Best retail landlord and location?

Hi I am considering opening a shop for some cannibus cosmetics and stuff. Anything I should consider and which location is best around Jozi for a good market, considering accessibility to mostly middle class employed people who are into wellness and organic stuff.

In terms of property management companies which ones would you recommend and why?

Thank you.

Shosholoza Meyl

I'm thinking of taking the shosholoza meyl to Cape Town from Johannesburg. I also want to use the car transport service. I've read some Google reviews, but it's inconclusive on whether the service is reliable or not.

It will be myself and my 5y.o kid and I would like to know if the train service is worthwhile. If I was travelling alone, I would wing it but having a kid who could get bored (if the train gets stuck for a few hours) is a game changer.

I would like to know if anyone has used the service recently (last 6 months) and if it is recommended or not.

My alternate plan is just to drive to CT and have a night stop over about 6 hours on the way.

Is it legal?

Hi everyone, Hope everyone is doing well this weekend. I just want to find out from any lawyers out there. Is it legal for a landlord when you move in to put you on geyser rations and stipulate that you can only shower in the evenings from 6pm and refuse to put it on any other time of the day? She has the switch for the geyser on her side, it’s not in my little cottage. Is it also legal for her to make me pay for the plumber to install the washing machine when she said that she would pay when I came to look at the place but nothing was put into writing? Is it also okay for her to shout at me, belittle me and call me rude because I don’t want people to come into my home when I’m not there? I moved in yesterday and am in desperate need of some help.

Activities in the evening?

Hello guys, what are you usually doing in the evening/night? Almost all the recommendations that I can find on internet sites, for Johannesburg, are day time activities.

I was at a Jazz Event that was cool. Apparently there is a light show on the evening in the zoo that I want to check out.

But what else besides dining and clubbing? I thought about going to the theatre but the showings are (surprise !!🤣) at daytime.

It almost feels like the only advice is "barricade yourself at home and wait for the sun to come out" 🤣🤣🤣

Seeking Access to Wits University Digital Archives for Raymond Dart Photographs

Hi everyone, I'm a researcher currently working on a project about Professor Raymond Dart. I've learned that the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) holds digital archives that include original photographs of him, but I've been unable to access these materials. Does anyone have experience with Wits' digital repositories or know which department or individual I should contact to request access? Any guidance or advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! Matteus

City Power Disconnection Scam

I just received a whatsapp message that said my electricity is going to be disconnected in two hours due to arrears on my municipal account. I know this is impossible because my account is paid up in advance. I've gone through tough times in the past and suffered disconnections as a result. That is why, now that I am able to, I always ensure the account is always in credit.
I phoned City Power and they confirmed the scam. I reported the number and requested an investigation. Don't know if anything will come of it but at least they've been made aware of the scam.

Be safe and vigilant.

Where can I Rollerskate?

Hi everyone, I’m recently started rollerskating again and have been looking for places to skate outside of the usual rinks. I tried to skate at an estate near where I stay and promptly ate dirt after encountering a hill. Anyone know somewhere that has smooth roads and is semi-quiet?

Anybody got a Black Friday Biltong special?

Sad to say that there is a distinct lack of butchery/meat related Black Friday specials this year. Anybody have a local butcher running a biltong special? (No food lovers doesn’t count)

Green Day Calabash Tickets

Hey hey! This is a bit of a hail Mary on my part, but I'm looking for a single ticket in Front Zone Standing for the Joburg leg of the Green Day & The Offspring Calabash show; and was hoping someone here would have any leads.

I was in a bit of a financial fix when tickets originally went on sale, and this is a bucket list concert for me so I'm really trying to find a way there!

Where to live? Berlin to Jozi for 3 months

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for advice on where to live in Johannesburg for a short-term stay of around three months. My partner and I currently live in Berlin, but I’m originally from Rusty Dusty, South Africa. We usually visit Cape Town when we're back, but this time we’re looking at Joburg since it’s closer to family.

