I just got done listening to the big show this week. One of the things I have always loved about the show is that Kai, Molly, and Kimberly bring themselves to the stories they tell and always seem to have empathy for the people they are reporting on. I was literally thinking to myself that it feels like Amy (the fill in) doesn't have any empathy for what she's talking about. She reports with no feeling and in my opinion, it makes her seem terrible. So it was funny when Kimberly actually said, this show is about empathy, which I had just been thinking about while listening. I can't wait til Kai gets back because I have not enjoyed the feeling I get from Amy at all. I'm sure she is a fine reporter, but she doesn't sound like anyone I would want to be around every day, which is how I consume this show. I wish they'd brought in Marielle Segara (?sp) to fill in for Kai.
What do you think? Do you like Amy? Am I being weird about this?
I’m happy about this. I like Mariel too, but Kimberly is the one that I wanted to get the full time job.
I am listening to the Monday (2/7) show and WOW Megan (I think it was Megan) is clearly sick. It is hard to listen to.. she is wheezing, out of breath from talking, and she keeps coughing. I feel horrible for her!
I find it slightly ironic that the WFH discussion has switched over to employees finding it hard to call in sick when they are working from home, and here I'm witnessing someone who clearly is sick, but pushing through for their employer.
No one I know regularly listens to Make Me Smart, which made me come here. I just found it interesting, and a little sad.
Megan- I hope you feel better!
Pretty bummed that this is the way they've decided to go with the show. I've been a loyal listener from close to day one of the weekly show and into the daily show. The relationship between Kai and Molly is really what kept me coming back. It was the perfect yin/yang. I'm not digging the constant rotation of hosts now especially since Kai is one of the people rotating. I love Kimberly, and I like Mariel (sp?) quite a bit, but they are better with Kai. I don't really like any of the men so far. Well, the world moves on and change is good to keep things moving. Hopefully they will start to settle in better soon.
Also, the new shirt should be: "Gin Is The Devil" That had me laughing at the end of the Friday show.
I was under the impression that Molly would no longer be working as a journalist, but today I happened across A DAILY PODCAST (!) which is very similar to MMS for an hour each day. It’s called This Week In Startups. Was anyone else aware of this?
Hello! Just being nebby here: does anyone know exactly what Kai doesn’t like about the host of NYT’s the Daily? He’s hinted at it a few times but, oh man, do I want to know this dirt! Also love how much shade he throws at APM, not gonna lie. That’s all. I hope yinz are as excited as I am for the return of Happy Hour Fridays! These first two weeks of 2022…woof.
That break seemed exceptionally long, didn't it? I'm happy to have MMS back in my podcast feed. It seems like the future will just be Kai and a rotating cast of co-hosts. What do you think about this?
Personally, I think it's fine. Especially since I have seen varying support for all the "new" co-hosts, so this sort of brings the best of all the choices on to the show. I still miss Molly, though.
Found this sub cuz I really needed to rant a bit.
I saw the title was excited because I thought I might finally get a good empathetic discussion to help me understand various positions on it, and as the title says, "Why".
What we got was Cheryl Harris barely able to contain her disdain for the other side and Kai and Kimberly pandering.
Kai: "Professor Harris can you start by defining Critical Race Theory?"
Harris: "No, but I can tell you why Black Lives Matter for 10 minutes"
Kai: "Yeah, I feel you"
Actually, I don't know that they could have done the interview any better. I just think Harris was the wrong guest to be interviewing.
Conversely, I thought this discussion was pretty good: https://www.reddit.com/r/OutOfTheLoop/comments/o2pb84/whats_going_on_with_critical_race_theory_why_the/
I know they never talk about the Reddit Sub, but we are here and I wanted to make a thread where we could write a little note to Molly to thank her for being a part of our lives for all these years.
