Need help on where to start

I want to become a makeup artist but I’m not sure how to start. I’m really great at doing eyeshadow and have practiced on others before. I feel comfortable in that area but I don’t know how to do eyebrows, don’t about other skin tones, the color theory and not great at eyeliner. I never learned eyebrows but I already have thick brows everytime I tried they came out looking really boxy. These are skills I want to work on. What are some schools here in nyc that you guys would recommend? I want something that’s affordable too. I’m assuming that a makeup license is required to be a makeup artist. Someone help please I’d appreciate it a lot. I’m so lost.

Can I de-pot a shimmer shade to make a loose glitter pigment?

Title is fairly self-explanatory, but I felt it might be helpful to include some details as well…

I recently bought some Beauty Bay and Juvia’s Place palettes, both of which contain some really pretty shimmer shades. However, I am using these products for drag makeup, and I don’t want a slight wash of sparkle - I want a notable, glittery, holographic effect that shines across the entire cut crease - so these shimmer shades have been a bit underwhelming. Here’s my question: can I scrape one of these shades out of the pan, combine with a bit of primer or aloe to make it stick, and then apply it like a loose glitter pigment? I’m about ready to just give it a go, but I couldn’t find much guidance about this online, so I figured Reddit was the best place to ask. I have only started to seriously use makeup in the past couple months, so any advice is genuinely appreciated! 💕

Best lightweight foundation

I need help looking for a foundation (or really any base) that you can’t feel when you wear it. I’ve been using a Mary Kay foundation my cousin gave me, and it feels decent on the skin but I prefer foundations that can be found in store (and you don’t have to order from someone). I think I have combination skin, my cheeks and forehead get greasy but around my nose and mouth gets dry and cakey.

I’ve tried using the fit me maybelline, L’Oréal true match, Elf CC cream, Elf Flawless Finish, and L’Oréal Infalliable and I didn’t like them very much. No matter how little I used, I could still feel them and I felt icky.

Is there anything that you could recommend? Thank you!!

Constructive criticism only please

I am learning and I've been watching tutorials and such for a few weeks, I've just learned the tape eyeliner trick, and I've discovered my eyes are asymmetrical to a small degree, my lips are also asymmetrical but I don't like over lining my lips, I feel it doesn't suit me.

Any tips you can offer, or color recommendations? And also (how in the WORLD do I color match foundation to my skin tone? I'm not wearing any)

I hate POWDER 💨 eyeshadow and blush (and to a slightly lesser degree, highlight and bronzer)

What's the deal with these pressed powders? I don't get it I don't understand what I'm doing wrong 😭 I feel like even when I do prep and use primer and setting spray, anywhere I put pressed powder just gets crusty, creased, and miserable.

I've got a range of brands, from dollar store tier (Ioni and LA Colors) to prestige (Benefit) and I hate every last powder I have (other than my loose Airspun translucent setting powder)

Meanwhile liquid/cream products are great. I got an LA Colors knockoff of Benefit Hi Beam and it works fine. I also like the Nyx jumbo pencils ✏️ which I guess are gel and I even have some I use on my nose and cheeks as highlight.

Why do powders suck so bad for me?

ISO of Light/Med coverage foundation

Hello! I have never been a foundation girlie unless I am doing a theatre performance. But now at 40, there is some discoloration that I would like to blur before applying my blush etc.

I feel best in light coverage (maybe a BB/CC cream?). I tested IT cosmetics CC Cream yesterday but it seemed to be very opaque AND exacerbated the lines on my hand so those are not attractive features. Previously I used powder foundation so this is all new to me.

My only personal preference is for a Cruelty Free brand. THANK YOU!

How do I do Jaime French's eye makeup

She's a youtuber, I think she's really funny. Anyway, I am new to makeup and would love to recreate her usual eye look. It's so subtle and so pretty and would make a great everyday look. I'm also curious what other products you guys think she usually wears.

Make up that resist a looooot of sweating

Hi,

I've never used make up before and I'm starting to consider wearing make up to swing social dances and dance festivals.

These are places were one sweats A LOT, like for real, it's the equivalent of running a sprint after another all night long. I sweat more in a swing dance festival than at the gym. So we are not talking of resisting the light sweat of a dancing at a wedding party.

I have never used make up so far, but i watched some youtube videos and my understanding is that this is a good starting point for a newbie:

  1. foundation

  2. concealer

  3. eye mask

  4. blush

  5. contour

I'm extremely afraid of buying make up and then realizing that while dancing it's starts to slide/run down and everyone noticing it but me.

