Pedal Kayak Suggestions

Hello! I am looking to upgrade my boat in 2025 and am specifically interested in a pedal drive one. I currently have something very basic and entry level my husband got as a gift.

However, I am not interested in fishing. I mean, I would like to, but I’m not really looking for a fishing kayak. I do not need something that I need to be able to stand on and cast a line or anything like that.

I mostly am interested in pedal drive to work out my legs and get some extra cardio in, but also for when I want to bring my camera kit along and do some birding trips. I figured it would be kinda nice to be able to not worry about paddles when I’m trying to shoot, if that makes sense.

For context, I live on the eastern shore of Maryland and would be mainly taking it out in small bays and rivers. Pretty calm waters. So looking for something basic, but everything I see online are super sweet fishing ones.

No budget in mind, but would like to stay under 2k if possible, because again, the point isn’t fishing. I am keeping an eye on FB marketplace.

TIA yak friends!

Is the Ascend 12T much better than the Ascend 10T?

TL;DR - I’m deciding between an Ascend 10T and 12T. I know the 12 is better on the water but is it THAT much better?

I’m 6’3, 220, my dog is 70 pounds and we’ve been squeezing into an Ascend D10. I want to get a sit-on-top so he’ll have more room. Otherwise I really like the D10 for seat comfort and the ride in the water, it has been a great cheap kayak, so I have a bias to stay with the Ascend brand.

We’ll fit on the 10T, but are we too heavy? The 12T doesn’t cost much more... Is it simply 2 feet longer and a little more buoyant, or is it better in other ways?

I’m going float around a small lake with him, drink beer, paddle slowly, float. The most important part is being comfortable for a couple hours. I’ll have to carry the kayak about 100 feet by myself. The 10 footer is more practical for transport and storage, but I’m willing to deal with the 12 footer if it’s a noticeable improvement on the water.

A good Kayak for a beginner?

Hi guys,

I am looking to get my first kayak, as I only have a motorcycle then it has to be inflatable to be able to transport it.

I have narrowed down my selection to 3 options
Intex Challenger K2
ExcursionPro K2
Sevylor adventure kayak kit

I am looking to use it just to paddle along the coast on calm days in the sea (in Alicante region, Spain).

I would have gone with Challenger K2 as it has a best price and its not that heavy but not sure whether this can even used at sea at all in any conditions so I thought Ill just ask before commiting to buy.

Kayaking must haves?

Looking for gift ideas for my dad who recently started getting into kayaking. He currently has a fishing kayak but hasn’t taken it fishing yet, mostly just done group kayak outings. The last one he went on, I went with him and he bought himself a dry bag from a fundraiser. What else should I consider getting him? My budget is around 100 bucks

Kayak for a tall guy in amsterdam

I'm 1m93 (6ft4) and I weigh 115kg (250lbs) and I live in Amsterdam on a houseboat in centre amsterdam, so I really want a kayak as a kind of wake up ritual. I have kayaked plenty before so I know for a fact I like it.

I'm am a student tho, so I can't spend TOO much. I have a budget of around €800 tops. I really don't want want an inflatable one, but ideally one with a compartment for my phone and such. Do you guys have any recommendations or am I out of my mind?

Correct transport

I just bought a second hand tandem kayak today, strapped it from every direction and not entirely sure if this is bad or not.

Without destroying me could I please get some advice? Upside or face up? Should I strap front as well?

Are my cross bars sufficiently spaced?

I need a roof option!

New car (RAV4 xle 2024 hybrid) and it’s too tall to slide my 16’ Eddyline up the back like I did with my Forester. I’d like to get a hullivator and I need advice. Where did you buy it? Did you install it yourself? Did you keep the stock roof racks? Any other information?

Kayak wagon damaged

The „stand“ of my kayak wagon got bent because of driving down a rock. As seen in the picture. Unfortunately it is made of aluminum. What technique do I have to apply to get it straight? Do I have to heat it up with a blow torch? I don’t want to weaken or break the aluminum when straightening it.

Inflatable Kayak?

Long story short: I may be selling my existing kayak (Lifetime brand) to a buddy of mine and getting an upgrade and was wondering whether inflatable kayaks were any good compared to their plastic brothers. The only reason I was contemplating an inflatable kayak is because I have a sedan with no roof rack and the couple of times I've had my current kayak out, It's been a hassle to get it ontop of my car. It would only be used for recreational use (lakes, creeks and the river) during the warmer months.

Aside from the compact nature of them, what are the pros/cons of inflatable vs hard plastic kayaks?

Point 65 Tequila Kayak Repair/Tips

Hello Kayakers out here. If this was duplicated please forgive me I am new here and as a whole rarely post on reddit to begin with.

I purchased a used Point 65 tandem Kayak Tequila v.1 recently very cheap. Yes, please dont give me the reason why not to buy one its already done. I bought it for its portability as I dont like putting anything on my roof.

