What makes Malian music so unique?

I have recently gotten more into listening to music from different parts of Africa. What I found is that most of the time I really like a musician or song it turns out they are from Mali. What are your thoughts on what makes Mali music so appealing? It also seems that Malian people really appreciate music and sound, so I was wondering how that came to be as well?

Will Mali make their debut at the 2026 world cup?

What is the mood like in the country? Are Malians optimistic of beating Ghana to the world cup ticket?

Visiting Bamako

My Malian fiancée and I have been together for a few years and wants me to meet/stay with his family in Bamako. I’ve visited West Africa before, speak French and a little Bambara, and will be with him at all times (he is familiar with the area as he grew up there). The US website says that it is highly dangerous for Americans to visit so should I reconsider?

Which dishes best represent the cuisine of Mali?

Hi Mali! I'm doing a cooking challenge in which I cook food from a different country each week. Mali is coming up soon and I would love some help working out what I should make. Throughout the week I have time to make a few different meals. They can be for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, and I can also make snacks or drinks and maybe a dessert - basically anything!

So far, I'm interested in making:

  • Tiga diga na
  • Labadja

What else do you think I should make? I'd love to hear your suggestions, and I would also love any links to authentic recipes if you have them!

Hey yall - how do those of you in the USA access ORTM and Africable? I’ve been using ASTv for the past few years but I’m looking to cut down on expenses. Is there any way to access these Malian channels for free?

Injustice in Africa

Why don't African countries do justice for narcissistic or evil men? Why don't they protect innocent women?

Kunsigi question?

I studied in Bamako 20 years ago. An old woman said something that I'm trying to translate for a small poem I am writing.

I believe she said, "Kunsigi blema akign" which translates to "white hair is nice."

(Kunseegee blay-ma akai)

Is this accurate? Google translate isn't helping me.

I promise the poem isn't racist lol.

CMAS banned

Hello everyone,

What do you think of the Malian authorities banning CMAS ? Is it yet another sign that we are dangerously shifting towards a dictatorship or an authoritarian regime? Or is it the price to pay for stability as the association has clearly started callimg for opposing the transition authorities?

Researching the connection between MUSIC and POLITICS in modern day Mali

Hello everyone, I’m a Bachelor’s student writing my seminar paper on the connection between music and politics in Mali. I’m mostly basing myself on past research, but would love to further broaden my perspective on Mali’s music scene beyond what’s written in academic papers. Can you recommend any politically significant music/musicians I can look into and use as examples in my work? Furthermore, I’m looking to connect with people who speak any Mande languages and people who speak Tamashek, to help me translate some song lyrics and generally just get to know and hear your take on the issue I’m researching. My work would not feel complete if I only base myself on western knowledge, please help me deepen my connection to the music of your country. As a longtime fan of the music coming out of Mali, better understanding lyrics and themes would also be a personal dream come true. If you are willing to connect, please write me a message and we can exchange emails. Thank you!

Registering SIM card in Mali?

I’m going to Mali next week and I am planning to buy a SIM card for internet while I’m there. I’ve spent lots of time in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire and accessibility to SIM cards has changed in the past few years with requiring ID cards in order to register.

What is the process for registering a SIM card in Mali? Can I register one with a foreign passport?

If it’s possible, what is the telecom with the most reliable network? (Around Bamako)
