I am currently considering getting a Maine Coon but wanted to make sure I am fully informed before I make the decision as I want to make sure my future cat would be happy! I have a few questions I was wondering if anyone would be able to help offer their advice on.
A little info about me, I am single, in my late 20's and living in a 2 bed flat. I would be keeping the potential cat indoors. I haven't owned a cat before but have had a dog and various other animals. At this stage I'd only be looking to get only 1 cat.
How long is it okay to leave them home alone? I currently WFH so it won't be left home alone too long but I'm worried if my job was office based on the future would they be okay left alone for the usual 9-5 work day?
Is an approx a 80sq.m apartment enough space for them to roam in?
How much attention and time does your Maine coon need?
Ideally I need reasonable peace and quiet during the working day while I WFH but I would have plenty of free time in the morning and evening to spend time with them.
Are Maine coons destructive?
Has your Maine coon affected your mental health in anyway? (Positively or negatively).
I suffer from anxiety and depression and feel a Maine coon may be a great companion. However, I do have anxiety about whether or not I'd be able to make them happy enough.
Any other advice or information would be great too. Thanks so much in advance!
I bought this on Amazon. It’s the big one. It’s super smooth and rolls like a dream. It is heavy, but truly nice!! Fairly easy to assemble.
We’ve had it for two days and he’s already on it on his own accord and will run without the teaser. My other cat (the one lurking on the couch) wants nothing to do with it.
I do lock it at night after a bedtime marathon so I don’t have to hear it.
10/10 would recommend.

Look how adorable they are!! 🥰
Christmas tree intrudes his personal space, I cannot see this ending well 🤣
Hi Everyone,
We have a Maine Coon, Stanley, who will be 2 on Wednesday.
He's healthy, 8kg, a nice coat (albeit he matts very easily, the vet said they have never seen such a thick coat!) he eats well, no bathroom issues.
I'm concerned he is severely bored. He sleeps 3/4's of the day (or just sits staring outside), he doesn't interact with toys much at all, nor humans. He always likes to be around us, but at a distance so he has his space. He'll never sit on your lap, or cuddle on the sofa with you.
We try to brush him, he doesn't like that (we often have to resort to trimming matts out to ensure he's comfortable), little interest in toys. Beyond getting another cat which we hope to in a year or so time, is there any other way of engaging him mentally and physically?
Thank you!
So my family and I have been discussing owning a mainecoon as a family pet.
What are something you would do differently or would recommend best practice for searching, preparing, owning a mainecoon?
Previous Dog owner. Never owned a cat or mainecoon.
Thank you.
We have two incredible Maine Coon kittens that we love very much, and a huge house with tons and tons of enrichment for them. We run them around after toys and treats at least an hour or two a day. In the last few weeks, it's like one of our boys who has always been rambunctious has gone up a whole new level, and we don't know what to do about it.
He figured out how to climb an 8' shelf and pulled down a painting framed under glass that shattered when it hit the ground.
A guest was over and didn't shut the bathroom door tight enough, so he somehow managed to get in and rip a sconce out of the wall, breaking more glass.
He's pawing at mirrors with enough force to shake them, and I'm worried he'll pull them down, too. We have a couple decently large mirrors that are anchored to the wall, but he hits them hard enough to shake and rattle loudly against the wall.
He's constantly jumping up on counters and pawing at things, like trying to pull knives out of our knife block.
We definitely don't think he's doing this on purpose or because there's something wrong behaviorally, he's just so playful and curious that he wants anything he can't have. Nothing we do for discipline seems to work at all, he totally doesn't care. We're at a loss because we know he's still a baby, but this is really concerning. It's shocking that he's broken so much glass and somehow not gotten hurt so far, but that good luck isn't going to last forever. Our home is open-concept, so we can't keep him away from everything without locking him in a single room, away from everything, and we're not willing to do that.
Does anyone have any advice??
EDIT: We neutered him at around 9 months
Just adopted Clyde today, he's 1 year and 4 months and he's a beauty! Also very big
