Built in WiFi card isn't seen by lubuntu

I'd like to mention this is my first time ever using Linux I've managed to get a connection by tethering my phone via usb but I don't want this as a permanent solution so how do I get it to recognise the WiFi card built into the board?

Edit: it's a hp stream laptop

New Dragon OS question re: open ports

I recently installed Dragon OS FocalX, which is the ham radio distribution based on Lubuntu 22.04.

I got sshd and xrdp working fine to remote into it from my home wifi network. But when I configured tigervnc server to allow connections, the ports 5901 or 5902 won’t open, though I see them running in netstat -a.

Ufw firewall is disabled for now. Is there some other special wifi port filter that needs to be updated?

Issues with iPad drivers

Both in 23.10 and on 24.04 (currently running) clean installs my xpad driver is broken. Always yelling key rejected by service even other drivers like xpadneo to xpadone. As my win11 install had to do a restart each time the USB is pulled so I have no help so far to fix this. All drivers but kerxpad are removed+restart. All Xbox controllers are wired my ps5 works while wired but not by it.

What is a better browser choice?

Pre-installed Firexfox browser freezes often, and I cannot close the app/kill the app. Even the system freezes when this happens. In windows, I would press Cltr+Alt+Delete and exit from the system, it would solve the problem, but in lubuntu I have to turn it off and turn it on again. Do you guys think it is because of the browser? Which browser do you use? And are there such exiting from system options/hotkeys on lubuntu?

Noob questions from a noob

I just bought an old 12.5 inch Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga from about 10 years ago, and long story short, figured out that installing Lubuntu would significantly speed it up. I'm a Linux noob but picking stuff up pretty quickly, and I love that there's such a great community and tons of info online about how to navigate the Linuxverse.

Just sort of looking for general ideas on how to customize my setup. I'm a writer, and this laptop is going to be my travel machine, since my main rig is a 15-inch Macbook Pro. I'm happy with LibreOffice and I've installed OneDriver. I guess what I'm looking for is - those of you who are writers that use a Linux machine, how do you customize your setup to make your writing life easier, eliminate distractions, optimize functionality, and other words to that effect? Any and all ideas welcome, even those that require a learning curve - I'm happy to learn!

Thanks!

Black screen when trying to boot Lubuntu from USB key

Hi everyone, I’m new to Ubuntu and all its flavors. I recently got an old laptop (2013) that is a bit short on the CPU side to run properly on Windows 10, so I’m trying to install Lubuntu on it. I downloaded the iso for Lubuntu 22.04, followed the doc, used Rufus and a big enough USB key (16 Gb) to create a bootable USB key. I tried plugging it in and starting the laptop, but I only get a black screen (with backlighting, then no backlighting, then backlighting again… it seems like it wants to start). What is wrong here ? I didn’t do the md5 check as I don’t have bash on my main computer, but I tried downloading another version (Lubuntu 20.04) and creating the key with it, and I got the same result. I set the boot order in the bios to USB key first. However, when the key is plugged in, I noticed I can’t access the BIOS, it simply indicates what key should be used to access the BIOS (I’m already hitting it…) My laptop’s SSD is totally blank, I checked that side of the problem. I’m clueless at this point. Could you help me or suggest me something ?

Questions from a beginner

Hello everyone, 'm reaching out to this community for some much-needed assistance.

I recently dusted off an old PC with Lubuntu installed, after it had been untouched for several years. However, I'm unable to boot into the operating system due to a missing "bootable device."

Maybe is it better to reinstall Lubuntu again? I don't know if my system is x64 bit or x32, how can i find this info?

Additionally, I'm curious about Lubuntu's capabilities in terms of multimedia. Specifically, I'm wondering if Lubuntu supports DVD playback, as I'd like to use the DVD drive on my PC to watch films. Can anyone confirm whether Lubuntu is capable of reading DVD discs with a 10 yers old pc?

