Welcome to r/iNaturalist!

iNaturalist is a citizen science project and online social network of naturalists, citizen scientists, and biologists built on the concept of mapping and sharing observations of biodiversity across the globe.

Every observation can contribute to biodiversity science, from the rarest butterfly to the most common backyard weed - all you have to do is observe!

Any and all posts relating to iNaturalist and Seek welcome here.

Algorithm changes???

I have 2000+ observations over the last 2-3 years so I’m not new to iNaturalist. It’s been incredibly helpful to me personally and professionally. But I’ve noticed in the last couple months that it’s not identifying as well as it used to. So often it fails to make a solid recommendation and instead gives me the “We’re not confident but here’s some things that are visually similar or expected in the area”. Sometimes that has the correct one but more often they’re all obviously incorrect.

I identify primarily plants and I know what is important—both sides of the leaf, buds, flowers if present, whole plant, in focus, etc. This has always worked for me, but now it seems like it doesn’t. What’s up? Anyone else having this issue? Did they tweak the algorithm? I’m finding it a less useful tool and that’s disappointing to say the least. Often I’m leaving things at Dicot or Monocot.

My observations after about five years of use, love the app

I have worked lots of field jobs that let me see some cool places and cool species. Love insects and plants so most of my observations are those, but I've got some other groups sprinkled in for variety

Can't submit pictures

An error message keeps appearing saying that the image type I'm trying to upload isn't supported, however they're just .jpg pictures that I could upload until yesterday with no problems.

Maybe I post too much

I’ve only been on iNaturalist for about a month, and I’ve been obsessed the whole time. I got into birding (all nature-watching really, but birds are the most common/accessible) and I’m constantly posting observations. I go out multiple times a week taking photos, and I’ve rapidly become the main poster in my neighborhood. Almost all the blue pins on the map are mine.

It’s got me thinking, maybe I post too much? Maybe I’m a little toooo enthusiastic about common animal sightings. I think I’ll tone it down from now on, as best as I can. I might even go back and delete low-quality observations of common species, just to thin it out a bit.

Does anyone relate to this? Any thoughts? What is considered good posting etiquette for iNaturalist?

Why is one of my observations consistently not where it should be?

I don't have the location obscured, and it's not on private land or anything but for one of my observations no matter what I do it shows up on the Explore map as way off in the middle of a nearby lake instead of on land as it's supposed to. I've edited the location multiple times and it has only changed where the location is, but it's always wrong.

When the location has been wrong on other things before, I just changed it to where it should be and voila. This is the only one being weird.

When I click on it, it shows me the correct location, but it's mildly irritating looking at my observations and seeing one dot way off in the middle of nowhere. Not really a big deal, but just curious if anyone else has noticed this?

Grid/cell size in iNaturalist?

Does anyone know what grid / cell size iNaturalist uses on maps of observations? In case I'm not clear. The red squares that are generated for observations.

Planning to donate

I’m in Canada and I’m starting my yearly donations and I want to give to iNat this year. Just wondering if iNat issues charitable tax receipts. Does anyone know?

How do I keep Global colors from affecting my html code/iNaturalist widget?

I'm trying to use the iNaturalist widget using free elementor. I've placed the code in an HTML element which doesn't resolve the widget well. It seems to pull from the global colors that I've picked which I would like but all the boundry lines are off. Making elements to overlap one another. I have tried messing with some code but I don't know what I'm doing. Changing the size of things seems to have no effect and If I could turn off the color of just bountry lines that would solve my issues I suppose. One other weird thing is that the widget won't resolve at all in the preview window but once published it does resolve but with the issues already mentioned.

Any help would be greatly apprecated.

Things I wish I could change from most important to least important:

  • Change the color of the outlines
  • Make the photos larger
  • Change the font to atkinson hyperlegible
  • Change the layout of the elemets so nothing overlaps

Dead moles?

Does anyone know why there are so many dead moles on the paths out at Guelph Lake ( central Ontario, Canada) They don't seem damaged in any way just dead. I found 5 on my morning walk on Sunday.

How do I add a place?

I need to add a place to make a collection project for my school campus but after creating the kml file, the button for creating a place isn't there, and I do have the minimum 50 verifiable observations requirement, help please.

Is it only me who is annoyed and confused by how many disagreements still happen on iNaturalist when regarding the wild/cultivated classification?

Is it possible to open observations from the map?

When I select a species and click on the map of observations, it shows red squares where an observation was made. I can't click the square to see the individual observation. Is there a way to do this or at least some way around it? I think this would be a very useful feature.

SEEK app export observations

I am a middle school science teacher and I've just introduced the seek app to my students with a lot of success. They are quickly becoming obsessed with identifying new species. I want to create a master spreadsheet of observations that we can update throughout the year. Does anyone know of a way to export ones observations from the app to a spreadsheet? Thanks for any help.

For the location of the observations of others , is the observation exactly where the mark is or does the app not show exact location and only show a general area? What's that blue circle? Because I see some photos of observations that are impossible to be taken at the middle of the sea like that
