Veggies

I am on maintenance now and because I’m a small person (under 5’) and elderly I keep my carbs under 20 grams on most days. I have heard of folks who don’t count carbs in veggies. How would this work? Most of my carbs are from veggies and a little fruit. If I don’t count veggies, at what level should I keep my carbs? Hints from those who do this would be great 😊 THANKS!

In desperate search for stevia/erythrytol/monk fruit candy bars, sweets etc?

I've been shooting myself in the foot for months counting maltitol as half for net carbs only to find via youtube that it has very similar blood glucose response to table sugar.

For some reason 99% of the "keto" desserts use maltitol. Even when they say Stevia in front, on the back you can read it cointans stevia AND maltitol in unknown proporitons.......very sneaky

So, right now I'm searching from whatever candy bars, desserts, jelly bears there are available on the market with 100% either stevia or erythrytol or monk fruit or mix between them.

Initial weight loss when moving to keto maintenance from a moderate carb maintenance diet?

Hi,

Never considered keto before. For various reasons, I want to experiment while England is in lockdown over the next month.

I'm currently eating at maintenance and lifting (going to have to transition to home workouts) a fairly normal diet that keeps my weight stable - 150g protein, 70g fat, the rest carbs.

Been aware of keto for a while but a lot of what I've read is on keto in a deficit to lose weight.

I'm shooting for maintenance, but I'm aware of the initial 'whoosh' of weight loss when moving to keto from glycogen depletion, lower volume of food, less carbs.

What should I expect in terms of weightloss from this effect in the first couple of weeks? (I don't want to panic at the scale dropping 8-10lbs and increase my calories past maintenance - having maintained my weight for quite a while.)

Thanks.

Update for anyone finding this thread in future: I've dropped 5lbs over the last three days.

Covid and maintenance gain

It’s really happened. I’ve gained weight. It’s been 3 years since I started keto. I lost around 80 lbs and have been in maintenance for about a year. When I first started weighing a little more than at my lowest, I put it down to water retention, normal fluctuation but I have to face facts. I’ve put on about 8 lbs and it’s time to get back at it before I grow out of all my new clothes. But I’m hungry. So hungry. I’m short 5’1 and am 50 and just starting perimenopause. If I want to eat at a 20% deficit, I’ll be eating only 1057 calories a day and it just feels like not enough. Does anybody have any suggestions? Encouragement? Shared experiences?

Staying keto with a messed up supply chain

I've been eating semi-serious keto for a year and a half now. Managed to lose 80 lbs over that time. Did so through a combination of keto, but also being unemployed, broke, and "fasting".

Now it sounds like one of the cornerstones of my diet -- MEAT -- will be going into a period of scarcity and high price. I'm in southern Ontario, and there has been precisely zero talk of trying to set up long-term local production/processing of food. That is, setting up more widely distributed production/processing, so everything doesn't immediately shut down if a few big centers close, or a border closes, or fuel for transport makes cross-country shipping prohibitive.

So likely for the next few months, maybe the next year, there will be... little to no meat for me. And who knows, this will probably extend to eggs and dairy eventually too.

And that's not getting into the "nice" keto stuff I sometimes eat -- almonds and avocados. I've been told that stuff primarily comes up from the US. If that supply chain breaks down, then I guess I won't have those nice things either.

So I'm looking at a possible future where my bare-bones cheese and meat diet is no longer feasible. At that point, I pretty much have to abandon keto, right? Get back into those cheap abundant carbs from rice and 'tatoes? Is there a future where I can stay keto in the Covid economy?

Maintainenance during self isolation

I’m on self isolation and working at home right now. My loving partner has been doing the shopping with me in my mind. Boy, trying to maintain my weight when I’m working 12 feet from my refrigerator is a challenge. And for some reason, I’m starving ALL the time. I never ate breakfast when I left the house at 8 am but now I can’t make it past 10 am without breakfast. Snacks, within reach, mean eating constantly. I’m staying keto but I’m going to balloon if I don’t get this calorie thing under control. Any tips for resisting? Why am I so darn hungry?

Maintenance led to weight gain. Back on track.

I lost 80 lbs in 2 years, slow but steady. But I never was able to establish a goal weight.

At @125 (I’m 5’1” and 50 y.o), I started getting very hungry all the time and it was suggested I maintain for a while and not try to eat at a deficit. I stopped tracking (although after 2 years I was comfortable that my macros were pretty good although I was going up to about 30 NC).

However I was very hungry all the time and I ate a lot. Although my weight naturally fluctuates a lot, it became clear that I was actually gaining. My lowest was just under 124 and I was hovering around 128-130 about a month ago. And I was unhappy. It scared me.

I started tracking again and eating at a slight deficit. And guess what! I’m at 124.4lbs today. And I haven’t been starving myself. I’m sure some of it was water weight from going up a bit in carbs but I think I’ve lost the real weight I gained. What’s more I think I may have fixed my metabolism to a degree. I’m no longer starving all the time and I may lose another couple of pounds to give me some wriggle room.

It’s official: I’ve gained weight doing maintenance

I was very fearful about the maintenance phase however I decided to trust my body and listen to my appetite while remaining keto. It didn’t work. At my lowest I was a little below 125. Now I’m hovering somewhere between 128 and 130. I’ve decided I have to rein it in. I’m tracking again. I’m trying to keep my calories low. And I’m trying to accept that I will likely have to track for the rest of my life. Why can’t I trust my appetite? Why am I gaining weight even though I don’t feel I’m overeating? Why do I have to be hungry. Ugh.

Gaining. Help

I’ve been in maintenance for a few months and sadly I’m gaining, slowly but surely. This was my fear. I stopped trying to lose because I was hungry all of the time and so now I’m eating to satiety. Apparently, I’m not supposed to feel full.

