Good day, I currently use a decent hr214 and it’s a tank. Bought it for $20 off marketplace and hasn’t let me down once. Last night I garbage picked a hrt216 that I can easily get running again. My question is should I upgrade and get only keep the hrt216 or stick with the hr214? I only have space for one mower. I have heard that the hr214 is bulletproof whereas the hr216 is a bit of a mixed bag of reliability. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks for reading!
Hi, I have a 2013 Honda HRX2173HYA that has started repeatedly fouling the spark plug. This started earlier this year in the summer and got progressively worse. Yesterday I decided to fire it up and mulch the last bit of leaves and run the gas out of it. It started, but smoked a bit and run roughly and at a lower RPM. Took out the plug and it was black with black oil residue. Cleaned it off with a wire brush, put it back in and it fouled again. Repeated the cleaning and also sprayed some carb cleaner in the intake ( big back fire!) and it fired right up and ran fine. The air cleaner element was clean, so I know thats not the issue.
Am I looking at replacing the carb? Or is it something else?
Thanks!
Home Depot restocked the HRX 217 gas mowers this morning, this might be the very last inventory we'll ever see for their residential gas-powered mowers.
The HRN 216 is restocked as well.
Various threads out there, such as this. Per my local authorized dealer, Honda is bowing out of residential gas lawn mowers for good, at least in the U.S. From what I was told, whatever inventory remains in 2024 is the very last that will be sold. Whether Honda moves to battery powered residential mowers is yet to be seen, but likely to happen.
HRX217HYA with the GCV190 engine, didn’t know it was wrong until I took things apart :/
This may be a dumb question, but I’m fairly new to these systems and I’m wondering if what I’m seeing is normal. I picked up a late model HRX217 used in the fall and have used it a few times and it’s absolutely amazing. The cut quality is awesome, the bagging is great, and it’s very powerful. Huge upgrade from the free push mowers I’ve always had before. The condition of my machine is very very good, having seemingly very little use, and the previous owner sold it to upgrade to a ride on model.
The self propelled drive is nice, but I’m wondering if it’s working right. If I engage the drive, I can feel the mower pulling itself along a bit, but it’s somewhat subtle, and definitely requires me to push it up inclines. If I pick the rear up off the ground, both rear wheels spin quickly. I realize this is a hydrostatic system, and the amount of load on the wheels will affect the speed, but having nothing to compare it against, I’m just not sure. Are these drives supposed to be very strong? It’s definitely helpful to have it engaged, I just don’t know if it should be stronger.
All,
Yesterday I was mowing, heard a clunk noise. Now, my wheels do not stop moving when I'm off the throttle. Engaging the throttle is also much more difficult now as well. When the mower is off, I'm not able to pull the mower backwards as the wheels are locked. Has anyone had this issue before? This is an HRX217K6VKA. This is a nice mower so I'm a little shocked as to how this happened. I'm going to take it in but thought it would be nice to try and find the issue before I do, if possible. Thanks.
I realized my manifold was leaking oil. After some research, I realized I had to replaced the silicone gasket. I used Permatex Ultra RTV and am still leaking oil. Any recommendations on how to properly fix it?
I have an HRN216 and I'm not crazy over it. It's an expensive piece of junk and I bought it in 2021. The deck paint instantly peels from any gas spills, dirt/dust gets under the gas cap and ends up in the tank, clogging the low speed jet on the carb which is impossible to clean, resulting in surging. Had to replace the carb last year for $60 and took 3 weeks to get the parts bc of being on backorder. Then I just replaced all the rear drive parts, including the axle bushings and bearings. I'll never buy another Honda mower again.
I am cutting my lawn for the last time today and have a storage question. Is it really important to put oil in the cylinder when storing the mower for the Winter?

Getting pissed and not sure what to do. Bought a new Honda HRX 217 last spring. Didn't use it at all last year due to already having another one. Took the mower in last November for the cam recall. Started using the mower this year and sometimes it would smoke on startup and smelled like it was running rich. Pulled the spark plug and it was black. Took the mower back to the dealer to see if there was anything they could do. They diagnosed it with a scored cylinder and had to order parts. 6 weeks later, I get the mower back and it still smokes on startup like it's burning oil. I have not been back in contact with the dealer yet. Anyone experience anything like this. Totally unacceptable for a new $800 mower.
Yes I got lucky and got a new HRC216 off market place. Paid a bit for it, but finally got one after battling with toro recyclers and everything else. I need to put it together, any do or donts would be great to hear.
Thank you in advance!!!
Hello, I have a brand new HRX217. Fired it up for the first time last week and the idle seems to fluctuate a lot. I've read that this is mostly due to a dirty carb. How can the carb be dirty if it's brand new? Is this common with Honda mowers? And how do I fix? Thank you!
Anyone figure out a way to mod the clutch handle to make it a wider? It just is out of reach for me to engage it with my thumbs.
I just finished mowing my back yard and noticed this hole in the side of the deck. Can this be fixed or will it have to buy a new mower?
Have a pressure washer with a GCV200 and figured I would get the best response here. I have the same motor on my HRX217 and never seen this issue. Have a leak at the oil spout. Would the best thing to fix is to just replace the spout and o ring? Just a leak I've never seen before.
Just received newsletter on the new lawn mowers . I changed the plug for the first time on my GCV170 yesterday. I bought a BPR5ES per the Honda website. When I removed the old one it was a BPR6ES. Any idea which I should actually use?
Purchased off Amazon and I’m curious if Honda wraps carburetors in bubble wrap or not.
Just got this mower. Planning on replacing carb and spark plugs. Starts on first pull but after engaging smart -drive, the mower shuts off. Any ideas?
Hello, I have a 5 year old HRN216VKAA. This thing gets used and abused in my lawn weekly, and now all of a sudden there is an issue with the front wheels.
The wheel housing? has dislodged causing that wheel to be very uneven and not lay flat. I have tried to pop the thing back in, but it looks like there may be a screw hole in the back that is missing the bolt?
Has anyone dealt with anything like this before? I don't even know what to call that part when doing searches.
Thanks in advance!
Hey there - per the video, my mower keeps stalling out when idling. Any suggestions on what the issue could be?
It starts great now, I tried to clean the carb (not sure I did a good job), and the fuel filter is unclogged (I think).
Any advice is appreciated
