Returning to international teaching with a newly qualified teacher spouse

Hi,

I'm a new assistant principal but a teacher with 15years of experience. I have three children and an engineer spouse. He is happy to train as a maths / science teacher. With 2 teachers and 3 kids, is it possible to find a tier 1 school? Does my husband need to teach for a few years in our home country before we can apply abroad or are international schools open to hiring one new + one experienced teacher?

I taught abroad for 8 years so am really keen to get back out there!

Any advice welcome, thanks.

How is the average Japan experience these days for an mid-career international teacher?

I’m currently at a very good school that checks all of my requirements in regard to salary, benefits, savings potential, and workload, but I don’t particularly enjoy the country. During my time off, I usually leave whenever possible. There’s just not much to do and it’s a hassle to get anywhere.

I don’t care to head to any of the other countries I’ve worked at in the past either. They had pros and cons, but nothing that’s pulling me back.

Is the average Japanese international school a viable place to look for a job mid-career (in my 30’s) or would I be kicking myself for leaving my current job to relocate there?

I’ve been to Japan plenty as a tourist so I know the general standard of living, but want to know more of what to expect working at a “tier 2” or “tier 1” school .

EU / Teaching Vacancies

Hi , I am Physics teacher my spouse is Science teacher too with 8 years of int teaching experience , currently I am looking forward to finding a job in one of the EU countries . I am registered in search but there is nothing fancy there /very few openings not more than 5 or 6. Do you think the season over ? I am looking on LinkedIn and also teacher horizons , glassdoors and etc but I can not get response from any schools . May I please get some advice on this ?

Is this normal maybe the hiring season over ?

Note : I have worked in the Middle East - I am not only interested in saving money ,my mental health matters too since mostly students there are coming from super rich families and there is no respect to educators , I am currently in one of the European Countries but not it is not EU . Majority of students here are just amazing and super respectful.

Is it true that international teachers only make $2000-$3000 dollars a month?

I have teaching experience and lived overseas as a child so today I was curious about the pay rate of international school teachers. It wasn’t as high as I expected. I understand that they would subsidies housing but in an expensive city I wonder if international school teachers are happy with their pay. Do you feel like your quality of life is better working at an international school?

Dashboard added to Int Teacher Salary

I added a dashboard to ITS to help visualize the info from the database in a faster way. I'd appreciate your thoughts to improve it.

Did I leave out info that you wish was in the new dashboard? Is the dashboard useful? Should something be taken out of the dashboard? TIA!

Teacher or Admin?

Hello, I'm a US-licensed ELL teacher of 10 years (5 years in the US and 5 in Korea) and I'm torn between the positions to apply for. After working in Korea, I returned to the US and got my doctorate and admin (P/AP) license (and run an organization here), but haven't been able to make the transition to a school admin role. I've been applying to international jobs in Korea lately and I'm torn whether to apply as a licensed teacher (which would be easy to get) then try moving up to an admin role when opportunity arises or continue applying to admin positions but have no guarantee on getting hired. I'd appreciate any advice. P. S. I speak decent Korean.

Escuela Bella Vista - RUN!!

I have become friends with a few teachers at EBV who have told me horror stories about their time at the school. I feel compelled to share my experience to inform prospective hires. While some current teachers hesitate to post negative reviews due to concerns about retaliation, I believe transparency is essential for those considering employment at the school.

One of the most pressing concerns at EBV is the administration’s lack of prioritization regarding staff safety. Multiple teachers have faced detention and deportation under circumstances where proper visas and documentation should have ensured safe entry. In at least one case, a teacher who wished to continue teaching remotely due to safety concerns was instead dismissed. The school's leadership has shown little regard for the well-being of its staff, making decisions that have directly endangered employees.

Additionally, many teachers are assigned courses outside their licensed areas, and the academic level of students is significantly lower than what was presented during the hiring process. The school’s administration has also been less than forthcoming about the realities of living in Maracaibo, often downplaying safety risks. While the city may appear calm on the surface, venturing beyond a few blocks from assigned housing can carry serious risks, particularly involving interactions with local authorities.

The work environment at EBV has become increasingly toxic, with teachers feeling misled, unsupported, and unable to voice concerns openly. Many foreign hires, including the entire elementary staff and a majority of secondary foreign hires, are leaving the school. This speaks volumes about the current state of leadership. The director’s rigid, dismissive approach fosters low morale and a general sense of instability among staff.

Given these issues, I strongly urge any educator considering a position at Escuela Bella Vista in Maracaibo, Venezuela to conduct thorough research and carefully weigh the risks before making a decision.

Best move for kids aged 11 and 13

Hi everyone

We live in New Zealand and are investigating international teaching for the start of high school for our son and start of intermediate/middle school for our daughter.

Our friends who have done international teaching with kids have had mixed experiences. Some have absolutely loved it and thrived, others struggled with the culture shock both overseas and reintegration on return.

Keen to hear others experiences with kids this age and recommendations of schools/countries that worked or did not work for them.