I guess I’m going to start tracking again and try to stay low on my calories. I’ve also decided to fully resist any snacking as I thinking having treats after dinner may be responsible.

I’m feeling discouraged right now as I’m starting to thinking tracking and dieting will be something I have to do for the rest of my life. I had hoped that keto would “fix” my crazy metabolism to a degree.

Anybody have any suggestions or shared experiences?

Trouble with MCT Oil out of nowhere

I've been doing bulletproof coffee with MCT oil for over a year now (at LEAST a year) with no problems, I would just squirt some in, blend it up with my butter and heavy cream, down it as quick as I can and I'm out the door, probably between 1 and 2 tablespoons. about two weeks ago my stomach decided it just didn't like MCT oil anymore. I've been using this bottle since the beginning of November now with no problems so I don't think it's the product itself. We went out one night and I had two, count em TWO miller lights, got queasy, next morning was the start, my stomach said no more and up came the MCT with everything else.

Now I'm doing a measured out teaspoon and I have to drink it VERY slowly, every few gulps I start getting that fun queasy feeling again, wait till it subsides, then a few more gulps.

Anyone have anything similar happen to them? I'm trying to ease my way back in to it, but I want to know why this happened in the first place. I know the medium chain triglycerides are not easy on the stomach in the first place but I was under the impression you got your body used to them and then you were fine. What would make someone's body just decide it doesn't like something like MCT oil anymore?

Just Got Down to My Goal Weight this Weekend. Want to hear what successful people on maintanance do.

I started my weight loss journey 6 months ago when I decided to try keto. I fell in love and then st as red studying it like crazy and started implementing fasting into my weight loss plan. 6 months later I went from 290 to 200.

My goal now is to maintain while doing some body recomposition through lifting. I just want to hear peoples strategies for maintanance from those who have been successful. I am in uncharted territory and would like to get as much wisdom from people who have been there as possible.

Finding maintenance so terrifying

I’ve been maintaining or trying to for perhaps 4 months now. Maintenance now consists of not tracking/lazy keto and essentially eating to satiation. I gained a little off the hop. I’m perhaps a pound and a half over what I was at my very lowest. But my weight fluctuates a lot more because of water weight if I eat a few more carbs. Sometimes it’s up 5 pounds. But I’m scared and paranoid all the time. I can’t tell if I’m slowly gaining or staying relatively steady. I can’t tell how much I need to eat to maintain. I can’t tell if the few extra carbs are knocking me out of ketosis. The weight loss was the easy part. Now I’m so at sea. Does anyone have any suggestions? I’m a woman so I have a low weight day or two a month so only weighing once a week could have me weighing at my heaviest and in a tailspin.

A real milestone

I’ve been maintaining for a few months now at around 125 lbs - I’m 5’1. I may decide to lose a little more at some point but at 50 I think a little padding is not such a bad thing. I recently bought my first dressed up outfits since hitting my goal weight. I’d purchased new suits for work but nothing for a special night out. I bought the same dress in 2 different colours - cheap and cheerful really but stylish. And I wore one out last night. And I felt, for the first time in maybe 15 years, like a million bucks. And more importantly, I felt like me. I realize that I have been wearing clothes that flatter my figure but bear no relationship to how I see myself for almost 2 decades. Fat lady clothes. Last night I dressed like me and felt pretty and comfortable and easy in my skin. It’s seems trivial but it was profound. I feel like I’ve been wearing a middle aged fat lady costume forever and I’ve finally been able to take it off.

Maintaining 125 is a struggle...

To maintain 125, did you find it necessary to fast or eat omad?

Note, I gained back 15lbs after reaching goal weight. So I'm actually now back to weight loss mode lol

Thinking of taking a week off.

I have an unexpected holiday coming up. I’ll be spending a week in Mexico City. I’ve been keto for more than 2 years and maintenance for a couple of months. If I eat carbs and sugar am I likely to feel really sick? I’ve never cheated so I’m unsure what to expect.

Zeroodles have changed my life

I’ve been doing keto for over 2 years and have lost 80 lbs. I’m in maintenance now. I tried shiritaki noodles once and have not had the courage to try them again. I more or less resigned myself to a future without pasta. And then I tried Zeroodles soybean fettuccine last night and my mind is blown. They had been in my cupboard for months because I thought a 1/4 package at 5 net carbs would be hardly worth it in terms of portion size. As it turns out, 1/4 package is a very generous serving and the noodles themselves are amazing. They really are. My daughter says they remind her most of fresh/homemade pasta. Pasta is back. Tonight-carbonara!

Weight Maintenance is hard

To expand on the info in my Flair: my highest weight ever was 204, and my lowest weight recently was 124. So, lost 80 pounds "lifetime", lost 33 pounds via keto in the past year and a half.

Although I understand that I must maintain new eating habits that I learned while losing weight on keto, I want to allow myself to eat too many carbs and eat too many calories, and I have been though I know I shouldn't.

Since starting maintenance I've been up and down, and as high as 130. Those higher pounds feel so uncomfortable !!

I'm believing that I won't be one of the people who "gains it all back", but I'm struggling to keep a strong mental attitude and strong habits to stop myself from returning to old ways of over-eating foods that will cause weight gain.

Should i go back to 3 meals a day?

Well everything was fine for while then 1 stalled at around 275. went to mad and dropped to 262 now i've been there for a while (3 weeks) Should I go back to eating less more often (basically what i'm eating now just spread out) or is there something i can do to nudge it over. I'm definitely running calorie light hitting between 1500 and 1700 a day at 262 pounds i should still be negative right?
