~15mm²/s oil suggestions?

I've got some hydraulic gate operators that I maintain for myself and a few of the same ones for friends/friends-of-friends.

The OEM fluid is available at $20/qt, but never locally; always at least 4 days shipping, and sometimes that's just frustrating.

I'm curious to see if anybody knows of any mineral oil-based hydraulic fluids with a viscosity of 13 to 15mm²/s @40c that might fit this application. OEM stuff is FAAC HP; it's pretty similar to some hydraulic oils for aerospace, but obviously that stuff is wildly expensive.

Still searching and going through specs but, e.g., if Mobil DTE 10 Excel 15 works, I can get that delivered to my door in 24 hours for half the price of my OEM fluid

Mercedes 1999 R129 Main Hydraulic O ring (Teflon)

Appreciate any assistance here.

I am in the process of replacing the O rings on a 1999 r129 mail hydraulic line. I have the piston disassembled and noticed that the lower teflon spacer that goes over the lower o ring has a split in it. I can not seem to find a replacement kit or otherwise that includes this teflon spacer. Any idea where I may be able to purchase one?

Any good resources on Hydraulic system design?

I'm building a hydraulic unit for seseveral tools. Need help with the design. Mostly after fluid exits the pressure compensated load sense pump.

Hydraulic log splitter has little power when extended

I'll start by saying I know very little about hydraulics so please be gentle with me it this is a silly question.

My parents have got to the point where they no longer want to swing an axe around to slit their fire wood so have splashed out on this log splitter that runs the pump off their tiny tractor auxiliary.

Today is the first time using it. My limited understanding of hydraulics tells me we should be getting the same pressure throughout the piston extension.

However logs that are placed on the blue base won't be split (it barely makes a dent) even though without anything on it will extend almost until it touches the base. The same log propped up on another log (like in the photo) will split no trouble.

Obviously this is only an issue on logs that won't fit under the piston fully contracted and the log we are using to raise logs to be split.

Further information: The fluid shows perfectly between min and max. The transmission that runs the pump has fluid. And it splits raised logs on low revs on the tractor but still won't at full revs on logs sat directly on the base.

Is this normal behaviour? Is there anything we could be doing wrong?

(Written on my phone so hopefully this is readable)

Losses in 300 feet of hydraulic hose extensions?

So let me start off by saying I don't know much about hydraulic systems. Barely the basics. Be gentle.

I recently purchased a piece of equipment that basically moves a 20 ton ramset up and down. The ramset and the mover that it sits on can be separated and connected with hose extensions to operate indoors.

I thought I could buy three 100ft sets of hose (3/8") for a basement job I plan on doing but the machine isn't running right when I hooked them all together. The motor functions decent with 100ft, struggles at 200ft and almost bogs down at 300ft. The pressure builds up really high on the ramset gauge (about 800psi at 100ft, 1400psi at 200ft, and over 2000psi at 300ft). This is all when the ramset is being retracted (moving down). I can extend (move up) the ramset easily enough no matter the length.

Note there is no load on the ramset when I'm observing this.

Am I just wishful thinking you can add that much length to a little pump and have it function correctly or could it be something else? Like air in the system?

Here is the machine:

Takeuchi Hydraulic Fittings?

Cross posting from another community. Those of you with heavy equipment experience, can you advise if Takeuchi machines mostly use BSPP fittings? Any other fittings commonly used on these machines? Maybe DIN? Also, same question for Yanmar equipment.

Thanks

2D Software Recommendations?

I am looking for a 2D software to create hydraulic schematics. My main use is to create DC and AC power pack configurations. My company uses Deltrol, Yuken, Hydraforce, Parkers valves.

Does anyone have recommendations for a free or low cost software I can use? Would be beneficial if there were plugins for branded valves. If I need to draw them from scratch I can do this as well.

Need controller for proportional valve

I have a 0-5v "proportional" joystick from suregrip but am finding out my kdg4v needs 0-20ma (or maybe 4-20?). Anyway what should I get? Seems like the simplest option with the something with a DIN rail I can mount with the motor control box. Do you have a specific item you can suggest it doesn't cost $1,000?

Going to build a oil can can crusher for class. What else im going to need/know?

Local community college student studying hydralics in the west coast. Have a month to build a fully working can crusher as a project for the main grade. Know mig welding and a a idea what the circult is going to be. I know i need a ram, lines, reservoir, bypass, power source, etc. Will have a crew with fellow students to build it, just I'm worried about cost, materials, and where to find it all. ( I'm in California, Sacramento area) I'm already looking at Craigslist for rams and a pump.

Edit: My professor hasn't given the finer details yet, so I'm not sure if it's hand powered or powered. Should have added this detail, apologies. Though a hand powered crusher would sound boring, so I'm thinking of going on and building one.

Why in the world would anybody route motor case drains into an undersized return line system with back pressure above recommended case pressure?

Awhile ago I posted about rebuilding a pair of drive motors on a skidsteer that had blown output shaft seals. Lapped the parts, all new seal kits and their great. In putting them back in and testing we found that there is over 60 psi coming from the case drain hoses to the motors. Eaton wants under 50 psi in the case.

Found out the case drains are hooked into the return lines for the hydraulic system. Lines are terribly undersized and creating back pressure. This system has a 28gpm and 15gpm pump and it all gets routed back to a -12 line., a bunch of tees and 2 filters. That doesn't even consider extra volume when the 2.5:1 cylinders start returning.

Why in the world would anyone hook case drains in like this? Presumably for filtering, so just add a leak filter. cheap is all i can figure. I've now got them straight to the reservoir and seals should be a lot happier.

Bosch Rexroth IH04

Does anyone have any first hand experiences with the Bosch Rexroth IH04 press module? We are looking at a new power / hydraulic unit for a 300 ton down acting press with a prefill valve. Would like to hear anything and everything one would have to say about it. Looks like an awesome way to recontrol the hydraulics of a press.

Fitting ID Kits

Can anyone recommend a good fitting ID kit for the below profiles?

  • DIN parallel with recessed rubber seal ring.

  • BSP parallel with copper washer sealing.

  • BSP tapered.

We work with purely metric tubing and fittings, for machinery from Germany, Japan, China, and Korea. Some guys aren’t knowledgeable enough to identify the fittings and thread profiles. The compression fittings are metric, from Hy-Lok (Korea) and Parker (Europe). Tubing fittings are mostly DIN, L and S type. No NPT threads used.

Ideally, a thread checker with male/female threads to screw in the fittings would be most helpful. Less chance of error compared to using the foldable thread gages.

Example would be needing a straight adapter fitting, End A for 12S compression fitting nut, End B is M16 threads and sealed by an o-ring recessed into the fitting shoulder where it makes contact with the hydraulic block.

Solenoid valve

Dear r/Hydraulics,

I stumbled upon this configuration of a solenoid valve, where a tube is connected to the top side of the solenoid. Is this proper usage or would this create problems? Can this be done with any standard solenoid valve or is this some special type

Crimping your own hydraulic hoses.

I work at a plastic injection shop and I have a question about making our own hoses. We would be looking at making 3/8-1/2” id hoses with male and female ends. What type of press and die’s would we need to purchase? Preferably sub $6,000 as our shop CFO is a penny pincher.

Plumbing Safety Factor

For those of you who size hydraulic lines and plumbing, I was curious on what minimum safety factor you typically stick with. For hose, I know the max pressure is based on 4:1, and that is usually what I use for tubing and pipe as well. I pretty much exclusively work on industrial systems rather than mobile, so it might be different. Any of you use something different?

As a disclaimer, I am not asking for a professional recommendation.
