Writer comments extremely narrow? Is there a fix?

I've seen other people complain about this so I know it's not just me, but I've also seen screenshots of people with normal-looking comment sidebars, so I know this isn't normal. I just typed up a comment ("This is how much text I can fit on one line of a comment") and the comment pane is so narrow that it breaks up as "This is how / much text I / can fit on / one line of a / comment." That's unusable for me. Is there some setting I'm not noticing where I can fix this?

I just downloaded version 24.2.2.2 from whatever I was using before, no change. The computer I'm using has a display resolution of 3840 x 2160, set to scale at 250% because it's a small laptop screen, and that does occasionally cause problems, but when I change the scale nothing happens (still a very narrow band of comment next to my document)

TexMath not working for version compatibility reasons

Hello,

I would like to use the TexMath extension with LibreOffice writer, but it doesn't seem to work anymore for version compatibility reasons.

I have a LaTeX installation, that's not the problem.

What is the latest version of LibreOffice that works with the most up-to-date version of TexMath?

They say 3.3 when you download the extension, but that seems to be wrong.

Large powerpoint slides cause crash in libre office and send me to linux mint login screen.

I have recently setup a linux mint machine (old laptop, dell inspiron n5010, i7 620m with 8 gb ram) and while i really like it, I'm having an issue with the libre office powerpoint counterpart. I have created some presentations in powerpoint and apple's keynote that have 56x56 inch slide size - meant for some figures, not for screen presentations. When i try to open these files, libre office crashes and linux mint goes to the login screen. Someone on google suggested to change files names. That does not work. Anyone with advice about this issue? Thanks in advance.

Libreoffice lost out for Brazilian state company rollout

Interesting to read that libreoffice has allegedly lost out to Onlyoffice for a state company rollout in Brazil (20,000 users).

I've put a link to the comment on the rollout below. Apprently the test group reacted poorly to the default libreoffice UI. The tabbed UI wasn't tested because it is not the default. Link to post below. I haven't been able to find any independent confirmation of the rollout and the author of the thread hasn't offered any means to verify the information or their own identity.

(LO Calc) How do I insert a cell value in a string as a variable?

Say I have two cells:

A1 holds a string value

A2 holds a string into which the value of A1 is inserted somewhere, ie. "This individual's last name is <<A1>>."

Strange image retention issue on 2012 MacBook Pro

I've been using LibreOffice on my MacBook Pro 13" Mid-2012 for a while now, and it's worked very well. However, I recently came across this strange issue that I can't seem to solve. When the GUI is set to a dark appearance, I see this strange image retention glitch. It is most noticeable in the Preferences pane (see image for example), but if I resize toolbars when working on a document, it'll show remnants of that toolbar as well. When browsing through the different settings tabs, it'll retain the previous pane in the background with the selected pane in the foreground. If I switch tabs again, whatever was the foreground will become the background, et cetera. Light mode works normally.

I've tried playing around with the Skia rendering settings, reinstalling LO 24.2, installing 7.5 and 7.6 as well. It happens across all versions. My 2018 Mac mini and M1 MacBook Pro don't seem to show the same issue, however. I don't think it's hardware-related since this is the only app I've had trouble with on this machine. Any ideas as to the cause of the problem and how I could solve it? Happy to provide further information if required.

MacBook Pro 13" Mid-2012 (A1278), Core i5, 8GB RAM, Catalina 10.15.7, tested up to LO 24.2.2.2.

[Libre Office Calc] A question about data reorganization

Sorry I'm pretty new to Libre Office>! (that's a lie, I'm just bad at it) !<and I wanted to know whether or not Libre Office Calc had a special paste function to rearrange cells to fit a column with only some row values in common, possibly in a different order. What I just wrote is incomprehensible so I'll try to explain.

I have a dozen spreadsheets with a set of variables with values attached to about 130 cities. Each spreadsheet is the data for one year. So for example an extract of year 1 looks like this:

Year 1

In truth there are 56 columns and between 100 and 130 rows in each spreadsheet depending on the year. The order in which the cities are presented may also slightly vary from one spreadsheet to another. What I want to do is to create a separate spreadsheet for each column label as an independent variable covering all the years for each city, knowing some of them are not accounted for at the start. Basically what I want is 55 .csv spreadsheets organized as such:

Spreadsheet \"CHO-CAS\"

Is there a way to pull this off within Calc, or should I use something like R to rearrange the data in my spreadsheets?

