Sword of Wealth & Power- How’s it doing for you?

Now that some of the dust has settled, how has [[Sword of Wealth and Power]] been performing for you? Any particular decks it works better than others? I’m currently trying it out in my Eris deck and the copy value is nice, though the protection hasn’t been that relevant.

What is a deck where its namesake/key card is not used anymore?

Genuinely curious.

For example Stax no longer runs [[Smokestack]] (I know that may not be the main reason for its name) and sometimes Delver doesn’t run [[Delver of Secrets]].

Any others you can come up with?

Redblast/Pyroblast

Hey i was wondering if it is possible to counter a kenrith or a najeela with a [[Pyroblast]]/redblast. I thought that [[Najeela, the Blade-Blossom]] would count as a red spell because as far as I know you can remove it with stuff like [[Doom Bade]]

How does 509.3a interact with regenerate

What im understand is that after the blocker is declared as blocking an attacking creature it means that its blocked even when the blocker would be removed by any means

For context on the specific situation the order of events would be

  • an attacker is declared
  • a blocker for that attacker is declared
  • once instants can be cast the attacking player casts murder before changing to the damage step, the defender responds by casting regenerate
  • the stack resolves backwards which means the creature gains regenerate before being killed by murder, removing it from combat
  • the damage step starts

Does the attacking creature do damage to the player now that there is no blocking creature or is the attacking creature still considered blocked because it was declared as such?

Competitive Rakdos standard deck list

I just started playing magic a few months ago and I’m ready to make a competitive standard deck, I really enjoy playing Rakdos, is this color combo competitive? And if so where could I find a deck list?

I’m open to exploring other color options as well, where should I start and what deck do you recommend I focus on?

Is the a way i can use [[great train heist]] with [[jinnie fay]] on the battlefield, use the extra combat and the create treasures mode to have the tapped treasures come in and be cats with haste, then have them untap due to the extra combat? or is there no way to have that happen? thanks

Daily Questions Thread - Ask All Your Magic Related Questions Here!

This is a place for asking simple questions that might not deserve their own thread. For example, if you have a question about a rules interaction, want sleeve and accessory recommendations, or suggestions for your new deck, then this is the place for you.

We encourage that you post any questions that you may have concerning Magic the Gathering here rather than make a separate thread for each question, though for now we won't require that you do so.

Rules Questions

Rules questions and interactions are allowed to be posted here, but if you need an answer quickly it may be best to use a dedicated resource like the 24/7 Magic the Gathering Rules Chat.

Deckbuilding Questions

If you're trying to get help with a deck, it is recommended that you post your decklist to a deckbuilding website so that it is easier to view. Some popular sites are Aetherhub, Archidekt, Deckbox, Deckstats, Moxfield, MtgGoldfish, and TappedOut.

Additionally, please include some description of what you are trying to accomplish. Don't just give us a decklist with no explanation, and don't ask extremely vague questions such as "what cards should I add to my deck to make it better?", because it's hard to give good advice in those cases. Let us know details, the more the better. Are you building with a particular strategy or theme in mind? Are there any non-obvious combo lines or synergies that people should be aware of? Are you struggling with a particular matchup, or are you finding yourself missing consistency in an important area, and need some help specifically for it? Let us know.

Commonly Asked Questions

I opened a card from a different set in my booster pack, is this unusual?

Don't worry, this is completely normal. If you opened a set booster, you have a small chance of obtaining a bonus card from a previous set. This is an extra card that does not replace any of the other cards in your pack, and is from a curated set of past hits that Wizards of the Coast has selected, which they call "The List".

You can view the contents of The List on Wizards of the Coast's official website. For example, the contents of The List for Streets of New Capenna boosters can be found here.

My foil card has a shooting start symbol over the bottom left. I can't find anything about it online.

All old-bordered foils have the shooting star symbol. Most sites that display card images just overlay a generic foil graphic over all foil cards, which doesn't include the shooting star. Your card is normal.

Hello Magic community, can you help us find a good gift for our friend?

Hey, a friend of our friendgroup is really into magic, also playing tournaments sometimes. his birthday is coming up and we don't know what to get. None of us have any idea about the game though.. We were wondering if there is a safe bet on what to get for his birthday, while not knowing his preferences on playing whatsoever? Or is it better to just get a gift card for a magic shop, even if it means that its not really personal. We are from Berlin,Germany.(i dont know if it matters)

Thanks for reading and sorry for being a total noob about this.

