Multicultural people wanted!

Hi! I'm a psychology student at Jagiellonian University and I'm conducting a study about ethnic identity.

I'm looking for young adults (18-30 yo) that were born/raised in the US but their parents are immigrants from two different countries outside of the US.

I'd like to interview such a person for the analysis in my master's thesis.

The interview would be online via video call.

If you're interested in participating or know anyone that would be, let me know!

Taking up space

What does it mean to you to take up space, specifically in an international or intercultural setting? How do you balance being your authentic self in a cultural space that is not your own with being respectful of that space, its inhabitants, and their desires?

There's no right answer here. I'm interested in everyone's thoughts.

Reading the posts, I thought that this may be of interest to the community. It's a short video covering the topic of intercultural communication in business with a focus on the Middle East. I hope you like it:

Intercultural Communication

Hello everyone. I’m looking for some inspiration for a school project about intercultural communication. Has this community been in discussion about anything tiktok related? Sorry if this is not the right subreddit or a dumb post.

American/Iranian gift exchanging

Hi everyone, I’m hoping this is the right place to ask this. I (single female not interested in any kind of romance) am in the US and recently an Iranian family moved in next door. The husband/father of the family has brought over bananas before and brought some treats for norwuz yesterday. I am not familiar with Iranian culture so I accepted because from the American perspective it is the polite thing to do. I googled a little about the holiday and learned that traditional gifts for the holiday would be flowers, pastries, and sweets so I bought and delivered a bit of each of those. In my mind it was a gesture of welcoming the family to the neighborhood. Today my neighbor gave me a necklace and shirt which was very kind but I think there were more intimate implications in the exchanges than I intended and am comfortable with. Especially when he told me not to mention it to his wife, I tried to give it back but he would not take them.

Should I have not accepted any of the gifts or given the norwuz gifts? Is there a proper way for me to return to the neighborly, platonic but cordial, dynamic?

Cultural Blending

What are your thoughts on the merging of cultures? Example: pidgin languages, appropriation, fusion cuisine, etc.

We have a podcast on multiculturalism, and want feedback from listeners on these types of topics. Spread the word if you know someone interested!

explorative conversations anyone?

I'm trying to find like minded people for brainstorming, exchange ideas and to grow with

I'm interested in health - curious of what goes into it (food, exercise, breath, relationships, thoughts, presence, spirituality, feelings, goals, etc etc) and how it affects our lives as individuals and as a community and people,

I'm also interested in communication, how we use so much more than words when we communicate and am curious in how we can become better at avoiding misunderstandings

and in community - locally and cross borders (of nations, cultures, class, etc) - how we can develop and use our different communities to a larger extent and better our individual and societal health from it

What we could benefit to learn as human beings as tools to handle our environment and excel, but are not taught in school or from our culture

Anyone interested in some explorative conversations?

I'm fascinated by how we experience culture, both foreign and native, and as a hobby, I write about it.

I feel compelled to write about intercultural experiences every now and then and I would love any critique that anyone may feel compelled to share with me.

As someone who moved to a different country, I'm fascinated by how we perceive and experience culture. Drive-Thru Culture is my latest post and it's about looking at one's own culture through the eyes of a non-native and discovering things in unexpected places.

Self Disclosure Interview Questions.

Hello everyone,

I am doing a class on Intercultural Communications and I have been asked to interview someone from a different culture from mine and from someone I have not interviewed previously for this class.

I am asking if someone would be able to take the time and answer some of the following questions. I have burned out all of my resources and my deadline for this paper is on Sunday night. It is now Thursday night where I am.

I am in the United States and have talked to an old friend of mine from Mexico. So anywhere outside of Mexico and the US would be of great help.

I would really appreciate anyone who would be willing to take time out of their day to help.

Thank you in advance. Please see below for question. (You can either put you answers on here as a reply or PM me.

Self-Disclosure Interview Questions

  1. Discover some basic information about the person:

  1. Where he/she is from
  2. His/her native language
  3. Whether he/she came from an urban or rural community

  1. Ask the person to describe life in his/her country as he/she experiences/d it:

  1. What topics of conversation are acceptable publicly when talking with someone you have never met before? Example: Politics, Religion, Sex, Sports, Weather, etc.

  2. When you speak do you use grand language filled with images, metaphors, and stories or do you simply present the relevant information calmly or with little emotion? Example: Some people talk with their hands and emphasize certain words to show importance. Do you provide elaborate stories to explain situations or do you provide detailed descriptions when you speak?

  3. How are schools organized:

  1. Grade levels, co-ed or single gender, are genders treated the same?

  2. If you are upset about a grade, how do you determine the approach to take in a discussion with the teacher, or is it even an option?

  3. How are the family patterns and gender roles displayed? Example: Are males more dominant in the family and have the role of providing the main source of income? Are females primarily responsible for raising the children and doing the cooking and cleaning? Do grandparents and other relatives play a role in raising the children and having a say in how things are done around the house or who is responsible for certain roles?

  1. Discuss the culture’s communication rules or codes for interpersonal relationships.

  1. Are there socially dominant groups that control interpersonal communication or a social hierarchy where formality and titles are expected? Example: Are elders to be called by Mr. or Mrs. Or Miss? Are there certain last names in your culture whom are more at the top of the social chain and are socially dominant? Do you have a President, Queen or King that rules?

  2. How would you describe the general affiliation or degree of friendliness among the people – are they cautious, outgoing, guarded, lukewarm in approaching others or do they avoid conflict? Example: When meeting new people are people using friendly and outgoing or are, they shy and avoid them? When approaching conflict, do you avoid the situation or do you handle the situation and approach the person causing the conflict?

  3. How are conflicts handled and is face important? Example: Face is the favorable social impression that a person wants others to have of him/her. In the instance of a conflict, how do you handle the situation and does it matter if you upset the other person or do would you rather avoid the situation and save your reputation with that individual?

  4. How do they use talk and silence? Example: Do you a very talkative person, as in do you speak in groups or do you have to wait to be spoken to? Do you speak up to elders and other family members or do you remain silent? Are there certain situation where you must remain silent?

  1. What are the things that Americans do that surprise you the most?

  1. Are there behaviors or concepts of Americans that cause you uncertainty, anxiety, or avoidance feelings?

  1. What are some of the American behaviors, values, or lifestyles that you find offensive or unacceptable?

** Please provide detailed answers with examples**

Thank you.