As a solo kayak it functions perfect and does not leak how ever the mid section ie tandem add on has a serious leak in the connection area. My guess by the discoloration at the bottom of the entire kayak this was left outside in the sun for years thus compromising the plastic/polyethylene structural integrity (UV?).

Does anybody here have any tips on how to mend the hairline crack in the photo? I know about plastic welding but is this an area that I might be better strengthened with the addition of hot staples?

I cannot find a shop in S Florida to do the work so I am on my own. Id hate to toss this piece out and would rather salvage it. Any tips would greatly be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Turning 40!!!! Help / Advice, Please..

Hello,

It is my 40th birthday next year and myself and a small group (4 in total) plan on a european kayaking trip.

I have considered Sweden, and a 4 day self-guided trip in the Stockholm archipelago.

I have found a tour company and they also offer a guided trip.

However, I'm looking for other european suggestions of places to kayak. Rivers, lake, sea, etc (Not white water).

Ideally it would be nice to paddle somewhere beautiful / interesting in the days, and in the evenings not to be completely in the middle of knowhere!?.. So somewhere other people may be gathering, places to grab a meal or have a few birthday beers. Even if it means a taxi in-land.

On the Swedish tour we'd pretty much be on remote islands wild camping. Which would be fine for part of the trip.

If people have done kayaking over a few days in europe, I'd be very interested to hear about it and see if it's an option.

Or any other suggestions, Thank you.

Kayaking beginner, looking for tips, gear suggestions and good locations in San Diego

Hi y’all, a while ago I visited my sister in Washington and stayed at a lake house that had a kayak available to use and I spent the majority of the 4 days there paddling around the lake and I loved it far more than I thought I would, I think about it all the time. Recently I’ve been wanting to pick up an active hobby that I really enjoy that’s gets me up early and gets me outdoors, especially now that I’m sober I want to get out and do something regularly that’s really fun that can be my thing. Recently I got a Subaru Crosstrek that has cross bars on top so now I have a mode of transport for a kayak and ready to put in a decent amount of money into it. Sorry for the long winded story but I’ve wanted to get into it fully for a while so I’m excited. Im by no means rolling in money but I’m perfectly happy to put a decent amount of money towards kayaking, so could anyone recommend some good beginner kayaks that correspond to the type of areas I can paddle around in San Diego? Also inform me of regular spots out here that I can rise early and get out on the water. Looking for recommendations on kayaks, related helpful gear, good mounts for my car and anything else you can think of! Thanks guys!

Cold water kayaking

I want to get into cold water kayaking. I would be kayaking the Cuyahoga river i understand the dangers with cold water. I know the river and live a stones throw away from the river. I would love to know information on how i can safely do this before ever attempting. Obviously need a dry suit and definitely would love recommendations. This is something i definitely want to do to push myself and it seems pretty bad ass if you do it correctly and responsibly. I’m willing to spend good money on goooood GOOD gear. Definitely would not attempt without it.

Pls don’t try and talk me out of it as this is a dream of mine as “stupid” as it sounds. I understand you have 3-30 minutes before I become past tense from exposure. Again i would never attempt this with out the PROPER gear. I know that section of the river like the back of my hand, i also worked for a kayak rental company on the river.

Any tips/gear recommendations/knowledge is welcomed. Even if you want to try and talk me out of this it’s welcomed too but i wouldn’t lose sleep over trying to convince me otherwise. I’d love to be able to do it properly and safely.

This isn’t something i HAVE to do this year so prepping for next year is a better option.

Thank you in advance and thanks for reading.

Complete beginner recommendations - Australia

Hi!! I'm looking at getting into kayaking and would appreciate any recommendations of kayaks to look into.

  • I am female, 5'7", and 158 pounds. I am relatively fit, but can get lower back pain.
  • I live on an island, and would be launching from here. We are surrounded by other larger islands and so rarely get waves.
  • I would be doing some kayaking alone, but only small trips.
  • budget is flexible

I live a fair distance away from kayaking stores, so trying them out first would be difficult, I'm happy for second hand too. Please let me know if there is anything I have missed. Thanks for your help!

What is the lowest water temperature you’re comfortable kayaking in without a wetsuit or dry suit

I’m really wanting to get out on the water but don’t want to invest in a wetsuit or dry suit, wondering if I can still get away with it. How do you guys handle that?

Renter friendly storage hacks?

Hi everyone! We have a finished garage in the rental we live in and we’re struggling with space in our garage. In our last home we had an unfinished garage and my husband installed some J bars? on the wall and we hung them.

Ideally we’d love to free up some floor space without drilling a whole ton into the walls.

Mounting Motor Guide IX3 on Bonafide SKF 117

Looking at purchasing a used Motor Guide IX3 for my SKF 117. Wondering if anyone has any experience mounting one on that kayak. I would like to mount it on the stern because I primarily fly fish and don't want the motor in the way. Any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