Dark Mode no available?

Just installed LibreOffice and am just trying to make it easier on my eyes, however the option seen in this picture for "LibreOffice Dark" does not exist in my options. I only see "LibreOffice." Every dark guide I read online directs you to change this setting and I see no other qualifiers for how to obtain it, so I'm figuring it just didn't come installed?.. How exactly should I address this?

Questions about decimal subtraction in Calc

I put .01 in A1, .02 in B1, the formula =A1-B1 in C1

I put .02 in A2, .03 in B2, the formula =A2-B2 in C2

I extend it 1000 rows. The results in the C column look fine, but if I click on the results in some rows, the answer is not -.01, as expected. If I expand the C column width the errors become apparent.

Why is it that rows 13 to 24 have the result -0.00999999999999998 instead of -.01? Results are as expected, -.01, from row 1 to 12 and 25 to 199. But at row 200: -0.00999999999999979. Row 201 to 399: -0.0100000000000002. Back to -0.00999999999999979 400 on.

... is my computer broken?

Read Error. Format error discovered in the file in sub-document content.xml at 2,44160(row,col).

Hi guys. I'm getting this error on opening my spreadsheet. I have hunted around and found that this is a known issue with libreoffice 7.0.4. This is a discussion of the problem: https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=84621

The problem was first noted in 2014 and the fix made it's way into 7.2.0 in 2021.

I updated Debian to bookworm with LibreOffice 7.4.7.2:
Version: 7.4.7.2 / LibreOffice Community
Build ID: 40(Build:2)
CPU threads: 8; OS: Linux 5.4; UI render: default; VCL: x11 Locale: en-US (C.UTF-8); UI: en-US
Debian package version: 4:7.4.7-1+deb12u1
Calc: threaded

Not surprisingly LibreOffice doesn't fix malformed XML. I've tried to play with the XML file but I'm too stupid to do it. This is what Firefox says about it:

XML Parsing Error: mismatched tag. Expected: </table:table>.
Location: file:///*redacted*/content.xml
Line Number 2, Column 44138:

There are only two line in the file and it won't pretty print because malformed XML. The place it wants me to put an end table tag is in the middle of a tag.

Is there any way to save my document?

"versions" only available on non-flat ODT? (writer)

Is there a reason that "versions" as a feature is only available when saved as a non-flat ODT? Depending on the document sometimes I want to use something more fully featured like Git for VC but for smaller documents just using the builtin versioning is fine (though I do wish there was some auto-versioning) and preferable to needing to deal with using something bigger than necessary like git. When you're using an external VC you should save as a flat ODT file so that the differences in the file can be easily cataloged but if you do that then the builtin versioning doesn't work anymore for some reason despite (as I understand it) the file format itself containing the exact same information. (non-flat ODTs just have some compression whiich screws with external VC) Is this a bug or is there an actual reason behind it that I'm missing?

It's minor but I've noticed a few times that I've been saving the document as a flat ODT and not getting versioning which can be annoying so I'm curious if there is a reason why it's greyed-out/disabled when it's saved as .fodt but works fine as .odt.

Is there no option for having notes in a document in Writer?

I'm working on writing some lengthy things for the first time in a LONG time and I want to have a set of notes and outline for what I'm planning on doing visible within the document. I would think this would be a common idea and that there should be an option to use the huge amounts of free space on either side of the document to have a spot where you can organize your thoughts and have an outline of what you're going to be writing but there doesn't seem to be an option for that. Am I missing something?

Do people just have notes, outlines, and ideas for a document in a separate one until they get to the point where they need them? Seems inefficient.

I'm running 7.5.9.2 though I doubt that makes a difference.

XY Scatter chart of Data over Time troubles

Hello,

I am trying to build a chart from data over time, I have three columns of data (eg trucks/planes/boats [built]) and one column of dates. Dates are either in fiscal (financial) years (eg "1972-73") or quarterly (eg "1981 Q2").

I tried graphing the data with fiscal years and well it worked with the values but it can't take into account the years, even when manually inputting the x value range into each XY scatter series it seems to ignore them, same goes for quarterly. Formatting the cells either does nothing or the preview shows the year 1899, so somehow for some reason it can't consider it as a date?