I'll start by first saying that although the Bent Holiday was definitely a thing for awhile, we never even discussed the idea that Molly Wood is almost Hollywood and for whatever reason this has always made me smile. Outside of that, I've always enjoyed Molly's general optimism while still being based in reality. I cannot listen or watch news programs because of the mental toll it takes on me to see so many bad things happening. Molly and Kai's good natured laughter and support of each other in these times really felt good to me. I was able to be buoyed by their support and camaraderie for each other as if they were saying it right to me. She was the perfect foil for Kai's dark place sting (which is much closer to my own attitude). She has been an almost daily part of my life for years and she will be missed. I hope she finds peace and joy as she embarks on her new adventure.
I'm listening to the Tuesday show and this guy might be the worst guest that has ever been on the show. He did nothing to make anyone smarter about Etherium. Good goats, he just talked into circles and blamed regulators and SEC and Congress and everyone for not understanding what is happening while he completely obfuscates the topic on the show. He sounded like a used car salesman.
That sucks. I have listened to every episode since real close to the beginning, if not the first episode, which I think it was, and I love the dynamic between Molly and Kai. There have been other hosts along the way, but these two were the best together. I really hope that Kimberly Adams will be the replacement as I feel like she's the only one who has filled Molly's shoes properly. I feel like that might not work though because of the east coast/west coast time difference being what it is. Regardless, Kimberly Adams is my hope for a replacement. It's sad to hear Molly go.
They once published the opening and closing tunes to the podcast on SoundCloud (see article linked below), but it looks like they've been taken down since. Does anyone know where else we could find them?

I'm wondering how many MMS listeners are still on FB? I know that this listenership is probably the most in tune with how bad FB is, so I'm wondering if you are still on it?
I was off it for 2 years, but then I had to create a profile for Oculus and because I moved during a pandemic and wanted to join the neighborhood group. My profile has incorrect information, an approximation of my name, and I have ZERO friends. All of that to say, sadly, I do have an FB account. Do you?
The last couple of days, the news on MMS has kinda gotten me down. It's a Hollowed Out Shell of a Week. Anybody with some good news out there? I need some Make Me Smiles.
Hearing Molly talk about the idiots getting into back seats of self-driving cars reminded me that I heard stories of people doing this when "cruise control" was put into cars as an option. So, it doesn't surprise me that Tesla customers are doing this because people have been dumb forever.
I am less enthusiastic than Molly and Kai about the teacher that thought it was fine that whole teams, many teachers, and many students were forced to go home during the school year.
First off, that school sounds like it was fine with experimenting on the consequences rather than taking more precautions. Second off, what constitutes "a total disaster" to this guy. In my opinion, thinking that many students/teachers/teams spreading disease is not a total disaster is a little short sighted.
My children are teenagers and their respective schools offered hybrid, online, and fully in school. They had very few transmissions because they did not force everyone back. It's always a matter of perspective, I'm not sure what the number is for "many," but it sounded a lot like the "1% death toll is fine" argument that I've heard in a lot of spaces. This pandemic has taken a huge toll on the world both in terms of physical harm and mental harm. I also hope for schools to resume in the fall after children have the opportunity to be vaccinated, but I don't know if I will every consider enabling "many" people to spread a virus as not a disaster.
The results may have been less severe than they could have been, but it feels like the white washing of the effects of this pandemic on the "many" people who contracted it is a disaster.
Anyone know what his next chapter is? So much talent. Love his compositions.
Listened today to the Thursday show. It was funny to me because my wife bought me some jeans at the goodwill yesterday and she purposely got the size 38, which is too big for me, so that the legs might fit.
They didn't. The waste was much too big, but I really wouldn't have needed a belt because of how tight they were around my thighs and butt.
I'm a Gen-Xer and I remember the jeans of the 90s with a fondness. They were beyond relaxed. I'm sure I bought jeans that literally said they were "baggy size." I have always hated the skinny jeans thing and in my opinion, nobody looks good in them. Not even the supermodels in the ads look good. That's just my opinion though.
The trick I have found to getting jeans that are looser? Go to the hardware/farm store and buy the carpenter jeans. Not only are they bigger, but they also have an awesome pocket that perfectly fits a cell phone. I guess what I'm saying is....If you want to dress like a dude in his mid-40s, try carpenter jeans. I'm pretty sure they won't put that in GQ.