Is Commandfest Sydney worth it?

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone had gone to the Commandfest in Sydney in 2022 and if they found it to be worth going? Looking into the venue, it admittedly seems pretty lackluster and doesn't seem to fit too many people. I really want to go to a commandfest but still want to get my money's worth. If anyone who did go would be able to tell me about the organisation, the events being held and possible vendors/artists?

First Custom Commander Deck - Kaalia of the Vast

Hello! I am a really new player to Magic, and am looking for some advice regarding my first custom Commander deck. As the title says, my Commander is Kaalia of the Vast and I would appreciate any and all suggestions for ways to improve upon what I have built. I am just hoping to be able to compete against the more experienced players I play with casually. Thank you for taking the time to read through and check the deck out!

https://www.moxfield.com/decks/6iCLLXCwp0GquU-Z4JVSLw

I should note I have ordered a handful of dual lands to swap out some of the basic lands with.

Prediction: A sequel to The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth set is virtually inevitable. There's no way the folks at WotC aren't bending over backwards to ensure that the most popular and best selling set in 30+ years of Magic the Gathering gets a sequel.

Prediction: A sequel to The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth set is virtually inevitable. There's no way the folks at WotC aren't bending over backwards to ensure that the most popular and best selling set in 30+ years of Magic the Gathering gets a sequel.

I'm quite surprised that I never hear anybody talk about this.

I instead hear about a lot of fans fearing that LTR cards are never going to be reprinted because of licensing reasons (even though they can be reprinted if needed as Universe Within cards) but there's no reason that Magic can't reuse an IP they have already utilized for Universes Beyond and Magic has a strong history of revisiting and creating sequels to products that were very successful.

I wouldn't be surprised if they are already working on sequel Lord of the Rings projects. I imagine there could be a bonus sheet in the set that includes some of the reprints from the first LTR set including chase cards like [[Orchish Bowmasters]] and [[The One Ring]]. Maybe we'll see another Lord of the Rings Magic set sometime in the next three years or so.

We don't know the details of the agreement that Wizards of the Coast had with the Tolkien estate, for all we know it hasn't even lapsed yet. But even if it has, there's no reason to believe it can't be renewed.

Successful businesses have an incentive to double down on what their customers have indicated they enjoy and are willing to spend their hard earned money on. LTR was a remarkably successful product line so why would they not double down?

Here are some questions to encourage discussion:

  1. Do you believe at some point we will see more Lord of the Rings Magic the Gathering sets or supplemental products in the future?
  2. Would this be something you would be interested in? Why or why not?
  3. What might we expect to see in a potential new Lord of the Rings Magic products?

Rules Question:

Have a question about an interaction between [[Reflection of Kiki-Jiki]] and [[Wurmcoil Engine]]:

I use Kiki Jiki to copy the 6/6 Wurmcoil. At end of turn, I sacrifice the 6/6 Engine. Do the 3/3 Tokens get made? If they get made, do they enter the battlefield and remain since they were not the Token (Temporarily created) by Kiki-Jiki? Thank you.

Inner sleeves in BCW plastic storage box, which way do you prefer to sleeve?

I typically inner sleeve my cards from top to bottom using KMC Perfect Fits. Just picked up a BCW plastic storage box. Putting my cards in, with openside of the sleeve facing the hard plastic bottom of the box, I started to worry and began resleeving the cards, sliding the sleeve from the bottom to the top.

Stopped myself as I may be way overthinking things here. Anyone use inner sleeves on their cards in these plastic BCW storage boxes facing downwards with any bad results?

This collection is not particularly too big yet... so not too daunting to resleeve if I should. I'd prefer to inner sleeve from top to bottom as I'm used to doing, but not if it causes harm in some way long term of course.

Any insight, advice, input, very welcomed!

PSA for casual players, you’ve gotta try the best rule our pod has ever introduced.

We use this mulligan rule in commander but it likely works for other casual formats too.

