What is magnet fishing? Simply put, it's fishing with a magnet on the end of a rope instead of a hook. Instead of fish, we're looking for metallic objects; think of it as a sort of deep water metal detecting.

People drop all sorts of metallic things into the water, especially in heavily fished areas. From modern gadgets to historical item, you never know what you might come accross. These items are just sitting at the bottom, waiting for YOU to come recover them. What will you find? Share it with us here!

Bagging your magnet/removing fine shavings?

I'm still pretty new to this hobby and as it gets warmer I want to get out again, but this last summer when I started I got a lot of fine iron silt on my magnet and found it difficult to remove, any tips for this? I think it's cool and would like to keep it if possible, and thought maybe like a bag zip tied around would be good was to make it easy, but I never see people doing this, of there a reason why? Seems like it would keep things cleaner and easier to remove

Safety tips?

I plan on buying a magnet but I'm concerned about doing something dumb/forgetful with it.

What's proper storage/transport like?

Obviously don't put it near your phone or electronics...

What else?

Tips for a beginner?

I just ordered my first starter kit and excited to try it out. I've watched a few YT videos about beginner tips and tricks. I wanted to get your thoughts as well.

So what are some tips, tricks, or 'I wish someone would have told me... ' advice that you have? Thanks in advance

Beginner

Bought this magnet and have used it once, feels nice but I’m not confident it could pull up something on the heavier side, was this a bad purchase, should I look into a a single sided magnet?

Found 45 Electric Scooters and a Gun while Magnet Fishing at a college...

We have pulled out over 200 electric scooters in the area, and during this day we found 45 Electric Scooters and a German derringer! Also found over 100 bikes and the campus police had to get involved since some of the bikes had campus permits stickers, which COULD be returned to the original owner.

Rural vs Urban Bridges

Hey guys! My son (seven) discovered magnet fishing on youtube, so.. Now we have to go magnet fishing. I ordered a 500 lb magnet kit off amazon, and here we are.

We live outside of Houston, Texas, close enough to drive in. We also have a ton of low bridges near and around our area, though it's much more rural where we actually live.

Do y'all have 'better luck' in the city, or out in the sticks? Or does it even matter?

On another note: The rivers near us are full of trees and logs. How do you keep from getting tangled in those?

Last question: What are the legalities surrounding magnet fishing? My google fu makes it seem fine in Texas, but if anyone has any actual knowledge on the topic, I'd love to know. I do have a yearly fishing permit, but somehow I don't think that'll apply here.

Thanks for any help!

How good is this magnet? Can the same be found for a lower price? How much of a difference will this make from my current 1000lb?

Question (?) about rope....

Hello to all! I am new to the art of magnet fishing and I am looking to get a good magnet, but I have a question that I'm hoping you all can be of assistance. Is there a certain rope that is optimum for fishing? I would like something that is very durable sand won't snap or get degrade over time from freshwater use. Any input is greatly appreciated.

Going magnet fishing for the first time tomorrow! Practiced today at the shore just to see how it felt dragging around.

So I know a Palomar knot is recommended most, however I’m nervous that the shorter end will come out (don’t have any electrical tape or anything either.) I did the hangman knot and burned the end so it doesn’t fray.

I also tested it briefly at the beach shore like knee deep but alas there is nothing there, I just wanted to get a feel for dragging it around. I’m going to a popular canoeing river tomorrow so I will be doing it there!

(Also, don’t judge my magnet or rope, I picked it up on a whim from Homeboy Depot. Perks of having adhd and wanting to start a new hobby every day. However I’ve been wanting to magnet fish ever since moving to Florida.)

If y’all have any rope recommendations let me know! I wanted to get a circular magnet however the only one they had did not have a hook, just a hole like a donut. Didn’t look promising lol. This magnet is 150 lb drag and the rope is 250.

Curious Cop Interested in Magnet Fishing (Flint, MI)

I went magnet fishing with my buddy when a former Flint PD officer, current park ranger officer, approached us, wondering what we were doing. After he left we decided to hit a different spot he recommended and found 2 handguns, both of which I brought to a police station and just recently was able to pick up! I'm super excited to restore the Px4 I found!

Check comments for clarification (never point a firearm at yourself, I was excited and got careless, at least it was empty)
