A subreddit for sharing and discussing magic, without any exposure. Any area of magic, be it close up, parlor, stage, busking, mentalism, coins or cards, are welcome.
This subreddit is for sharing or discussing magic - close up, parlor, stage, busking, comedy, mentalism, or otherwise.
No exposure. While discussion about magic is encouraged, any exposure (or guesses) of methodologies and effects is strictly prohibited. Do NOT ask for secrets.
No rude, unhelpful, or trollish behavior. We enforce a standard of common decency and civility here.
No Self-Promotion Only. If you want to post articles, effects, videos, or links that you created, we ask that you are a contributing member of this community. This means responding to other's posts and sharing useful advice to our community. We love having you, but when you only come around here to post stuff that benefits you, it looks fishy.
No Low-Effort Content. Low effort content is content that is typically created quickly and does not contribute to a discussion. This content often copies current trends and restates information rather than adding to the discussion. Posting a picture of a book or a DVD is considered low effort unless accompanied by something similar to listing a favorite effect/chapter/essay and why or a detailed review, not just 'It's good, I like it.'
No off-topic content or comments. Submissions should be directly related to magic and/or sleight of hand magic. Top level comments must be on topic. Lower level comments should be reasonably related to the discussion.
No backhanded compliments. If you're going to give a compliment, give one! Don't prefix it by inflating your ego - 'I saw the moves but well performed' or 'I know how it done but great job'. AKA the Chris Ramsay Rule
Follow the 9-1 Rule. For every 10 posts/comments you make, 9 of them should be something other than linking to your own content; otherwise, you risk being judged a spammer not only by the mod team but also by reddit's spam algorithms, which will automatically shadowban you.
No pirating or illegal distributing Don't link to or request magic hosted illegally online. This includes streams, torrents, cloud-hosted files, etc.
In general, keep links to your content to 1/week or talk about them a lot on Reddit.

According to this Jerx post from Dec. 7, 2020 (emphases mine):
If you’d like to go on scavenger… At some point in the last three years I did release an effect. It was a normal magic release that you can find available through pretty much any magic site online.
The idea to do this came from one of the friends and supporters of this site who is a magician/mentalist who regularly releases tricks to the magic community. He wrote me an email about one of my posts and said that I should have released it as a separate item.
This got us talking about different effects we had worked on and the response they received from other magicians.
This was an email exchange that went on for weeks and went all over the place. But the upshot of the emails was that we decided he would release a trick of mine commercially as if it was his.
We worked out the financials of how this would all go down, and a few months later I sent him three tricks to consider. I asked him what he felt was the strongest trick and the weakest. Then we agreed that he would release the weakest trick as if it was his, right around the time I released the strongest trick here on the site. (When I say “strongest and weakest,” we’re not talking about the difference between “good and bad”—it was more the difference of “great vs pretty good.”)
There wasn’t really any big purpose to this experiment. And I don’t know what, if anything, we proved. My “pretty good” trick (which he released under his name) sold very well, got a lot of praise, and generated an extended thread on the Magic Cafe that went on for months.
The better trick, which I posted here for free, created a small buzz in my email box for a couple days and then I was on to something else.
This is very little information to go off of, but in the interest of speculation... any theories on who the magician is, or what the trick was? What we know is that it came out sometime between 2017-2020, it had a lengthy Cafe thread, and was released under the name of well known creator who has likely released both magic and mentalism.
I'm not plugged in to the magic marketplace, so there are probably lots of potential suspects I'm not considering. But here are a few people that come to mind:
I thought of them mainly because he's mentioned all of these guys quite a bit in his writing and they're known for mentalism (though not quite exclusively).
If Michael Weber's material was more widely available in the magic marketplace, I would add him to the list. But it's not.
Anyway, yeah, I'm bored in the office on a Friday. Let's speculate the shit out of this.
Hey community, I've got a question for you.
I have been practicing xavior spade's twisting the asher because it's fun and I like practicing moves... but I can't find a good way to do it in performance.
I find that just the general show of skill type stuff doesn't really work for me.
Anyone have a plot for something like twisting the aces that adds a bit more story and interest?
Hi everyone! I have an old magic deck from when I was a kid, I'm trying to see if anyone recognizes it or has any information about the manufacturer.
It's a plastic deck, stripper, and marked. Images attached.

