tips of visiting uwlax

Because the sub of uwlax is nearly dead, I try to ask here. I’m heading to UW-La Crosse to catch a sports game at the Recreational Eagle Center (REC). I’ll be staying at the Castle La Crosse Bed and Breakfast, which is my friends recommend. Since this is my first time visiting, I was wondering if anyone had recommendations for things to see, places to eat, or other experiences nearby that I shouldn’t miss.

If you have any favorite spots or tips for getting around, I’d love to hear them. Thanks in advance!

Bar food/burgers

Best place for some good Bar burgers either down town or south side? Also open to other recommendations aside from bar food

USPS

Anybody else having trouble with them? I was supposed to get a package today and it says was delivered in mailbox (it’s not) but it doesn’t even say the actual address of where it was delivered on site when you put in tracking number. They deliver my junk mail just fine but anything important they apparently leave wherever! I checked both apartment buildings where I am and nothing. And their costumer service online is absolute garbage.

Tattoos

Where is the best place to get a tattoo done in La Crosse? I've heard good and bad things about Mind Altering. This is going to be my first one, too.

I have what I want done, and I'm firm on it. I just need a place that isn't too dirty, and their techniques are trusted.

Can anyone explain why the property taxes in La Crosse are so high?

It seems like the average property tax in the lacrosse area is 4-5k for these dumpy old homes. How can the city justify this?

Leinenkugels Closing Brewery

https://www.weau.com/2024/11/08/56-workers-lose-jobs-when-leinenkugels-brewery-chippewa-falls-closes-january/

Perhaps a bit of stretch to put this in the La Crosse sub, but it hits close to home. Leinies sold out to MolsonCoors in 2016. It doesnt matter what reason the suits at MolsonCoors give for closing the brewery, I will always believe they're closing it because the union workers went on strike last year. I'm going to enjoy the last few Leinies in my fridge and those will be the Leinies I ever have.

no political question

i’m moving from IL and we had found the most amazing suburb where are neighbors were just amazing, school was great, etc. due to job relo i’m trying to find something with similar characteristics in lacrosse area.

we had a ton of police living in our suburb and correlated that with low fuckery (we have young children and i want my wife to feel comfortable going on a walk 24/7)

where is this place in lacrosse?

Man forces his way into our yard

Guy decided to come into our yard at 3:49am this morning. You can see he checks the lock, and then proceeds to forcibly open the gate. Really getting tired of dealing with this kind of behavior. This is the second time this has happened since we've lived in this home (less than a year).

Mamas in La Crosse! Running?

Any new mamas in La Crosse open to starting jogging group? I'm new to the area and I have a 3m old baby. I'm looking to start doing outdoor jogging with the stroller. To start maybe doing intervals... 4m walk, 1m jog. Things like that, potentially working up to like a 10k or so.

Let me know if you're interested or if groups like this already exist! Seems hard to find new mom friends around here.

Can someone explain to me, in as unbiased a way as possible, the differences between our state candidates (Pfaff, Klein, Johnson, and Oldenburg)?

I’m especially interested in their stances on climate and environment. So far I’ve really only been able to find statements on abortion and voting meaures. They don’t seem that different otherwise. Edit: I understand the difference between republicans amd democrats. I mean these candidates specifically. What makes them unique? And has either of them said anything about environment or climate? I know there are plenty of democrats that are fine with pollutimg companies and on the local level there are reublicans for conservation. If I wanted to vote based on party I wouldn’t be asking this question. Updated edit: Geez. Wasn’t expecting people to get pissed off and try to doxx me simply for asking a question. Some of you need to find something better to do on election day than troll people.

Live music in the area - we're blessed

I added eight videos to my Around Town playlist in YouTube. We're blessed to have access to awesome music in the area. I know I can't make to everyone, but when I do I take a memory video and post them for you and the artist. I hope you take a listen, I am already at 466 videos. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLTz1KRSfCDw5rplLUE0IgHT-tXiNC4ohb&si=Bh_wHJE-Jdb1yWK2

Political Watch Parties?

Anyone here going to be doing a get together for the election night? I would prefer to be more left leaning individuals but I am an open minded person who just wants to watch the election night with others passionate about politics too! I have to bartend but will be done around 9pm and I am GAME to stay up and enjoy the results both local and federal! Just don’t want to watch alone haha. Usually my family and I all get together but they don’t live in LaCrosse and I couldn’t go home due to work.

Anybody else messing with phone and email polls.

Do I really need ten flyers and calls per day from anonymously funded republican PACs telling me their opponent is the devil?

Even though I voted early in-person two weeks ago for a straight Democratic ticket, when pollsters call I always tell them that I will vote for the Republican candidate and immigration is the only topic I care about.

It might not change the world... but it does mean that Republican candidates have been slightly overrepresented in the polls by middle-aged white guys in western Wisconsin over the last couple of weeks.

Political calls

Has anybody else been getting their phone spammed by the Van Orden campaign, political calls the last like five days? I have got like four a day from random numbers. It’s been supper annoying since they leave voicemails now .

We’re killing it with the early voting

The poll worker today said 40% of registered voters had voted before they opened the doors this morning. City Hall wasn’t packed when I was there around 4:30 but it was pretty busy. Nice work, La Crosse. But remind your friends to vote!

Theres a guy walking around in the neighborhood between West and 16th, King and Main, writing stuff down in front of houses with democrat leaning signs

Hes an older guy, in a greenbay jacket with a hoodie. I confronted him in front of my house and he ran off yelling anti-trump stuff with lots of profanity. very over the top reaction, but I saw him milling around writing stuff in front of a couple neighbors homes before and after- all houses with Harris/Walz signs or pro-democrat messages.

Not saying this guy in particular is gonna be a problem but I think by now we have all heard about low information voters choosing violence against the 'evil liberals', just be on your toes out there and be safe.

Restaurants serving traditional Thanksgiving dinner?

My wife and I are planning to be in La Crosse for Thanksgiving with my parents. It's a small group this year so we'd like to go out instead of cooking.

Does anyone know of any restaurants in the area that plan on serving a traditional Thanksgiving dinner this year? Thank you.