You may have heard of this mulligan rule already but for those who haven’t, instead of choosing to mulligan and having to lose a card each time beyond the first, it works like this: if your opening hand does not have at least 3 lands in it, you may reveal it, set it aside and draw a new hand of 7 cards (without shuffling your deck). You can repeat this as many times as you want, always drawing back up to 7 BUT when you do get a hand with 3+ lands you have to keep it. The only exception is the first hand you draw which may be mulliganned for free regardless of how many lands it contains. If a hand has less than 3 lands you can choose to keep it anyway. Once you keep a hand, you shuffle the revealed cards into the deck or put them on the bottom (up to you).

I suggested this to my pod, saying that before the game each player could opt in or out of using this mulligan rule. Since then we have never looked back, having a non-game due to being mana-screwed or card-screwed suuuuuuucks and makes the game feel less skill-based. I cannot overstate how much this has reduced this issue and made the game so much more enjoyable.

I’m sure people can point out problems but the bottom line is, it’s usually faster (since you don’t shuffle between draws) and it made the game so much nicer to play, I cannot recommend trying this enough.

Edit: I thought the bad deck building argument might come up. Look, you’re entitled to your own opinion and you can play the game however you want but for anyone who is considering it, just try it.

Here’s my response to this argument, why does it matter? Sure it lets you get away with putting fewer lands in the deck but so what? Unless it makes the game less fun it shouldn’t matter how you build your deck in a casual pod. If this alternative mulligan rule lets me get away with cutting a few lands and adding more cards that I actually want to play then so be it. What makes putting fewer lands in a deck “bad” anyway? It’s definitely not about skilful or elegant deckbuilding, putting more lands in a deck is neither hard nor aesthetic. It’s gotta be about quality right? It makes the deck less effective. But if the alt mulligan rule makes decks with 34 lands as effective as decks with 38 lands then it is no longer “bad” deckbuilding under the alt mulligan rule. Sure it might make the deck worse under the normal mulligan rule but if you cut lands because of the alt mulligan rule then it’s probably because it’s the one you use the majority of the time, so it doesn’t really matter that it’s not as good for normal mulligan rules. If you occasionally have to play with normal mulligan rules, having 34 lands isn’t gonna make a big difference and if it does, your deckbuilding will probably change back to having more lands since 38 lands really isn’t noticeably weaker than 34 under the alt mulligan rule. Even if you still want to call it “bad” deckbuilding, I think it’s a small price to pay for the extent to which it reduces the prevalence of non-games.

My own format ideas

Lowlander - It’s Canadian Highlander, but Pauper. All commons are legal, aswell as all other cards, but rares and uncommons cost points and you can only have ten points in your deck. Rares are 2 points, Uncommons are 1, and Mythics are 5.

Homelander - It’s Highlander, again, but at least 30 cards in your deck must be from the set Homelands. (only nonbasic lands count obvs, mostly because the lands from homelands are trash)

True Magic (as Garfield intended.) - All cards are legal. This includes un cards and the power 9. You can play 4 copies of anything. Sleeves are banned.

Planewars - Well building a deck, you choose a plane. You may only use cards that appear in sets that take place EXCLUSIVELY on that plane (No horizons stuff). You can use planeswalkers from any set in any deck

Ummmmmmm actually - It’s legacy, but each player starts the game with a copy of [[flavor judge]] in play.

How many triggers in this interaction?

I'm having a little trouble racking my brain around how many triggers I would get out of these cards.

So if I have both [[The War Doctor]] and [[Clara Oswald]] as commanders, I know I get double War Doc triggers. But what happens when I add [[Passionate Archaeologist]], granting them both exile triggers?

To take it a step further, what would happen if I added [[Annie Joins Up]] into the mix? How many Passionate Archaeologist triggers would occur if I played a card from exile with all these cards on the field? Thanks!

Is there still a way to see Zendikar concept art online?

I can't find any of the concept art for the original Zendikar block online after most of the old mothership articles have been purged. I found an Imgur link (https://imgur.com/a/j2z8M) that has some of the concept art (most notable are some concept sketch for Ulamog & Emrakul) but can't find anything else. I did find a website called The Magic Multiverse Project which hosts a lot of mtg concept art but nothing from any of the Zendikar sets. Is this stuff just no longer accessible or am I missing it somewhere? TYSM!
