What are the advantages or disadvantages to using recessed lights that use cans or housings versus those that are canless when building a new house, particularly when it comes to future maintenance?
For example, Elco has a standard Koto, which I believe has the power supply/driver as part of the LED module but still goes in a housing, an architectural Koto where the driver is in the housing, and a canless Koto where I believe the power supply is separate from the led module and sits on a frame that the led module is inserted into.

Similarly, Nora's Iolite has both can and canless versions but in both cases I think the driver is separate from the led module.

And DMF looks like the driver is part of the LED module.
Would I be smart to stay away from lights where the driver/power supply is integrated into the led module? If the driver fails in that style of light wouldn't that mean I had to replace the entire led module? I am afraid that 5 years down the road the manufacturers will have moved on to something else and the led modules will not be available and I will have to replace every light in the room so they match.
What is the best route to make sure that does not happen?
I can't access the wiring it's behind the wall. How would I go about replacing this? Will I need to solder the old power wire to the new puck?
I'm trying to find replacement LED bulbs for a dimmable/tunable floor lamp, but all I can find when I search on Google is smart bulbs (even when I specify not to include "smart" or "wifi" in the results), or otherwise search on retailer sites. Does anyone know of a brand or retailer (preferably in Canada) where I may be able to find a replacement that closely matches the bulb in this photo?
I'll add, I tried some smart bulbs (Philips), and they were immediately broken by trying the dimmer on the lamp, or accidentally turned off and on my lamp. I am so frustrated with them. If there's a smart brand that isn't as finnicky I'd also welcome hearing about it. Thanks!
Hi, i am planning on changing the light on a room, i have this things near 5he ceiling shown on a photo, and I am looking at 15m cob led strip 12v 320led/m 5w/m and its dimmable but i am not sure how this would work for dimable set up
if it would be regular power supply i think it would be better to distribute the power for example 3x 25w for each 5m. But for dimable how its usually done?
I flipped all the circuit breakers labeled washer, dryer, kitchen, dining room, etc. None of them turned off the power to the ceiling mounted light in the laundry room which is just inside the garage to house entry and adjoining the kitchen. I can obviously flip the main switch to kill power to the whole house to replace the light fixture but find it odd it isn't tied into any of the individual circuit breakers. I also noticed when I flipped the breaker labeled garage, it turned off the garage door opener light but not the 2 lights mounted to the ceiling in the garage.
I have seen some weird shit. The house I have been renting has a yard lamp that has no direct shut off. Not even a wall switch anywhere. An electrician finally discovered some genius wired it to an outlet in the guest bedroom which is in turn on an arc fault circuit.
Should I be concerned about this? It doesn't seem logical a builder would have wired in a light that somehow gets magic power separate from the rest of the house.
Hi we are remodeling our kitchen and dining room completely and I’m looking for lighting options. I’m a lighting guy by trade but for entertainment and rock ‘n roll so I need your guys help. We will not have any upper cabinets in the kitchen and the down lights there will straight light up the counter area. I like to put in 2” or 3” Led spot cans. Our contractor recommended Juno wafer down lights but reading a lot around here I do not like that option. I would like to have a tight beam/spot light on the counters without having a flood light effect. I looked at the Elco Koto lights since they come with beam options to open the beam or making them tighter/ narrower. I really like them. But they are on the top of the $$$ end. Are there any other cheaper options? What do you guys recommend? In the dining room we will have a center light over the table and in each corner a recessed light. Which will be more of a general light. I don’t need any fancy rgb options. Thanks for the help.
I'm trying to replace a bunch of these 7" round LED fixtures but can't figure out how to find them on Home Depot or Amazon. How do people usually do these?
Here is a photo: https://i.postimg.cc/N0fs17fW/IMG-3540.jpg
I of course removed the screws, but nothing is turning, also it seems there are spring mechanisms. Can anybody help to nail it down what this is?
Hi everyone,
I'm looking for some tips on how to achieve this effect. I'm assuming I can use LED strips but I'm wondering if there is an alternative. Any recommendations would be appreciated! Cheers!
I’m building a new wood shop. Dimensions are 30’x60’ with 13’ ceilings.
Anybody have some shop lights that they really like?
Hey y'all.
I'm thinking of adding recessed lighting to a few rooms in my mid-century colonial house that was built with no lighting anywhere. Probably 20 lights total, maybe more once I get these in as updates to existing shitty cans.
I'm looking at a few models, but am currently between the Elco Oak and Elco Koto lights. I've been googling/youtubing like crazy, but I'm struggling to find what I'm looking for in reviews and had a couple of qs I was hoping this community may be able to answer with some expertise.
Thanks y'all in advance for the insights and discussion!
New home and need to replace a burned out GL10 bulb and the fixture doesn’t twist or pull for access to the bulb. Any ideas on how to access bulb without damaging the fixture?
It seems like 750 lux would be difficult to achieve with recessed cans, since each can produces so little light. Got any brilliant design ideas, while staying in the domain of “home” aesthetics?
we’re in middle of a big renovation and after already committing to line of bathroom fixtures/faucets, i realized there seems to be a kind of greenish/yellowish tint to the metal that i don’t like. it’s supposed to be more rose gold—so pinkish/reddish.
is this something i can improve with lighting? is there a color light that will bring out the pink in the metal vs the yellow?
as an added twist, the surrounding tile will be blue/green/gray… so in the process of making the fixtures look better, i don’t want to make those look worse…
help?
I recently bought a headboard with some built in dimming lights that weren’t working, I replaced the switch with a Leviton 6604 2 rotary dimmer switch (it was the closest match I could find to the original) the lights work now and dim, but they only come on when the dial is about half way up then I can turn it back to dim them, or up to make them brighter, I can’t find any instructions online about how to adjust this dimmer. Any help is appreciated
Hello, I recently bought and installed these battery powered sconces. I naively thought that I would be able to replace the cool white bulbs with Hue bulbs but that did not work. I think there is a 3 watt limit for the lamp. Does anyone know a way I could make the light warmer or a brand of light bulbs with a similar design with warm light at low wattage? Or if there is another reason I am missing that other bulbs are working with the lamps?
They are “Battery Operated Wall Sconce Set of 2, Black Wireless Rechargeable Wall Mounted Lamp with Bulb, Modern Dimmable Indoor Non-Hardwired Decor Wall Lighting Fixture for Bedroom Living Room Mirror Bathroom” on Amazon
Our kitchen has a 24” square fluorescent light fixture. While changing the bulbs recently, we struggled getting the light filter off and broke it. I’m not sure how to search this because all we are finding are the flat ones and we’d really like to match this one. Any ideas of how to search for this or where to find a replacement?
Hi, im looking for wireless lights that I can stick on the drywall and my closet. I dont want to put holes in the wall and it needs to be bright enough for the mirror. Ideally 3 lights to go above my head and on either side. Thanks

I am currently trying to figure out how to power my 10 puddle lights that will go under the car. But the things is I want to have two power source. One that turns on with the dome lights and one that turns on with the headlights. This is so that when I unlocked the car the LED lights turn on and the other is for when the headlamp turns on the LED lights turn on as well and I'm only running it from the fuse box (easier to make a cleaner look), I don't want to t-tap any wires. Both of them are 15A fuses(dome light and low-headlamp) but what I'm worried about is, can I piggyback both of the wires from the low-beam headlamp and also dome light, adding another 10A or 15A fuses between each piggyback, and join them together at the power side of the led light and be safe? I'd hate to send power to the headlamp when it not on and vice versa or blow a fuse or light. Negative will ground to anything that close.
