We will go to Kiruna in a few weeks. We will not have a car, do you recommend a route or point near the cities (that can be walked) to better observe the auroras without the light?
I am visiting in early december.I have some winter clothes, but definitly not good enough for -20°c or -30°c.
So there's that meteorological phenomenon people keep talking about when it comes to Abisko, that makes it the best place to view the northern lights. Something about the clouds being dispersed by the high mountains near the village, giving you a clearer view of the sky even during bad weather.
Does anyone have any experiences with that phenomenon that can explain how it works better? Asking this because we've been hunting for auroras the past few days between Kiruna and Abisko and haven't been having much luck. We stationed at Abisko again last night, hoping for the famed "blue hole" to do its thing, but we managed to see nothing because of the weather despite insanely high KP (and had to drive back to Kiruna for an hour during the heavy snowstorm).
Could there be more specific conditions that make that phenomenon work that just weren't there yesterday, wind direction or how high the clouds are for example? Was it just bad luck? Tonight the weather is looking bad again and we don't even know if it's worth staking out at Abisko one more time hoping for the weather to miraculously clear like we're told it tends to do there.
Hi, hoping to visit Kiruna in 2 weeks. Saw the sky station is heavily advertised. Is it really worth it (in terms of enhanced aurora visibility) or is it more of a tourist trap. Trying to make the trip somewhat budget friendly which seems hard to begin with but the 90 euro pricetag for the visit seems a bit crazy considering it’s just taking a chairlift up a mountain and staying in a hut for a few hours. What are your local thoughts on this?
sorry if this is a dumb question i googled if there are polar bears in kiruna and apparently yes? is this true? i’m going soon and i just want to know. i mean i’ve never heard of anyone having an issue and the kiruna website says it’s not an issue, but i do want to walk around in the boreal forest and i want to know how safe that would be.
also is there snow end of november/ start of december?
thank you
Hello, I will be coming to kiruna in January and want to visit the Icehotel. I am free only on a sunday and want to visit the ice hotel in the morning and then take the 15:30pm train to abisko. Will I be able to take 501 bus on a sunday and reach on time to the railway station?
hello. i will be in kiruna next week, please help me with these questions:
-is ridesharing available? like bolt or uber? if yes, what app is available for Kiruna city? -where can i rent a car? should i rent something AWD or it s not necessary? -is there snow right now? how are the driving conditions? i plan to drive to abisko a few times
what activities do you recommend? is the weather appropiate for dogsled tours? (im staying between 20-25 nov)
i’m grateful for any advice (food or activities or tips) please, thank you!
I'm considering a job opportunity in Kiruna, Sweden, but I have concerns about the quality of life in such a remote location. Currently living in Munich, I enjoy its urban amenities - endless coffee shops, museums, and pleasant city walks through parks and streets. While Kiruna appears to lack these conveniences, I bet it can offer other things to make life fun. Hiking would be a common weekend activity as I already do this in the Alps.
I have several questions about daily life in Kiruna:
Hi! My partner and I have booked a trip to Kiruna in early November to try to see the Northern Lights (so excited!)
We have already booked our Northern Lights tour that takes us to Abisko National Park in the night too
We want to book a hike in Abisko National Park. We found some online, but those arebooked for our dates :( Are there any local tour companies we can ask? Or, if we want to go to Abisko National Park on our own from Kiruna, are there any public transport options?
Thank you!
Hej all, I am looking to get a snowmobile license this winter. Are there any courses held in English, and what's your best experience? Tack! 🍪
Hello!
Are there any open nightclubs, bars in kiruna?
Hej, any idea if there is a schedule to see when which house is moved? I missed the one this morning 😿
Hello, our mountain hike can’t continue due to bad weather. We have a flight from Kiruna on the 29th. What can we do from now until then in the area? Thanks for any tips.
Hi all, as the title says, I am planning to apply to the Masters in Spacecraft Design in LTU Kiruna campus and I had some questions regarding the program and city.
Although I have checked the program syllabus, I wanted to a personal opinion on the program from students who have already graduated. How easy/difficult did you find the program. Research and job opportunities during and after the program.
And how did non- EU students managed their expenses while in Kiruna. How expensive is Kiruna, and what kind of part-time job opportunities are available for the enrolled students.
Thank you to all the prospective repliers. I appreciate it.
Hello!! I’m on vacation in the city and heard about today the forecast for Auroras will be high.
Is anyone trying to see it tonight? Where are you going?
Hej.
(I’ll write in English too.
This subreddit used to be unmoderated and restricted, so no one could post. I just became a moderator and changed the settings so everyone can post again. Not ute if there is any interest in discussing Kiruna here, but wanted to give it a try and revive the subreddit. Welcome, and feel free to post here).
Hej!
But I am from a Pacific Island and have no Idea on how to dress for the cold. Any advice ? Or a shop address ? I'll go through Stockholm first to buy some clothing.
Im looking to do a husky sled excursion and hopefully catch the Northern Lights.
Or maybe just a Northern Lights tour.
There are a few companies that offer this service. Who would you recommend? What made your experience with this company so good?
Also,
What are the better places to photograph the Northern Lights around Kiruna if were so lucky to see them?
Thanks!
We ( my partner and I) are planning a trip to Kiruna this winter, and it will be our first time in Sweden. What are some things we should know before travelling? Thanks.
Hej!
Jag söker en festlokal i Kiruna för dryga 60 personer. Deltagarna kommer vara det innevarande kompaniet från lapplandsjägargruppen. Tack på förhand :)
Mvh
Currently studying in the south of Sweden but me and some friends are planning to make a trip to Kiruna.
What is a good and cheap place to stay for students in or around kiruna?
Hi. I've arrived in Kiruna for work and am thinking of going skiing on my free time. I've found a great website called Fritidsbanken that lend gear free of charge and they're also located in Kiruna, but if that doesn't workout I wanna ask where else can I rent skiing equipment and where can I buy clothes because skiing looks fun as hell so I suspect I'll be doing it quite a few times.
Also my mom suggested I get an instructor for an hour or two because it really helped her out a lot, so I'm wondering if I should get one or maybe join a group session since they're cheaper.
Thanks for any advice!
Hello,
I see only flight option from Kiruna to Stockholm on the date I want to travel, the departure is at 10:30 am. Unfortunately the SJ website shows a train only after noon and Abisko tourist website shows a bus that would reach at 10 am (which would still be late). Are there any other options for transport connecting Abisko to Kiruna airport?
Hej!
Hello! We are in Kiruna this weekend and unfortunately did not account for no busses this weekend, so we are having some trouble to visit the Icehotel on Saturday. We have Fridays and Sunday already booked with tours, but had Saturday for the Icehotel and exploring Kiruna.
I’ve tried the Sverigetaxi app, but this will cost 750kr one way to pre-book this trip (and it says no taxis available from Icehotel back to Kiruna).
If there is no affordable way (max. 400kr one way) to get there, if it safe to rent snowshoes and hike the Midnight Sun Trail?
