A vibrant community celebrating the essence of Kolkata, with a focus on content related to West Bengal or the Bengali community of India or abroad.

Kolkata is known for its literary, artistic, and revolutionary heritage; as the former capital of India, it was the birthplace of modern Indian literary and artistic thought. Kolkata has been called the "City of Furious, Creative Energy" as well as the "cultural capital of India". The city has a tradition of political graffiti depicting everything from outrageous slander to witty banter and limericks, caricatures, and propaganda.

NRI Bengalis, did you come back to Kolkata?

I am 31, grew up in a middle class family in north kolkata, left home to study in the States 6 years back. I currently live in Canada after spending 5 years in the US. I always had a 10 years plan to make money in the west and then come back to India for good. I work in tech. Although it is true that the more time you spend making homes in other countries the harder it gets to uproot and start again but I have already done this twice and still pretty keen on following the 10 years plan I had initially.

I want to know NRIs who are from Kolkata spent a decade or more studying and living abroad - did you come back to Kolkata particularly and could find good professional opportunities back in our city? I have worked 3.5 years in Kolkata before my MS and I still have anxiety thinking about the middle management and work culture specially in IT and I can’t get back to that. The work life balance or culture in India overall can never be at par with the west but Kolkata particularly has always been toxic and if you want to continue working with some top tech companies as I have lately the opportunities are limited. Or at least they were 6-8 years back. I can’t sugarcoat or be delusional for the sake of it no matter how much I love my city and growing up here.

I am contemplating a move in a couple of years and if I do really come back after spending a decade in far away countries I would like to be close to home. But I want to know by the time I come back with the experience and salary expectations I would have shall I just come back prepared mentally a move down south eventually or there are people who are happy with the pay/opportunities they got in Kolkata and are content with it to not move anywhere else within India? How much things have changed in terms of remote opportunities or the footprint with product based companies in Kolkata?

I know happiness and priorities would be subjective and to each their own but just open to experiences and feedback here particularly in the professional space for people who returned.

Is it wrong to drink or smoke on a day like Saraswati Puja?

I'm asking this because I live in a university away from Kolkata now and here nobody's celebrating this auspicious day, instead people are doing the usual 'Sunday Night' nonsense like smoking, drinking and clubbing. Coming from a traditional family I'm weirded out and feeling rather lonely. What are the ethics of this behaviour?

Cat neuter/spay

I have two cats, one male (10 months) and a new kitty female (2 months). I want them to be spayed and neutered. Could anyone suggest good animal clinic with minimum range to complete the surgery?

Need a small help from anyone that's visiting the Kolkata Book fair.

Greetings to everyone here. Kolkata International Book Fair is currently going on, I'm unfortunately not in the city anymore, and live in Vizag for my studies, thus sadly have to miss the fair once again this time. :(

Every year since my childhood pretty much, it has been a tradition of my brother and me, previously when my Mama was there, him and me to visit the book fair and he would gift me books of his choice or something that he knew I was interested in. Once he passed away, my brother took on that tradition and he gifted me books every year and signed the first page with his initials and "book fair DATE". Even after starting my studies, he would parcel to me but unfortunately this year he got into an accident on his bike which lead to some severe head injuries. Thankfully, he survived but is on a lengthy course of recovery.

Now, the help I'm requesting is that, somebody who's going to the book fair anytime, can they please get me two or three books, anything of your choice (novels, preferably english, I don't mind bengali tho) (depends on budget, as I'm a student and so can't bear the cost of expensive ones) and ship it to me, (with the lil tradition of signing it off with date and occasion) I would be really grateful to you. I will pay for the cost of the books and the shipping charges as well.

How do I start learning music?

I(20M) a college student, and recently, I've developed a deep fascination with music. It has become something I truly enjoy and appreciate on a whole new level.I like to analyse songs and even movie background scores. It's not that I have enjoyed all this throughout my life.Or even if I did it got overshadowed by academic stress.I want to become a music producer mainly. I want to learn musical instrument, vocals, and writing Since I'm just starting out, I’d love some guidance on how to begin —whether it's learning an instrument, getting into music production, or improving my songwriting skills. Please suggest what to do and how should I start

Can we seriously just stop chopping up whatever little patches of greenery the main cities have only to replace them with ugly cramped apartment complexes for once?

Like seriously, the only respite I get nowadays is that there is a PWD godown (at least that is what I think it is) right in front of my apartment window which has a fairly dense patch of trees and it gets visited by a fair number of bird species every now and then. Not to mention there are also the vast natural grasslands and marshes in the area around Amity-Aliah Universites which are all biodiversity hotspots and yet they will get replaced by big corporate buildings and whatnot in the coming years

Poetry open mics

Does anyone know where open mic events for poetry happen in the city? Where the audience is also good but not the kind of who just wanna have a beer and pass time.

Thanks in advance!
