Without government, who would artificially restrict housing and screw up the market for a century?

The state makes stupid decisions regard the amount, type, and location of housing units instead of letting the market decide. What could possibly go wrong?

"A little more than a century ago, Massachusetts voters approved a constitutional amendment that gave the Legislature a far-reaching new power in the seemingly humdrum question of where to build houses and what type to build. The 1918 amendment gave legislators the authority to “limit buildings according to their use or construction to specified districts of cities and towns.”

...

A hundred years later, Massachusetts is in the midst of a housing shortage that has been decades in the making — and indeed arguably has its roots in misguided decisions a century ago. Rather than keep the planning and zoning powers at the state level, in 1920 the Legislature delegated them to cities and towns — which promptly started using their new authority to pass rules that suppressed housing growth and kept out poor people and renters."

RMV drops case after trying to suspend the license of a dude who was visiting from Virginia for not registering his car here

Without the bureaucracy, who would tell people who live in other states that we'll suspend your license if you visit for too long?

Land use kerffufle over the Atlantic Path in Rockport

Oceanfront homeowner wants to block access to the rocks and path between her house and the ocean.

One one hand, it settled private property. On the other hand, she bought the house with full knowledge that the 1887 deed included a public-use clause. The property owner is trying to have that deeded public access removed.

On the third hand, it's a larger discussion of the power governments, including towns, have over land use. A wealthy-enough homeowner can basically use lawsuits to bully small towns into giving them concessions on their property rights.

On behalf of the Red Sox, MLB is trying to trademark the name "Boston" for clothes and entertainment services.

On the spectrum of state-enforced intellectual property enforcement, this one would be a joke. Fortunately it's not going to go anywhere.

It's a 'patrol rifle' when an agent of the state loses one, but it's a "deadly weapon of war" when I have one in my safe...

Hello! Is this still an active group? If so, does anyone know of an in-person libertarian group in the state? I would love to meet up with some like-minded people!

Mass Libertarians, join the fray in the Model Libertarian Party - fun and engaging

Hello, fellow Defenders of Liberty!

I created this thread to tell you about another Liberty minded political community here on reddit: the Model Libertarian Party of /r/ModelUSGov. The Model Libertarian party is a big-tent libertarian organization within the larger Model US Government composed of some of reddit's finest activists and debaters. We are united under the cause of liberty and creating common-sense solutions to political issues. Our party is one of many within the model government, including but not limited to: the Socialist Party, the Republican Party, the Democratic Party, the Green-Left Party, and the Distributist party What exactly is /r/ModelUSGov ?

To explain, /r/ModelUSGov is a simulation of the US Government filled with redditors. We are congressmen, senators, governors, assemblymen, cabinet members, reporters, pundits, and justices. We debate, cut deals, pass bills, and stand on principle.

Our party has opened up a lot of new opportunities for new members to pursue. Joining our party now would mean you’d have the chance to shape the future of not just Model Libertarian Party but potentially the entire model nation. Why should I join the Model Libertarians?

  • It is a great way to meet like-minded individuals, build great friendships, and grow the libertarian community.
  • It gives libertarians the chance to discuss ideas and help each other out with political issues.
  • It allows libertarians to challenge their positions and solidify their views with facts and evidence.
  • It helps libertarians have a greater understanding of the political system, in order to better participate within the framework of real world politics.
  • It gives Libertarians a chance to test their skills in political advocacy by writing bills and debating those proposed by others.
  • Members can run for political office, become chiefs of staff, join the recruiting team, become part of the party leadership, or be casual commenters on the model government's politics.
  • It gives libertarians a platform to spread sensible ideas on government reform.

This Sounds Great! How do I join?

To join, all you have to do is visit this Join a Party thread on /r/modelusgov and ask to join the Libertarians. All libertarians and liberty-minded individuals are accepted and warmly welcomed!

We look forward to defending Liberty with you!