Thanksn advance for your help.

edit: i succeded in reinstalling lubuntu again, but now im having trouble playing some dvds, im getting the message: dvdnav: Can't read name block. Probably not a DVD-ROM device. I think is a problem to play restricted formats

Help requested: Functional login screen with scrambled and incoherent characters

Hello. Linux newbie here.

I recently installed Lubuntu 22.04.4 LTS on my old Lenovo T410 Thinkpad (2010). The install went well, and I enjoy the performance upgrade that Windows 10 and Ubuntu MATE cannot provide.

However, every time I reach the login screen, I see scrambled and incoherent characters replacing the normal text (Username, Date, Change Locale, Welcome to Lubuntu, etc.). The login screen works fine, as I can select the password box and enter my password, to reach a fully functional and un-scrambled desktop and CLI.

I attempted to restart and search up the issue, to no avail. I even attempted to reinstall Lubuntu, only to have the same problem.

I saw this post suggesting I install a new display manager (I believe that is what the software is), but I was unable to get that to work.

Any advice would be quite welcome, and my thanks in advance.

Note on hardware: I have a Lenovo T410 Thinkpad from 2010, running on a new 2.5" SSD. The computer has worked fine with Windows 10 and Ubuntu MATE, just slowly.

Edit:

I added some photos, that seem to not have been included in the original post.

The issue only occurs on reboot, not when going to Menu > Leave > Logout.

When I go to Menu > Lock Screen, I get the xscreensaver menu, which is somewhat unappealing but fully functional.

How to change view preferences in file manager?

I am using Lubuntu. As far as i remember from reading the manual, in system applications, the combination of Ctrl + P will open an options (or preferences?) tab. With the file browser that appears to not be the case. So i dont know where i should look for the setting im trying to find, which is the following:

What i want as the default.

What is currently the default.

I want the file manager to show the "Detailed List" by default. Currently, the default seems to be the icon view. When i set it to the list view, when i open a new file, it returns to the icon view. And i have to tap the detailed list option every single time. Is there a way to change that default setting?

Best Way to Install Non-Free Intel VA Driver?

Lubuntu Version: 22.04 Jammy

Hello! I’m running a Lubuntu-based distro in a VM in Proxmox, and need to get access to my Intel iGPU for H.264 encoding. I’ve enabled the VirtIO-GL (VirGL) driver for my VM, and my VM picked it up and is ready to do stuff with it.

Since this will be important later, I selected to install Third Party Packages during the install, and provided a password for Secure Boot to enable installing third party drivers. On reboot, I registered the MoK keys and rebooted after that, though I don't know how to confirm it worked.

Hello, first ever correctly passed-through graphics card (even if you're paravirtualized)!

The issue: I need to use the iGPU to accelerate H.264 encoding, which is not possible with the non-free Intel media driver, but is enabled with the non-free version. I enabled third party software during the install as mentioned above, but it didn’t pick it up.

johntdavis@DragonOS-Andromeda2:~$ apt search intel-media-va-driver

VAAPI driver for the Intel GEN8+ Graphics family

intel-media-va-driver-non-free/jammy-updates 22.3.1+ds1-1ubuntu0.1 amd64
VAAPI driver for the Intel GEN8+ Graphics family

Question: What is the best way to get the non-free Intel driver and have it replace the free one for encoding? From what I can tell, I’ve got a few options, and googling only confused me more. I’m not sure which to choose.

  1. Just install the package via apt (this seems like it might work, but I don’t know if I need to install the old one first, or if I should be doing things at a meta-package level to keep things clean, or what…)
  2. Add intel’s apt repo for this driver. Going to the manufacturer’s apt repo would usually be my first choice, but the intel instructions page for this has DEPRECIATED printed all over it, so I’m not sure if this is the way to go.
  3. Install the ubuntu-restricted-extras to cleanly get all the media codecs/drivers and fonts I might need. This seems like the way, but I’m a bit confused about the options.

johntdavis@DragonOS-Andromeda2:~$ apt search ubuntu-restricted
Sorting... Done
Full Text Search... Done
kubuntu-restricted-addons/jammy 26 amd64
Commonly used restricted packages for Kubuntu

kubuntu-restricted-extras/jammy 67 amd64

ubuntu-restricted-extras/jammy 67 amd64
Commonly used media codecs and fonts for Ubuntu

xubuntu-restricted-addons/jammy,jammy 26 all
Commonly used restricted packages for Ubuntu (transitional)

Obviously, I don’t need the xubuntu or kubuntu packages, but I’m not sure which of the others to choose. I could just install all the lubuntu and ubuntu packages, but I want to understand what I’m doing.

