I started to get into Audax events this year and I'm planning to do a 1500km event next year. I definitely need to upgrade my front light for the longer rides, what do you guys recommend?
My wife and I are visiting Dublin in mid-December. I'm thinking about renting a bike and trek either up to Skerries or down to Bray and back. I know it'll probably be chilly and dreary, but hoping I can warm up in a handful of cafes along the way - along with plenty of layers. I'm curious if anyone has recommendations or tips as far as routes or stops to make.
Thanks!
Hi all, myself and a friend have recently got into cycling over the past few months and want to cycle from Mizen Head to Malin Head in August 2025.
I'm wondering if anyone here would have any good recommendations on routes? We're both from Cork and have a fairly decent idea of how we THINK we should attack it but would like to hear from anyone with experience.
We're looking to get it done in ten days so we can enjoy ourselves a bit (pints) on the way.
Very much an open book on this - we are still arguing over camping vs. booking accomodation so any thoughts on that would be great too.
Equally, if anyone just has a few links to things we might find useful that would be great.
We're both probably going to be on Merida bikes (I'm currently on a Carrera Subway e-Bike which I love but the headache of charging it etc has me put off using it.)
Thanks everyone! Any and all information or feedback is very much appreciated!
Hello Friends!
I'm from the United States and in my 30s. I just booked a trip to Ireland in Mid-May for a trip for about 8 days and flying into Dublin. I plan on bringing my gravel bike and would love to do a 3-to-4-day bike ride, mid-way staying at a facility for a proper shower but using a bivy otherwise. I intend on spending the last couple days at a hotel back in/near Dublin.
Question: Any suggestions on possible routes?
For Context: I'd rather see the countryside, small pubs, and local chats instead of a tourist hell, this is why I picked an off season. I also rode 3,219KM in 2023, so I'm capable of moderate non-casual cycling.
Shimano Di2 help
So I have a giant propel advanced 0 from 2017. It has Ultegra di2 6870 version and the hangar and rear derailleur came off. So I’m not sure how much damage is done to the derailleur as I have to take the chain off and then I have seen those parts are discontinued.
Can a R8050 derailleur from new version work with my current shifters and front derailleur?
Unfortunately had my first proper incident with a driver being aggressive towards me for cycling.
First trying to over take on the right to turn left while also shouting verbal abuse. I get I'm fat hence I'm trying to exercise but no need to roar it out of your car window while trying to run me off the road.
The second when I see him later on when I tell him I was reporting the issue. Got out of his car and started threatening me. Unfortunately a bit rattled so couldn't clarify for the Garda if he threatened to kill me or just threatened to assault with the latter being more of a non issue and at most bring a public order issue.(I do hate the public order act)
I feel like if I had a small go pro style camera on, I'd be in a much better position in regard my statement.
So yeah note to myself and anyone else to keep a small camera on when dealing with undesirables just so there's a clear statement than can be made. Even if it is to only turn it on for the brief negative interactions with some of unpleasant people.
I did take the reg down and times of the incidents. Some camera footage from nearby businesses but not sure if audio is available which is unlikely and the way the Garda phrased it, unless a Garda witnesses the event, there's nothing that will happen. Genuinely felt worried I'd be driven off road on my route back
I am looking to start cycling in Ireland and am a bit unsure on what bike I should get to make the most out of it in the Irish weather.
I live in Galway and someone suggested me looking into gravels due to the weather being often wet. Due to the different setup and tyres they said that I would have more chances of getting out, which is also the best way to progress.
Consider also that I'm mainly interested in on-road cycling for now.
Given you experience in cycling in Ireland, would you have any recommendations on which type of bicycle I should buy and why?
I know people do it all the time but not sure what route is the safest in terms of car passings. Any advice appreciated.
The canal I cycling in this morning had smashed bottles all over the pathway and all up to the next lock. It was obviously done the night before deliberately next to the bins. There are CCTV cameras there I presume DCC owns. Should they be responsible for this. A lot of people would have gotten punctures this morning.
I’m a Brazilian immigrant living in Dublin, and I’m on the lookout for some friendly folks to go cycling with!
I thought this would be a good place to start looking, so I’ll try to summarize a bit about myself and the beginning of this journey
I'm 29 years old and my English is still basic and evolving. I’m a bit shy, which sometimes makes it hard for me to join groups and ask for directions in the sport
I came to Dublin for a relationship that didn’t work out. Instead of going back to Brazil, I decided to give this Irish adventure a shot, and it’s been winning me over with the good craic and magical places
I spent much of my childhood as a BMX race rider, so I’ve always loved bikes. As I got older, I switched to surfing, which I also noticed has a cool culture here. But, without a car, it’s tough to get to the beaches with all the gear. So, I decided to get back into biking to have an outdoor hobby and enjoy all the wonderful places this country has to offer!
