he can) "By the power of Greyskull".
The other thing I loved about Masters of the Universe was boys and girls could love it interchangeably. I have no shame in admitting I loved watching the old She-Ra cartoons. Going further, I also showed some of the girls a clip of She-Ra's transformation. One of the little girls really liked it. We'll call her Molly. Molly liked watching the version were Swift Wind is also changed in to a winged unicorn. When I could I also showed episodes of She-Ra. Molly loves them and when she even hears a little of the old She-Ra theme she shouts "She-Ra!". I also explained how She-Ra and He-Man are siblings. Jake and Molly sometimes talk to each other about She-Ra and He-Man. Funnily enough they never argue over who is better because they like both but simply have a preference between the two.
Honestly, this has just made me feel really good and I was happy that I could share something that had meant so much to me as a kid and even now with a younger generation. I'm planning on showing them more when I can. I was thinking of the original Thundercats next.
Does anyone know which Skeletor is this? Where is it from?
I drew Spikor.
Hey all, I'm wondering if anyone can identify the original sources of the art being used for a couple of shirts that Toy Snobs currently has available for preorder. For anyone unaware, this is a website that will often print vintage MOTU art on T-shirts.
One of the designs currently available has He-Man in front of a Roton that Skeletor is piloting. I can't find the source of the original vintage art, but I don't believe it's a Roton box. May be a poster but I haven't had any luck.
The other one I'm curious about is one of the youth shirts: He-Man knocking the sword out of Skeletor's hand with Teela and Castle Grayskull in the background. This one looks like comic art but I'm not positive.
For those of us who have been waiting for Mattel Creations to send out the Duplico figures from their site in December, they're starting to ship.
