1st Christmastime in Limerick.

Yank again. I’m coming to Limerick for a couple of weeks pre-Christmas. Are there any not-to-miss Christmas events in Limerick during this time.I’m bringing a couple of other yanks who have not been to Limerick before, and I am therefore the entertainment committee. First Christmastime in Limerick for all of us. How, as you say, is the craic during this time? Is the Ferris wheel still there? We’re going there mostly to eat and drink and hike, got those parts pretty much covered. And I’ll take them to Dolan’s and the Locke bar, anything else? And Btw I know CM’s, i’ve been there. It’s great. I love it. But I don’t tell anyone. I’m not sharing it. don’t feel you need to share it either. Because, I mean, I know, honestly.…. Some American accents in Ireland are like nails on a blackboard. Not NYC accents of course. I’m just saying.

Ballybunion

Just wanted to hear yere opinion of the town these days and whether ye still choose to go down there anymore. I’m very fond of the town but i’ve seen it get much quieter. Is it still as good as a Lahinch or Kilkee in yere eyes? The nightlife down there is virtually non-existent anymore and is so expensive. Like most Limerick people I love spending my summers down there but wanted to hear whether ye still choose to do so.

Help! Need recommendation for gas boiler engineer in Limerick city area

Help! I need a recommendation for a gas boiler engineer in the Limerick city area. Mine just refuses to fire up and I'm freezing.

I got 2 recommendations from neighbours but neither of them answers my calls, voicemails or text.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Beyblade Enthusiasts?

Extremelty random (I know), but are there any Beyblade fans lurking amongst us? 👀 I have been feeling nostalgic as of late, would love to get a tournament going. I know there's an active card-game scene in Limerick, BUT WHAT ABOUT SPINNING TOPS 😭 (I know one is VERY strategy based and the other more... luck-oriented, but it's STILL extremely fun no matter how silly it may seem!)

Limerick city full irish

Yank here. I will be visiting Limerick city pre-Christmas and would appreciate some recommendations for restaurants, cafes that have excellent full Irish breakfast. And while we’re on the subject, maybe some recommendations for butchers that make their own Irish sausages and pudding.

Attic conversion in Limerick

Hello people of Limerick Reddit.

Can any of you recommend a contractor for an attic conversion in Limerick city? I’ve spoken with a couple who have been recommended but are booked up until the second half of next year.

Would love to not absolutely pay through the nose for it, but don’t want a cowboy contractor either

Looking for soldering service

Any places around that'd do a high quality soldering job? It's a modification rather than a repair job but perhaps some repair places would be willing. Specifically a Nintendo Switch mod, too precise and risky to do myself.

TIL The Great Gatsby was based on F. Scott Fitzgerald's Limerick roots

Randomly remembered someone (an old English teacher maybe) telling me F. Scott's Fitzgerald's family was from Limerick. I'd never seen it referenced anywhere so asked chatgpt about whether there really was a connection between Limerick and Fitzgerald. (I knew Fitzgerald is generally a Limerick name, ie, JFK's family were originally Fitzgerald's from near Bruff) - anyhow, here's what the search returned. I know it's not 100% reliable but it's still an interesting connection to Glin and Askeaton that wouldn't be obvious choices if it wasn't basing it on text from somewhere (I guess?)

"F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby is often seen as a quintessentially American tale, but there is a fascinating argument that parts of its inspiration trace back to Fitzgerald’s Irish heritage. Specifically, some suggest that the enigmatic Jay Gatsby may have been influenced by Fitzgerald's paternal grandfather, Edward Fitzgerald, who hailed from County Limerick.

Edward Fitzgerald emigrated from Ballydonoghue, near Glin in West Limerick, an area steeped in historical intrigue. Glin Castle, an 18th-century mansion overlooking the River Shannon, bears a striking resemblance to Gatsby’s opulent Long Island mansion. The castle was a centre of social activity for the Fitzgerald family and the surrounding gentry. Its commanding views of the Shannon echo the descriptions of Gatsby’s home, which is often portrayed as a symbol of wealth, power, and mystery.

Gatsby’s Mansion and Glin Castle

Glin Castle, home to the Fitzgerald family’s distant relatives, was renowned for its grandeur and hospitality. The lush gardens, elegant architecture, and views of the River Shannon offered a picturesque scene, much like Gatsby’s estate on West Egg overlooking the Long Island Sound. Both mansions function as central settings for lavish parties, embodying an allure that captures the imagination of those who attend. It's supposed that old family stories of parties in Ireland fuelled the young Fitzgerald's imagination.

The Parties: Hellfire Club and Askeaton Abbey

Fitzgerald’s depiction of Gatsby’s wild parties might also find roots in tales of the Hellfire Club’s infamous gatherings near Askeaton, County Limerick. The Hellfire Club, known for its hedonistic and often scandalous parties, operated out of the ruins of Askeaton Abbey in the 18th century. These gatherings were legendary for their excess, blending debauchery with a veneer of sophistication—a theme that resonates with Gatsby’s own soirées, which are filled with music, drinking, and a sense of lurking disillusionment.

The parallels between these Irish tales and Gatsby’s world suggest that Fitzgerald, whether consciously or subconsciously, infused his novel with elements of his ancestral past. While the Hellfire Club’s activities were far removed from Fitzgerald’s lifetime, their legendary status in Irish folklore could have been part of his cultural inheritance.

Gatsby and Edward Fitzgerald

F. Scott Fitzgerald’s grandfather, Edward, rose from humble beginnings in Ireland to achieve modest success in America, a narrative arc reminiscent of Gatsby’s own pursuit of the American Dream. Both figures embody a deep desire for social ascent, fuelled by ambition and a yearning to transcend their origins. Gatsby’s reinvention of himself and his pursuit of wealth and status mirror the immigrant’s journey of self-reinvention, a theme that resonated with Fitzgerald through family lore."

Kinda makes sense tbh - Fitzgerald's father was an alcoholic failure in business who lived off his wife's wealth, pretty easy to see how F. Scott would have dreamed of better times etc.

Busking In Town?

Just wondering how strict limerick city is on busking and if there's anything I need to do with the Gardaí or the council to be able to busk? Anyone know how the crowds are like as well? I used to busk in Ennis 2014-2021 and not sure how limerick is. Tried Galway once and I was shoved all over the place by shop owners that didn't want me around.

It would be a shame to scrap it all, im not in Ireland so done deal etc wouldn't be easy for us. Any suggestions?. Charity shops that would collect?

Best place to watch a Liverpool game in town.

Looking to go to town today to watch Liverpool and Man City. The last few places I have been to watch a game haven’t been ideal ie. Small TVs, no volume etc. Is there anywhere which would be a safe bet to watch it with a bit of atmosphere

Thought this practice was well gone from the street

Willie ODea topping the poll- Why?

So as expected he’s topping the poll. He’s not my cup of tea, however I am curious as to why people gave him their first preference?

I’d like to hear from people who gave him a first preference, as to why- what has he done for you?- etc.

(without getting into any bickering)