We’re hoping to find a neighborhood that fits the following criteria:

  • Budget: Ideally under R23k/month.
  • Lifestyle: Walkable area with access to good restaurants, art galleries, and coffee shops.
  • Family-friendly: We have a 2-year-old, so it would be great to have a nearby playground or safe green space to enjoy with her.

From what I’ve read so far, areas like Bryanston, Melville, Linden, and Parkhurst keep coming up. Here's my understanding of each, but I’d love more input:

  • Bryanston: Seems great for families but feels more car-dependent.
  • Melville: Love the artsy vibe and walkable cafes, but I’m a bit unsure about safety.
  • Linden: Quiet and community-oriented, with good food options.
  • Parkhurst: Trendy and walkable, with a good mix of dining and kid-friendly spots.

We briefly stayed in Rosebank before, and while I liked the convenience, it felt a bit too mall-centric for us, and I wasn’t sure how much more there was to explore in the immediate area.

Any insights, suggestions, or even leads on monthly rental options would be super helpful. Thank you in advance!

Christmas lunch

My parents will be spending Christmas alone this year as my husband and I will be visiting family in another part of the country. I want to book a really nice Christmas lunch / brunch for them. Voucher, Buffet or set menu, doesn't really matter. Please recommend somewhere that will be open on Christmas day and will have good food. Thanks in advance!

Johannesburg public transport

Hi fellow Joburgers,

Can anyone please help me with the metro bus route from Rosebank to Maboneng or surrounding areas (Gandhi Square)? What's the estimated fare? Also, what's the return route from Maboneng/Gandhi Square to Rosebank?

Are there other options as well (gaubus, taxis etc) and how are they in comparison to the metrobus?

Thanks in advance!

Rage Expo

My friends and I are going to Rage Expo for the first time this weekend, and we were wondering about arrival time, how full it gets etc. Can anyone who has been before give us some advice? We're not going for anything specific, and really just want to loop the place at least once and then probably go home. Doors open at 9am on Saturday morning. What are the lines to get in generally like? If we arrive at 8:30, would that be early enough to not be in too much of a queue?

Also anything you know of that is a must see, let me know.

Thanks all, 36 years old and actually quite amped to finally be attending one of these. My older brother played in the Battlefield 2 LAN like 20+ years ago and I've wanted to go ever since. If you're going and see a tall dude with a beard wearing a cap, say whatsup, it might be me!

The Ultimate Joburg Restaurant Guide (For Everyone Not Beach-Bound This December)

Let's talk about why Joburg's food scene beats overpriced coastal smoothie bowls any day. Sure, we could list the fancy spots with their fancy views, but let's dig into the real gems that make this concrete jungle worth every bite.

Starting Strong: Bismillah in Fordsburg - The kind of place where butter chicken bunny chows at 2 AM solve problems you didn't even know you had. The spice scale here isn't a question, it's a lifestyle choice. When your mouth is on fire and your wallet is still surprisingly full, you know you're home.

For the Meat Masters: The Local Grill, Parktown North - These people treat beef with the kind of respect usually reserved for visiting royalty. They'll tell you everything about your steak except its social security number. The passion is real, and so is the quality. Just don't mention well-done steak unless you enjoy watching chefs cry.

View Goals: Marble, Rosebank - Yes, it's extra. Yes, it's expensive. But sometimes you need that fancy night out where the food looks like art and tastes even better. The view reminds you why you love this city, even with its quirks.

But here's the real question - where are YOUR go-to spots?

Drop your top 3 restaurants that make staying in Joburg this December worth it. Maybe it's that hidden Asian spot in Cyrildene, the family-run Italian place that hasn't changed their recipes since the 80s, or that Portuguese spot where they know your name and your order.

Looking for:

  • Hidden gems that tourists haven't found yet
  • Places worth the splurge
  • Those perfectly reliable neighborhood spots
  • Any cuisine that makes you forget about beach views

Help create the ultimate December restaurant guide for everyone choosing Joburg's thunder over Cape Town's waves.
