What is magnet fishing? Simply put, it's fishing with a magnet on the end of a rope instead of a hook. Instead of fish, we're looking for metallic objects; think of it as a sort of deep water metal detecting.
People drop all sorts of metallic things into the water, especially in heavily fished areas. From modern gadgets to historical item, you never know what you might come accross. These items are just sitting at the bottom, waiting for YOU to come recover them. What will you find? Share it with us here!

Anyone got favorite spots? So far I've tried the OMSI docks and Sellwood (located in southeast, but I get around)
I can’t find anything on Google Lens for what this might be. I thought at first it was just an old metal recruiting sign. It’s bent like it may be the top/side of some kind of box, but it’s thin like a poster sign. Any clues?
I’m dying to know if any of you have ever found a weapon while fishing that turned out to have been previously used in homicide?
Brother in law is interested, thinking about getting him one for Christmas. Would like to stay under $40 or so. Thanks.
I just got into the hobby and in my enthusiasm lost my magnet by dropping the rope. Helping me will get you $20 or a couple of beers at one of our fine breweries. Let me know.
Is drying a rope next to fire a bad idea?
Kratos poseidon vs cube magnet Am I correct in thinking even though cubes have a higher rating I.e 6000lbs for 6 sides almost the 4850lbs of the poseidon would be surely stronger as its only most strongest on the 2 flat ish sides and all round Need recommendations thanks!
Have magnets and the desire, just don’t really know where to go fishing nearby, anybody have any ideas?
Which websites sell great magnets og ships to Denmark? Other than www.treasurehunter.dk
Think it’s brass. The ball/knob end is about the size of a golfball. Found at an old dump site in New England
Why are fishing magnets with a lot of pull force so much cheaper compared to regular neodymium magnets? For example, a neodymium magnet capable of lifting 1 ton costs almost $700, but a double-sided fishing magnet with a 1-ton pull force on each side (4,000 pounds total) is only around $150
I’m going to buy my partner a magnet for Christmas? What do y’all recommend?
Magnet fishing seems like an awesome hobby, plus a great way to help the environment. As a 16 year old in Canada, how should I start? I’m not sure if you need a license or something, and what gear would you guys recommend? My budget is limited, to say the least. Any tips on how to get started is awesome.
This is myself Throwing the 8+ pounds Kratos Poseidon. Several people have posted for ways to throw so i thought i would share the way I throw.....juat make sure nobody is around you.
Anyone get any email notifications for impending sales?
Big holiday spending around the corner for some. Anyone see any deals on good magnets yet?
Hi everyone,
I'm relatively new to this hobby but have been out on a few trips so far, mostly throwing from a lake shore, and now I'm wondering how you manage to get your magnet 100+ft out to make full use of your rope before dragging it back.
Right now my technique is just to coil the rope loosely, leave about 2-3ft hanging, spin it wildly in a vertical circle then release - I do manage to un-spool all my rope most of the time, but it is getting pretty tiring. So I got to thinking, is there a better way that I'm missing? Do you all just do my crazy swing technique? Do you use something to help sling it out there? My immediate thought was those things dog walkers use to launch a ball but can't imagine they'd be strong enough to chuck a 2.5kg magnet that far without snapping. Obviously a normal fishing rod isn't going to cut it given the huge rope either.
Brand new to this but I finally used the kit I got last summer for the first time this past weekend. I caught nothing unless you count creeper vibes from the trash panda who was staring me down. Thing actually did make me nervous, I have no idea how long it was sitting there watching me before I noticed it.
Anyway. I’d been afraid to go because I was scared to get my magnet stuck on something big under water and then look like a fool trying to free it. More than that I was afraid that would happen to me and it would out me as being green and not knowing what to do. Which sounds silly now but I’ve broken the seal and I’m over that nonsense now.
Anyone else in the southern end of VT? Or the southern end of NH along the VT border who would want to go fishing with me? Or do you have any spots around here you suggest? I only went around town where I live this weekend and like I said, nothing but a raccoon staring me down. Would love to find someone else who fishes for metal.
Wondering
Temp moved to sycracuse ny for work, figured id try some magnet fishing, anyone have locations they recommend?
Few people at work suggested i try off some of the local dams, but not sure of distance yet. There is alot of waterways available
Hi. As the title says. I’m new and was looking for recommendations on some gear and generally things I might need. I’d appreciate any and all advice.