I’d really appreciate some help. Getting all the bits and blobs in place to get hardware acceleration going on this machine has been a surprisingly difficult process, but i’m almost there, I think.

I noticed in the Downloads section, it is planned for the beginning of 2024, but no idea which month. And is it for beginning or end of the planned month?

Thanks

Thin line of the taskbar still visible after auto hide option enabled

Version: LXQT 1.4.0

Is there any way to fix this? It kind of ruins any wallpaper, also happens if the taskbar is on the bottom of the screen. Putting a transparent color setting doesn't work either. I am fairly new to Linux.

It is truly impossible to theme Qt flatpaks without kvantum.

I really want to make the jump to lxqt but this is the one thing really bothering me about it. It makes sense to me to have to use kvantum when using a GTK based environment but when using a Qt environment I feel like it should "just work".

I understand this isn't necessarily the fault of the lxqt/lubuntu team as there is also the design of the app itself and flatpak's limitations/sand-boxing methods.

I tried a lot of things to get vlc to theme but the best I got was it copying certain highlight colors when handing it a preconfigured kdeglobals file.

I'm not sure how KDE hands off the palette to flatpak apps but surely there must be a way to implement it with lxqt?

This is more than likely just an issue with flatpaks as a whole and I remember reading something quite a while back about how the developers behind flatpak and lxqt are sort of at a stalemate for this problem saying its the other parties problem to implement/fix but not sure how true that was.

Startup issues

Hi!

I am after setting up Lubuntu 22.04.4 (the latest LTS build) on my old laptop a few days ago, and I have a weird issue that I am struggling to figure out on my own. I hope someone on here will have come across something like it before.

The issue is most likely not the quality of the download, as I spent a while figuring out whether my sha256sum hash was correct (see this post). I ended up using the ISO I got off zsync. Please do ask questions if you think it might come from there anyway.

The very first time I started up Lubuntu from the internal memory, I got a few lines of text on a black screen and then this mess: Fig. 1. I didn't take a picture of the text back then, but I am reasonably sure it was the same as in Fig. 2 below. I booted up the OS the laptop came with to make sure I didn't break something, and since it worked fine, I performed a trusty "off and back on again". That actually worked fine for a bit, although every time I booted up Lubuntu I got this, except without the artifacts: Fig. 2. Tonight, I get Fig. 2 with the artifacts, and then more of that nonsense: Fig. 3. Notice how the cursor is displayed in the middle of the screen (it can't be moved). At the very beginning I briefly get some other text, which I'll try and take a picture of too.

Sorry for the janky phone pictures of the screen, you'll understand I can't take screenshots.

Thanks in advance :)

Sound issues with Lubuntu install

Hello, I've run into som issues when I've switched from Manjaro to Lubuntu on my Laptop.

Basically, when nothing is plugged in, the system doesn't see any audio device. Pulseaudio sees only a "Dummy Output".

When I plug headphones in, sound plays from speakers, but NOT from headphones. Pulseaudio indicates that sound come from "Headphones".

In alsamixer, I only see one device which controls sound from the speakers, but are labelled as headphones.

I've seen a lot of similar issues on the internet, but not one that is exactly the same. It seems that I would need to edit de sound.conf file, but I don't where to find it, and how to edit it.

Can you help me ?

Global shortcut keys problem

I must have messed something up, so now when I type Ctrl, Alt + T the terminal doesn't launch. I get an error message saying, "Failed to execute child process "lxsession-default" (No such file or directory)

I tried adding it to the shortcut keys, but the same message comes up.