Btw, since I am already posting, I also wanted to mention that for some reason every formatting window in calc takes 7 seconds to load each time. I tried turning off skia (as mentioned in one post), but that only made it slower.

LO give me the impression to waddle in a bog

Hello,

There might be something i do wrong, hopefully someone will be able to help me.

I've several issues:

  1. It's sluggish. It takes ages to open a page, before i can write, to scroll up or down I've to drag down the cursor, to right click takes ages, everything gave me the impression to be stuck in a quagmire. And there seems not to be way to increase it's memory.
  2. I asked it to autocorrect and yet it doesn't do it, or very erratically. Uppercase accents etc. will sometimes be added and sometimes not. My system is in English, so is LO but I'm a polyglot and write in English and French on a daily basis.
  3. I seem not to be able to switch to any language beside French and English. I implemented other languages, including Asians and yet I cannot switch to it or write in them?
  4. I usually use .odt and docx formats.

Thank you for reading.

Enforce certain writing for a word

(SOLVED)

I keep running into a small issue: I am writing a paper (and might have to make a few more) and one of the terms inside it is "Edmont"

Libre keeps changing it to Edmond. I made it remember that Edmont is NOT a typo, so I don't get the red lines beneath it, but it STILL automatically turns Edmont into Edmond. Now I can of course keep doing the whole "Find & Replace" spiel every time, but considering all the companies that use "typo-ed" variations of common words, I'd like to assume that there is a setting somewhere where I can force Libre to prioritize one correct word over another to save myself the time (and avoid accidentally forgetting to correct it at the end)? Aka, I can tell it to FIRST suggest "Edmont", and deem that the primary way of writing?

Would anyone here know how and where to do so?

(I am using LibreOffice 7.6.2.1, and am writing in .odt format)

Hotkey to increment a highlighted cell by 1 in Calc

Is there an option to automatically add 1 to the value of any given cell just by clicking on it and pressing a key on the keyboard? Like if I highlight a cell that reads a number like 23, I can just press the ] key on my keyboard and it moves up to 24.

If it's important at all, I'm on Linux Mint running LibreOffice version 7.3.7.2

change to format of cross references in 7.4

I am puzzled. I recently upgraded libreoffice and the format of cross-references changed. There is an extra space at the beginning and third levels end with a bracket. I preferred it how it was before. Is there anyway of controlling this.

I can't underline

Whenever I try to underline with custom fonts (f.e Helvetica Neue, Vinron...) it doesn't work, but when I press enter, the underlining appears in the line above, but as soon as I write on that new line I just created by pressing enter, the underlining above disappears. I have been having this problem on Windows with the latest version of LibreOffice, tried in Linux (GNOME Manjaro), but I have the same problem.

Anyone knows what is causing this to happen? Thanks

Smooth Scrolling

I'm surprised that neither LibreOffice nor OpenOffice has addressed the issue or implemented smooth scrolling in their documents. This flaw renders both word processing programs ineffective for my use. I apologize for the venting, but am I alone in this frustration? Perhaps I shouldn't be complaining since I don't know how to resolve it myself.

LibreOffice is having issues saving files.

LibreOffice is having issues saving files.

So, there's LibreOffice pre-installed on Ubuntu, and I decided to use that pre-installed software, on Ubuntu.

So, I open LibreOffice, and I select LibreOffice Draw. I make something, and then I go to save it.

But then, there's an issue. I can't save it, and an error message appears.

https://preview.redd.it/zlnoenlh0atc1.png?width=440&format=png&auto=webp&s=b39b19a7bdf67d283d58ce0f4ec168cd5d8a79be

So, I search up this issue on Google, and I see people posting about it on this forum, but the answers are about how to fix the issue on Windows and Mac, not on Ubuntu.

I look in /var/log/syslog for anything that occurred in LibreOffice when it was open and running, and I found the details. I'm not sure what it means, though.

Yeah, that's about it. I'm still trying to save the file.

Show Whitespace False condition not being saved?

I have my libreoffice currently updated, but no matter how I save the template with View>Whitespace off, it always resets when I open Libreoffice again.

I tried recording a macro to run on startup to solve this issue, but I get hit with a BASIC runtime error saying that CurrentController wasn't found

I found some resources online saying that it should have been as simple as saving a template with it off, do I need to toggle some setting beforehand or is this a bug?