Our son is football (soccer) obsessed and a promising player so being able to continue playing at a good level is a must for him. Daughter loves the arts - dancing, performing, painting and drawing which seem to be well supported by most IS we have investigated.

Our own (parent) objectives are to experience something new and pay down our mortgage at home as quickly as possible - again something that appears to be offered by many postings.

Thanks!

Renegotiating from local to expat contract

Anybody have any advice on how to renegotiate my contract from a local to an expat contract?
I've been at the current school for five years; I was hired right as Covid started as I had been out of teaching for a few years after getting married and having kids. I moved with spouse to his home country some years before, and decided to apply to an IB school right as the country was shutting down for Covid. I actually got my offer while we were in complete lockdown, so I did not have the opportunity to come in person to sign and negotiate the contract. At the time, I stupidly put my married (local) nationality on the form, because I thought a foreign nationality might make things difficult with Covid regulations (borders were completely shut down for six months). Now though, after having discussed the matter with other international hires, I realize that I have been vastly lowballed (basically they are paying me the same as local teachers with no teaching licenses or Masters degrees in the subject). It hasn't been a huge issue before because spouse has a well paying job and we own a house here, but now that it seems we may stay here for the next 7 years or so (spouse wants our son to graduate from home country) I really want to negotiate a better paying contract. I would appreciate any advice if you think this is doable!

Teaching Abroad with Criminal Record

I have been employed at an international school for 4 years in Colombia but am looking for a new job currently. I have 2 OWI charges dating from 15 years and 6 years ago in the USA. I cannot expunge them because of the lovely state laws of where I lived in the USA. So, my question is what countries would I be better off applying for? I am a qualified teacher (Education major in ELA and w/ a TESOL degree) with good references, but I don't want to have to go through rejection after rejection. I know Middle Eastern countries, Japan, China, and Korea are off limits, but would like any other pieces of advice of where to look/not look.

Thank you in advanced for any insight offered!

Teaching Computer Science with a BA?

I'm looking at getting my BA in Com Sci by December OR finishing the OMSCS MA program which is 2 more years (long story how I got into that program but I've been doing 1 course a year for 3 years now and I can just go into overdrive and knock it out).

Would a BA be enough to get into teaching Computer Science at a decent Int School level?

EDIT: I have my US license, a MaEd and 12+ years teaching abroad

Guidance on career

Hey everyone,

I’m currently in the UK, training as a physics teacher.I have 7 years of teaching experience in India, along with some admin work. While the training is going well, I’m struggling with the winter darkness and cold—it's just not for me.

I’m not looking for PR or long-term settlement, just a good school in a warm country where I can continue teaching. I don’t have a "fancy lol" lifestyle, just looking for a decent work environment and better weather.

Where would you recommend applying after training? I’m open to international schools or any solid teaching opportunities. Any advice would be appreciated!

Canadian criminal background check online

Hello everyone,

For anyone from Canada and living abroad

I'm currently living in South Korea and trying to get a teaching job in China. One of the recruiters told me I need a Canadian criminal background check. From what I’ve researched, it seems like I have to submit fingerprints, but I was wondering if there’s any legitimate way to get it done purely online by just providing my personal information and paying a fee.

Has anyone managed to do this without fingerprints while living abroad? If so, which service did you use? Any advice would be appreciated!

Update:

Thank you for the responses.

I went through a company called Triton Canada (https://www.tritoncanada.ca/criminal-record-checks/) that does criminal background checks without the need for fingerprints.

Took less than a day to receive the results

Any Brazilians here? Is Licenciatura worth anything internationally?

Hi, a Brazilian teacher here. I am currently working in an international school in my country of origin. I'm trying to go abroad, but so far application process has not been going well. I'm starting to wonder if my qualification is not valid or recognised outside of Brazil. I have Licenciatura in Physical Education which to my understanding should be equivalent to Bachelors of Education. Does anyone have any experience with this? Thank you!

Thailand Degree Requirements

Asking for a friend: Is Thailand one of the countries where you need a matching degree in your subject as a secondary specialist? Or is any undergrad combined with a teaching license in the subject enough.

Any hope for those of us without Edu degrees?

I have 5 years of Australlian curriculum ELA intl experience, both teaching & curriculum, 14 years of higher ed academic writing exp, a valid teaching license and an MBA... but no EDU degree and hearing a lot of "You are amazing, but..." Just a little frustrated with the job search right now. I get why that requirement exists, but to have competency, skills and experience negated is depressing. Humbly approaching all tiers of schools in safe-for-women countries and grinding (gamer term, lol) in all the ways. I am also approaching 60, so options are a bit limited there.

Please advise: What schools or countries are more flexible in terms of degrees matching subject taught?

Hoping this amazing community can share experience, strength and hope! And thanks for being here! :)

IB PYP schools in London

Hi,

Does anyone know if there are decent International Schools in London? I know England has a terrible reputation for work/life balance as a teacher but is it better in top international schools?

I am particularly interested in IB schools as I am currently teaching PYP.

Also, any information on packages of these schools would be appreciated.