I live in D6W and, from my research, I discovered Wicklow Mountains, which are close to home and seem to have many interesting spots, including The Blue Light where I had the best pint of Guinness with an incredible view. That experience made me feel like I’m on the right path in this journey.
However, since I’m a beginner and don’t know much about the area or mountain biking yet, I haven’t had the courage to venture onto the trails. Honestly, I don’t even know how to get there. But I’m trying to explore more and more, and I would really appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction.
I’d love to meet people for any type of ride, from the most basic to something a bit more challenging, discover new places, and have some good times!
Thanks a lot! 😊
Has anybody had any experience with cycle to work certificates. I was approved by my work but told I have to wait for a certificate. How long does it normally take? And does it come from my job or somebody else?
My HR hasn't a clue.
Thanks
Thoughts on this event?
They could have give more details on the routes as that is the most important aspect of the event.
There are 3 routes:
Based on other Gran Fondos I assume there may be partial road closures but this is speculation.
I'm planning long trips along Ireland with a ebike, pedal assist can get me up to 120km on a single charge and I have the stamina for assisting to get those kind of ranges.
But I would like to found ways of charging along the way to reach further destinations.
The battery is removable, but big. Making stealthing anywhere unfeasible.
So far I have thought of non chain (big store chains lack flexibility on what they do) street bicycle shops. I e-mailed two and was surprised by one saying no and the other not replying. I offered to pay for the service.
Coming in June and renting a small car but would love to maybe see if any places near these two locations do bike rentals? Might be out of luck as my partner doesn't drive so can't head into galway to get a bike and they drive back.
I bought a ticket for the Ring of Beara cycle, but unfortunately I won't be able to cycle that day.
The event is on Saturday 27th of May. I have the tickets for the 110km route.

DM for more info.
Tried bikmo but they exclude these bikes.
I’m looking to cycle from Dublin to limerick in the coming weeks and was wondering if anyone on this has done this before/ has any advice for it
Hello! I am looking to bike the wild Atlantic way this summer. Any advice on where to rent a touring bike? I'm not set on doing the whole route from Kinsale so any recommendations along the route are very appreciated. Thanks!
Hi everybody. I'm a PhD student who works on improving sports safety gear to reduce impact injuries/pain in sports like bicycling.
You can help me by filling out a very short (1-2 minutes) survey here:

I appreciate your time in advance!
Looking for some recommendations for off road bike trails around Dublin/Wicklow. I have an xc mtb and have done the trails round Ballinasloe/Ticknock but wonder if there is many longer distance/more exploratory trails than these trail centres if that makes sense? Nothing too hardcore. Cheers
I'm flying into Dublin in early September and am hoping to bike from coast to coast. The route suggested by google maps is: royal canal way -> old rail trail greenway -> R363 -> N63. I've done a few centuries in the last few months on a road bike in the US but have never ridden in Ireland before.
I am wondering if this ride is realistic to do in a day with a road bike with thin tires. It seems like the first two paths are unpaved and I am a little worried it will be slow moving on these trails. Also, will there be any issues riding on the roads?
Thanks for your help!
Is there a route to cycle from Athlone to Roscommon town that won't have many cars on it? (on a saturday)
My son is 2.5 years old and loves his balance bike. He’s very confident on it and races around. I’m looking towards Christmas to getting him his first proper bike, but finding it hard to find stockists in Ireland who sell good, lightweight kids bikes. There seem to be very few quality 14” bikes available on Ireland. There are lots of UK options, e.g. Cubley, Black Mountain, Sprog, Hornit etc to name but a few, but they are pricey to start with (which is fine for a quality bike I know will last and may be passed on) but I’ll be hit with Vat on the import which will whack up the price even more.
I’m currently looking at Woom bikes - based in Austria so shouldn’t be hit with customs? But wondering has anyone any other recommendations on a bike they found good for their little rider starting out?
Hi All!
Looking for recommendations on where to buy my first road bike in the Dublin area. Looking for:
- Recommendations on first road bike/ where to start
- Where to buy in Dublin area
- What to buy with bike (shoes, etc).
- Is it a better idea to go second hand on adverts
Have a bit of experience with a vintage road bike that I would ride at the weekend for fitness/ cycling journeys, but interested in investing in something that I can put some real milage into! Knowledge of road bikes isn't great I'm honest. I have dealt with Jimmy's in Portmarnock, who have been very helpful with fixes and advice.
Will be purchasing using bike to work scheme so willing to invest a few quid!
Hello all,
My Dad is looking to have his E Bike transported down to West Cork for a holiday and then back to Dublin again when he's finished.
Does anyone know of a somebody that does this service?
Many thanks
