Today, my 9-year-old son's friend knocked on the door and my son asked if they could play. I quickly said, "Sure". Then, after my son left through the front door, I remembered he was still wearing new shoes from school, so I yelled out of the open window on the side of the house, "Change your shoes!". My son ran back into the side of the house, changed his shoes and left to meet his friend.
When he ran out the front door, he didn't close the storm door completely (the main door and windows are open because its spring'ish). At the time, the dogs were hanging out with me and didn't start to notice anything was going on until my son had changed his shoes and left. When he did actually leave (this time through the side door), my 2 coonhounds noticed the front door was not fully latched (from where my son first exited) and they made their big escape, running out- nose to the ground. I followed and called them, but they were way too busy following my son's trail leading back into the house where he changed his shoes.
I had posted awhile back that I think I have a hound mix on my hands, and turns out that yes, my little dude is (mostly) coonhound!!

Rare picture of my beagle/mountain cur posing next to our kittens. Came back from taking out the trash and they were all waiting for me to come back 🥲
My girl used to act a fool around cats and now that we have a couple she’s become indifferent to them. Hoping they become friends as the boys grow older and bigger. They try their hardest to love on her so I think someday she’ll give into being a big sister.
I recently found a stray cat near my apartment. She followed me and my hound home. My hound seems to be fine around the kitten, but I’ve seen him hunt down and eat a rabbit whole. The kitty is around the size of a large rabbit, and I’m worried he might eat her. I’d also think that if they start playing, they might ruin my tv, ps5, or laptops and iPads when I’m away for work.
My first and current thought is to give the kitty up at my local shelter. But honestly, she’s been with us the last two days and everything seems fine. Whenever I think about giving her up, I start to feel a bit sad. My mom and every ex I’ve had has a cat, so I know a little about raising or having one.
Would I be doing the cat or my hound a disservice by keeping her?
Any stories or tips of success if I do decide to keep her?
Thank you
Coonhound and bulldog are inseparable. Thank God, as the coonhound has only been here since January.
...to me at least. My beautiful American Foxhound girl, Bella.
I have a very enthusiastic American foxhound, about 7 months old. As to be expected his cute ears are mostly for decoration, unless it's a bag of treats I'm opening inside the house. In side the house he will do any tricks I can think of teaching him and he might even do my taxes for me if I had the right treat. Outside how ever it's extremely hard to get his attention and if he is on a scent I think I could shoot him with a tank and he would not notice. I intend to use him for hunting hare (My fruit trees sustainable seemingly a big population so I think it's only fair that they sustain a few dinners for me, cuz I'm not getting the apples I should) and I some how need to be able to break him off wrong scents. If he drags a moose home, I'll get in trouble.
What methods have you successfully used to develop a semi decent call back?
Is there anything less than a meteor strike that works to break them off a scent?
Bonus points if some one has unlocked magic to stop attempted thievery of food items off tables.
I had a beagle before and he behaved like a border collie compared to this stubborn rascal.
Meadow - Ibizan Hound, 5yrs
Finally had time to take Shenan for a run this week. She may be old, but she still loves a light jog after a week of being cooped up in the house!
Worried Dog Dad
Abby’s my first and only dog. We rescued her - healing from a bout of Lyme disease - a year ago next month. We enjoy morning and evening walks. She loves the beach, apples, carrots, car rides, and sleeping. Best guess is she’s about 10 years old. But my poor hound wouldn’t eat this morning or tonight. Her ears are warm. And she didn’t want to walk for long. I hope she’s okay in the morning when I call the vet.