Which products do you recommend for each of those types?

Small disclaimer: i'm completely illiterate in terms of make up, so i don't even know which brands are good and which ones are bad. If you are going to recommend some generic things like "avoid X ingredient" or "anything that says the word", could you please also name a specific product that you trust?

Seeking Advice for Formal Event :)

Hi! I’m new here and would love advice from more experienced folks. ;) I hope this post is ok - I apologize if not! (I am posting this in another makeup sub as well).

I am attending a large formal (black tie) event where I will be speaking on stage. I’m not a total makeup novice, but I’m certainly not a makeup artist!

I was hoping some of you much more talented and skilled makeup artists could share a few things I could do to “spruce up” my makeup for this special event.

For context, when I am attending a more formal event, I would do a fairly simple routine: -•••moisturizer -•••primer -•••light foundation -•••eyeliner -•••black mascara -•••brown colored brow gel
-•••blush -•••possibly some bronzer -•••natural lip color (usually a mildly colored balm) -•••setting spray

I have never been able to master a good eyeshadow technique, but sometimes I’ll add a light pearl or iridescent color to the corners of my eyes for a “pop” ;)

Is there anything I can / should do to add a little flare and look my best since I’ll be in photos and (briefly) under some stage lights? (Fake eyelashes? Special setting powder? Specific contouring? Specific brands of anything? Illuminators? Etc…) Please keep in mind that my expertise and skillset re: makeup is limited to the basics.

Additional info if helpful: I am a white, mid-30s female with brown hair and eyes will be wearing a long gown but I don’t know which color yet. I look best in “fall” colors - dark greens, navy, maroon, burnt orange, brown, and the like. Don’t know if this is relevant but figured I’d share!

Open to any suggestions and very appreciative of your help! :)

Help with my foundation!

I wear moisturizer and sunscreen plus another layer of tinted sunscreen for face makeup. I use dry powder to set my face and then face setting spray. The rest of my face always looks good/ natural but it always looks blotched near my nose on the inner cheeks and crinkles under my eyes. I need help? Should I switch to a real foundation? (I don’t really like wearing foundation) Is there something I can do to fix this?

Make up look with just eyes and lips?

Hey y’all, I need your help. I never really got into make up, but as I am more and more interested in more dark and chic outfits I do want to enhance my look with fitting make up. I wear mostly black and used to wear just eyeliner in my teens, now I want darker eyes and lips, but do not want to use foundation, highlighter or anything like that as I don’t like the feeling of it and because I don’t feel like myself wearing that. Do you think that’s possible and that it can look good? Or do you have other recommendations to make the look more cohesive? What is there to look out for so that the colours and techniques I use don’t just enhance any skin differences, redness etc., I might have? I do have fairly clear skin but larger pores, some freckles and tend to blush easily. My hair and eyes are mid brown. I understand that it would be easier with a reference picture, but I don’t feel confident posting one of myself. So I would appreciate any general advice! Thank you 🙏

Sooooo I learned about ingredients of foundation + primer and now I’m wondering something…

I was recently informed that you want the base of your primer and foundation to be the same (silicone based foundation + silicone based primer vs water based foundation + water based primer) and that if they’re not the same, they can look cakey and separate on your face.

So now I’m wondering, is there info on whether you should use a silicone based combo with a beauty blender which is obviously full of water? Should I stop using a beauty blender?

What is the best applicator for a silicone or glycerin based foundation?

How can I stop concealer from fading away quickly?

I use concealer casually almost everyday just because I have very noticeable under eyes, and I usually just use it alone or with blush. But the issue is it always fades away or gets wiped off or comes off within like the first hour. Is there something I’m doing wrong, or need to do differently, am I applying it wrong, or is it the brand? It’s not a full face of makeup or anything, I just want to be able to use concealer on a regular day-to-day basis without it going away so quickly. It always ends up looking like I never put on concealer in the first place. And to be honest it doesn’t really cover up my darkness very well in person because you can still see it after I’ve just applied it which is weird (it does cover it up if you look on camera though). Edit: I use Tarte radiant creamy concealer

Makeup Primer

I have sleep apnea and where my mask lies on my face my pores have gotten HUGE! Do you know of a good primer or product that can help blur pores? Price doesn't really matter. I was thinking either o/s, tatcha silk canvas, or Il Makiage. Please help!
