What is magnet fishing? Simply put, it's fishing with a magnet on the end of a rope instead of a hook. Instead of fish, we're looking for metallic objects; think of it as a sort of deep water metal detecting.

People drop all sorts of metallic things into the water, especially in heavily fished areas. From modern gadgets to historical item, you never know what you might come accross. These items are just sitting at the bottom, waiting for YOU to come recover them. What will you find? Share it with us here!

Do you need to be on a bridge to magnet fish or can you do it from the shore of a river?

Specifically the James River in Richmond. It's a very active city during the civil war and there are iron bars and other stuff all over the place. If I get stuck to a metal rod, is it over?

Interested in magnet fishing

Hello I’m starting to get interested in this hobby and wanted to know what happens to the stuff you guys find? Do you throw is away or restore it? Looking into a small bundle on amazon for $50 :) nothing too extensive since I’m new to this! Wanted to also try metal detecting but that’s for another group :) thanks!

Welp…. I guess it was meant to be

So, I’ve been interested in this hobby for a long time on and off but i had never made the initiative to purchasing as I was unsure of where to even look. So fast forward to today, I had searched up on google best magnets for beginners. It landed me on this sub and I had read a post from a woman on here stating what would be perfect to start with, very detailed as well. She had posted the link to brute Magnetics and I shot right over. Noticed they have a sale going. Checked kits and then found myself over at the summer savings spot and they had a deal but a single magnet and receive a free rope with it. found a 1200lb clamp magnet on sale $38.99 plus a code for signing up. Scrolled down and said oh cool they have a payment option. Thinking it was a pay over time. Well my dumbass added my card info and smacked the “pay with” button and realized it just charged the whole amount. So hey guys any tips for my first pull? Best locations to try? Has anyone used this one yet ? Oh and my wife is going to murder me after she sees a magnet box show up without her knowledge of me paying for it at all. 😂

First day out finds

I'm thinking the large plate is from a snowmobile? This was off a dock at local small lake that freezes over.

Location hunting tips?

I’ve been fishing for about two weeks now and haven’t found anything.

I’ve tried off all the major bridges into rivers around me, I’ve tried lakes, parks, even the main waterfront location for my city & found absolutely nothing.

The most eventful part was the cops getting call on us.

Does anyone have any tips for location hunting?

Any recommendations for spots in Northern Illinois (besides downtown Chicago)?

I just got my first kit at Farm and Fleet. I know a lot of people's first recommendations would be downtown Chicago, but I'm also looking for stuff in rural areas.

Just purchased

I've thought about it for years, never pulled the trigger until now. I bought this king Kong 1200 pound magnet setup today. Hoping I made a decent purchase. The reviews are good. I'm looking forward to using it this weekend. I live next to the puget sound, and there's a marina right down the road. I tried metal detecting which is fun, but mostly found beer caps and bullet casings. I fly drones as a hobby as well but it is an expensive hobby. Same with shooting. This should be enjoyable and cheap.

2nd day

Cast my magnet out but didn’t let out enough line. Rope was on a spool and went out about 10’. Luckily I had a hiking pole and was able to snag line and pull it back in. Moved to another spot cast my magnet and it went out but my knot was secured. Thought I lost the magnet. Went home and grabbed a hammer. After no more than 6 throws I was able to get magnet back. Didn’t get any much more than a dog tag but felt like a win. Going to try tomorrow.

Athens, GA

Hey all, I’m new to the Athens, GA area and I really expected to be pulling a lot out of the rivers here. Not so much! I might just be spoiled from the Florida intracoastal which brought stuff in constantly because of the strong tides. If anybody is in the area that would like to join up or maybe know of a decent spot feel free to let me know!

How long do you go fishing?

How long do all of you go magnet fishing for? Cause I wanna know if I’m not going fishing that long. Or if I’m not in as good of spots as some other people? I just don’t know so if anybody could tell me how long they usual go fishing for and how much they catch in the time would appreciate it very much

I found someone’s entire rig

I found this yesterday in southwest Missouri and would like to return it to its owner. If you can tell me exactly where I found it, I’ll return it to you.

"1960s" DACOR Navy Dive Knife Found While Magnet Fishing!

I went out magnet fishing and found my first ever dive knife, which happens to be a navy dive knife. I am not sure if it is an actual military distributed knife, going based off the information online, if anyone has any VERIFIED information on this piece, please let me know, I'd love to learn more about this piece.

Also I'm in no way a "knife expert" just going based on what I see, it appeared to be very similar to a survival knife I own, it definitely isn't a bayonet though 😂

Just wanted to share t-shirt

As someone who regularly goes out finding buried metal objects I made this design as a bit of fun.

If I find a dud grenade, am I likely to find live grenades if I return to that spot?

I found a dud mills 36 in a small town, there was a military base far downstream. Some of my mates are telling me not to return to the area as the risk is too great of finding one that could go off. I don't think there is since it was properly diffused so it was probably a one off war trophy. Should I return or should I write it off as a chance of finding live ordinance that would be a hassle to deal with?

Pulled two acetylene tanks out of the creek.

It looked like someone was using them for target practice. There were dents but no actual holes. The tops were knocked off. I definitely was not expecting to pull these out.