I know there are multiple quarter squeeze magic tricks out there. I am sure they're awesome, but I am seeking a version that takes Eisenhower coins.
Trying to find for personal purchase. Can anyone help? Thank you in advance.
Apologies if this isn’t the right place, but would anyone be able to point me in the right direction to get started with cube magic?
It would have to be beginner level really with chance to get trickier (pardon the pun)
Just wanted to ask anyone that has both of these tricks by Craig Petty whether they have a favourite or what is good/bad about each? Thanks for any help!
Has a one tried one the Neomagetic ring (USA Magic Tricks) or the Kinetic Ring (vanishinginc)? Or have a preferable alternative? I need to lift a small metal washer off another item. I am a woman and my hands are too small for most of the rings so any alternative suggestions would also be welcome!!
A quite important yet little has been discussed here on reddit.
How do you guys takes notes as you learn and consum contents, such as from lectures, courses, dvds, and books?
Any tips?
I remember seeing an Oil and Water that had cards with oil symbols and water symbols. I can't remember the name or who released it, though.
Are there other Oil and Water cards that do not use traditional cards?
Are there other similar packet tricks with non-traditional cards?
(Apparently, my word for the day is 'traditional'. I apologize.)

Looking for recommendations!
Are there books that people in the community would recommend on the history of magic?
Only brick and mortar Magic shop in Maryland and the dc Virginia Maryland area
This is not an ad, but I saw that this was being rereleased and I immediately had to order one. I know someone who owned a vintage crystal pyramid and even more than crystal cleaver this trick absolutely blew my mind the first time I ever saw it, and quadruply blew my mind when I learned the method (obviously no exposure here). Just thought I'd see if anyone else remembers this effect, honestly one of my favorite tricks of all time.
I’ve been practicing my cardistry on my coworkers and been doing ok, but today I flubbed up a force. I dropped theme card too many and wound up picking the wrong card.
Needless to say it was a bit disappointing but at least it wasn’t during a performance. So what are your tips on dealing with flubs both in practice and in a performance?
EDIT: Guys the support you’re giving me is awesome, thank you so much!
Hello, I’m trying to artificially age some cards (they’re the ones for The Painting by Dead Rebel) and I’ve been using a combination of 220, 320, & 400 grit sandpaper. They’re looking pretty good but still have a little of that new card shine on them. I was wondering if anyone had some tips for getting rid of that or other suggestions for “aging” cards. Thanks in advance.

I'm looking for some tricks that utilize some math principles that could be done via a prerecorded video. I'm thinking something similar to the tricks Copperfield would do for the audiences at home through their TV. It's been ages since I've seen one of those so I forget exactly how they went.
I can't count on the person watching to have a deck of cards but they'd definitely have a pen and paper, so even any effects that could leverage that would work.
I'm doing a gig for my brother's party in November; I had planned on doing a basic Cups and Balls routine, but I want to use a better wand than the one I have. Where can I get a quality wand and how much should I be prepared to pay?
Hi could anyone recommend any must know silk magic tricks? Any recommendations of books or acts to study?
I'm actively looking for, Pelican by Akira Ishizaki but seems out of stock everywhere online.
So I recently discovered that my friend (who is a huge letterkenny fan) has never had a birthday party. His parents never believed in giving him one. So a few of us are throwing a super soft birthday for him (complete with a magic show)
I'm trying to come up with a few tricks that are just quintessential kids show tricks, but adding a spin suited towards adults. If you know Wonders of the World, I'm doing a personalized version of that for him. Along with a couple dice based prediction tricks (he's a big time tabletop gamer)
Figured I would ask the group mind here what you all suggest. For what its work I live like a mile from the Magic Apple in L.A. so I can grab anything I need pretty quick.
Cheers!
Any suggestions of effects using a spectators name. Not just a sign a card trick but counting down using the spelling of the name or something more visual possibly where it appears. Even Mentalism etc. Would like to use a person's name and customize it so it feels special to them.
EDIT: I already know the spectators name since I'm going to the gig knowing the people there. I want to repeat the effect but change out the names for each spectator in a walk around style setting.

Found a deck of cards in my collection with "gone" written on the back of half of them. I can't seem to find a trick anywhere that uses this deck. I could think of a lot but does anybody know what the original trick for this deck is?
