Still filling out other room decor, but it's mostly a listening space in here.
Still pretty new at this, so I feel very grateful. Upgraded from a Douk chifi amp to a Rogue Sphinx v3 and from JBL LX300s to Maggie LRS+. Kept the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Evo TT. Wiim Ultra streamer on the way, along with a move from Bluetooth Spotify to Tidal via WiFi. I could listen to music all day.
The view from my favourite spot in the house 🤙
Finally got my system into the basement. Still a work in progress.
Also because I already wrote this.
Some overlooked gems on the list this morning.
This is such a FUN song to listen to. The way the notes jump around is enchanting. Each separate synth noise comes from a different position on stage. There no mud between the notes.
Another great example of staging. I had to do a double check that my sub was where I left it lol. There’s a kick drum going at the beginning of the song that comes in on the lower left side that’s completely disconnected from my sub which sits on the right side. It’s an interesting position for the drums to be, but I think it works because after the intro (I believe it’s the lead singer) there’s a shaker happening dead center where the singer is.
Ok I just love this one. The song itself just feels so honest to me. It’s a great male vocal showing. Sebastian Murphy’s voice is emotional and pained. The bass on this song is amazing. There’s really not much treble in this song, but the overlapping bass that’s all in different octaves is clear and doesn’t step on each other.
The cover of this album advertises “full spectrum stereo” and it does not disappoint. The guitars swell back and forth, the bass stands alone, the cymbal hits come from different positions but still where the rest of the drum kit is, the toms are the same. There’s a very high pitch organ(?) sound at the beginning that gives a good atmosphere to the intro.
It’ll make your shit bang.
If you don’t know who this is you need to. There’s a low steady bass line that’s a constant presence through this song. The way that the volume rolls in together is so soft, but when the first verse starts there’s a flawless transition. Usually with volume swell intros, it’s for the effect of a big hit that starts the song. They’re usually more violent crescendos. Here the crescendo just naturally rolls into the song and doesn’t call attention to itself. There’s whispers in parts of the song that you can almost miss they’re so delicate.
How resolving is your bass? A double bass, double bass band. Two bass guitar, double bass drummer instrumental metal. Just listen to your bass dance around is all that needs to be said. Now I know saying that could literally describe any of this bands songs because that’s just how good they are, but this song in particular is extra low with the bass and I think highlights how complementary these guys are to each other when they’re occupying the same sonic space on purpose.
I’ll admit to being guilty of not wanting to give this guy his flowers. Solely because I’m a huge Alice In Chains fan and I didn’t like the decision to replace Layne. But man this album won me over. No, he’s not Layne, but some of these songs, I can honestly imagine them being a part of the set for AiC Unplugged. They’re so intimate, but his voice conveys such a gravity to the feel of everything is very similar to what Layne was so great at for me. You could hear the pain and the struggle and all the shit in his voice. DuVall excels in drawing you into the emotion of it all.
Just inject some post punk Friday eve would ya?
