Saw this little fella while spraying their enclosure. I’ve only ever seen pics of iridovirus on common wild species, never on ones like this, so I can’t tell if he’s just less brown than the others or if he caught iridovirus somehow…?
I'm looking at the substrates available from Josh's Frogs and am confused. They offer one for isopods and one for isopods and millipedes. Does anyone know what the difference between them is?
Hello!! I have always been a fan of isopods (as a kid I was terrible to take on walks cause I would stop and make sure the bugs ended up in the bushes so no one would step on them) and would like to know more about the each species and what would make each one special and where they come from. I would also like to know the evolutionary history of isopods. If anyone has any recommendations for media which could answer my questions or would like to info dump on me in the comments, your knowledge would be greatly appreciated!!
This poor little guy's molt got stuck yesterday. The back half came off fine, but the front part is still stuck on in pieces. His two front legs don't really seem to work, but the other ones are fine.
Is he okay to keep going? 😟
My armadillidium vulgare youth specifically have been escaping and i can't figure out why. I keep all my pods in plastic drawers, so they are open containers. However, the sides are tall and slippery enough that they don't typically escape. I carefully monitor the height and placement of things within the containers to make sure there aren't clear escape routes, and I've been keeping them for years without problems.
Recently, though, I've noticed a continuous flow of escapees that are specifically young armadillidium vulgare. Quite a few I've found dead in close proximity to their containers, rarely i find them randomly strewn around the house dead or alive, and about half the times I water them, I find lone stragglers in the laevis bin directly below them. At first, I wondered if it was because they were climbing up on a thin layer of dirt accumulated on the sides, so I wiped it away, but they continued to be found outside of their home. I also checked for cracks or holes and found none.
Does anyone have any idea why or how they're getting out, and why it's only small young ones of this species?
Hi everyone! I am not well versed in the isopod world, and i only have them for bioactive enclosures. long story short i have snake mites and need to discard all of my enclosures and start over. i was wanting to save the isopods, but i dont think this is a good idea as they could be harboring live mites or mite eggs. can someone please help me? my second thought was to just dump the cages into my woods but i know that is environmentally irresponsible. so how do i humanely unalive the isopods in my bioactive tanks? or should i just put everything in a garbage bag and take it to the dump and let them live there? ik they are bugs but they are my cute friends who eat snake poop and i feel terrible about this:( pic of my girl for attention
I'm pretty new to isopods and have noticed that my yellow zebras, that are in a planted tank, seem to love being high up. They are constantly on the top of a plant or up the walls of the tanks. My dairy cows and pandas are rarely out in the open. Is this common for yellow zebras?
Is this a good enclosure for dairy cow isopods?
My isopods aren’t even here yet, but i’m having trouble because my tank is reading at 87% humidity and 67 degrees, but the I’m getting american magic potion isopods and i’ve read the suggested levels are around 50-60% humidity and 70-80 degrees.
I’ve thought about getting a tank heater, but all I can find are for reptiles and that’s way too hot. I’ve also tried to dry off the substrate more but it’s not changed the humidity. I don’t want to shock the buggies when they get here so I was just wondering if anyone had any tips! Thanks in advance!!!
My friend want to start his own isopod colony, but his Brother is allergic to all that's crustacean, wich isopods are a part of. Are the isopods potentially gonna trigger the brother's allergy or Will it be relatively safe?
I have a colony of all Dairy Cow isopods that reproduced like crazy and now I have fully brown isopods scurrying around. I assume there was one or more brown ones amongst the Dairy Cows I purchased that helped produce these but is there any other explanation? Something to do with genetics maybe? I don’t have any pictures of them at this time but can provide them later if needed.
Jupiters are experts at hide and seek, they can become ALMOST invisible.
I'm getting Shiros, and I need substrate. I have a 10ish gallon aquarium I'm using, and am also wondering if I should put a layer of clay at the bottom for holding moisture. What substrate should I use? I hear people mix stuff, but I don't know if I have time... What should I do?
I enjoy looking around iNaturalist to see if I can identify any new or uncommon species of isopods and I came across this little beauty in Kenya (link below). At first I thought it had iridiovirus, but I compared it with other isopod species I have seen with iridiovirus, and it might just be the lighting, but that doesn't look like iridiovirus to me. The blue is too deep and you can still make out the other colours. Iridiovirus usually has a more neon-ish bue colour.

i’ll attach a couple pics in the comments that show it off a tiny bit better, but i noticed this guy today. no antenna, weird legs, odd walking pattern. is there anything that can help, will it pass naturally, can a molt help, or do i need to ethically euthanize?
Moved everyone out the the wild caught container into there own little boxes. Laid off the food to try not to encourage pests for a few weeks. First time i’ve seen them come out and eat what I’ve added extra! He’s taking a little piece of shrimp with him back to his hidey hole 🕳️
Hi! I got springtails for my hissing cockroach tank and some of these isopods were mixed in. I decided to separate some and start a little colony. Could anyone identify the species? Thank you!
