Is it typical to take 5 shots off the mask in a typical D league game? Just picked up with a team in a new arena and have never taken more than a single shot off the mask before. Only been playing for a year in beer league so just wondering what others have experienced. Seemed a bit excessive.
Ok coming back after at least 10 years off the ice. I used leather straps on my last set of pads I see, most if not all modern ones have Velcro. My question is, does the Velcro hold a connection during a season. Pads take a beating, I’m concerned the Velcro won’t hold up. Am I right about this or am I just being too old school in my thinking.
Did an MRI on Tuesday. Got me a mail from a surgeon yesterday. He booked an appointment. A surgeon. Must mean the obvious?
I have a feeling that my season is fucked. And I don’t know how to cope. I’ve been picking up starving again, so I mean. It’s going great 😄
This was my year. Been looking forward to hockey all fucking summer.
How to cope?
I subbed for my very first game as goalie today... but I was given the wrong time by two different people and confirmed it three times. I got a call 20 minutes before the game and was on the ice by 2nd period. So I'm very frustrated.
Also the game didn't go great. Got scored on twice. Both were breakaways. Saved two shots tho.
Vent over. Thanks for listening
I’ve always been a moderately flexible goalie and I grew up idolizing Marc Andre-Fleury, so ever since I heard an interview with him years ago where he said that he does his leg pad strapping fairly tight at the bottom while getting progressively more loose going up to the thigh I always just copied that method.
That setup has been pretty comfortable to me, but I just came across a very interesting InGoal Mag interview with Red Wings goalie Alex Lyon here:
https://youtu.be/H_B94SYCHPg?si=LN79u6Cm-dKnzRN7
In the interview Lyon talks about his personal setup, where he prioritizes his connection to the knee block but then he’s very happy to have a very loose connection below that. By combining loose calf strapping with a very long skate lace toe tie he’s able to “get a much wider butterfly” than he would otherwise, and he also talks about how his long toe tie setup gives him an edge in consistent laces-on-post RVH integration along with making pushing out of the reverse much easier.
I’m interested enough to try this approach, even though it’s the opposite of how I’ve played over my lifetime.
I’m curious though, how do you all do you pad strapping, and why? Are there different tips or tricks you use to get the most out of your leg pads?
I have to have bone shaved off in my hips which is sad to hear because I’ll miss most of my season. But anyway, I’m curious if anybody here has had the surgery before and if so, how long was the recovery process?
I'm playing 4-5 games a week this year, Thursday, Friday, Saturday 2x and Mondays and I can smell my gear is starting to get away on me
I hang it up on a laundry rack and have a fan on blowing 24/7 and, with the exception of the Saturday games, my gear is dry by the time I have to repack my bag
Any suggestions on what to do/use to treat and manage the smell?
First of all, shut up haha
I'm a brand new goalie with 6 skates under my belt. My first two outings, I wore knee pads under my pads and was bruising my 39 year old knees up pretty bad. I picked up some volleyball knee pads and that's seemed to help the bruising, but I noticed I'm getting abrasions/rug burn on my knees. I had the same thing without the volleyball pads too.
Is it my terrible technique? Or does anyone else run into this? I think it's funny that getting hit in the head isn't bad, but my knees are on fire!
Hey all - looking to install custom cages decals but wanted to clean the mask up a bit. Is it ok to use rubbing alcohol on a Bauer 950?
Geebus …. 1:45 am and I’m still pretty wired on adrenaline! Played at 5 pm tonight after work and had a personal best game since I started my goal tending adventure almost two years ago ago at the tender age of 54. Backstopped my team to a 6-1 win and surrendered the lone goal on a breakaway with just 4 mins remaining. …still looking for that elusive shutout
Had a military appreciation event at Amalie tonight and completed a shootout shutout
I’ve skated out the last 15 years and decided to give goalie a try but can’t handle these laces on the pads. I bought used gear for now to test it out and legit takes me an hour to gear up.
Is it possible to swap the laces off and put Velcro on? Anyone have a video on this if so.
Thanks
I took them out for my last game and I felt more "free", though I don't really think it helped my butterfly.
I'm not taking a safety risk am I by taking these out?
Hi friends! I'm a fairly new goalie playing ball hockey in Vegas and wanted to share the most recent video I made! Any feedback would of course be appreciated (pls be nice lol) :) hope you guys like it :)
Hey all. I have the Bauer supreme Mach chesty I bought new a few months back. I don’t mind it but far from love it. Having some armpit sealing issues and upper shoulder shots are more painful than I’d expect from the better shooters
Looking to change and am really struggling with where to look for a bit better protection, quality, and honestly mobility. I play in at a variety of skill levels but the higher levels are where I notice it.
Was going to go brown but didn’t realize he’d called it quits. Now I’m lost. I’m a Brian’s lover but seems mixed reviews on their option.
Thanks!!
Thanks in advance
My first game as a goalie was yesterday night and when I’d shuffle my skate blades would make like a really bad squeaking sound, what is it? Is it my technique or the blades or the sharpen? I currently have a 1/2 sharpen but it may be dull cause I walked on wood and concrete (with guards of course)
So, I got the Bauer HF2 (junior) goalie skates and i LOVE them. I know they are completely different then the traditional skates with laces. But, does anyone else feel like the heel lock is... lacking? I can't explain it. I tried the 2-2.5 skate size and it was so tight and felt like my feet were being clamped down even at the 1st notches, very painful. I got the 3-3.5 and it feels great.
I read in other places that the heel lock is lacking. I am still getting adjusted to the skates. I spoke with a goalie coach and he said that his konekt skates were quite the adjustment due to the heel lock and overall feeling.
Just wondering from others! I really enjoy them so far!
Would you guys say that the carbon starting to crack is concerning?
Hello fellow goalies!
I (30F) started playing recently and I have a set of borrowed pads. The frist time I tried to play with them, when I tried to get down and hit the ice in a butterfly, it HURT.
Like excruciating, felt like I just slammed my knees straight to the ice with no pads whatsoever. That definitely scared me away from wanting to try it again, and I've been trying to develop my technique with moving back and forth, saving with my stick, diving etc.
I play for a club where the teams rotate depending on who is available, so I have plenty of places to practice but we're hurting for goalies, looking for new ones and I don't have a great way to train or learn from people who have more experience.
Recently, Iw as in a game and the other goalie, who had years of experience, told me that me my knee pads looked a little too short, and that I might have an easier time if I tried to find a longer set of pads (I'm 5"7)
I was wondering if that might explain it? I'm assuming it's not SUPPOSED to feel like a hammer to the kneecaps to butterfly, otherwise goalies wouldn't be doing it all the time.
Could I have put the pads on wrong? Or would longer pads help? I've been scared to try it again in a real game because it hurt so much when my knees slammed down.
Hi! I was wondering what are your best blocker picks. I’ve used CCM P2, True 7x3, which are lefevres designs that I was not the biggest fan of. The feeling of the puck was not enough for me. But I used a Nike Bauer Supreme One95, which was the best blocker ever in my opinion! I know it’s about 16 years old but I really wish someone who used that blocker could help me find what’s the best modern fit for it! Or else, if you guys are in love with a certain blocker, let me know!
Hey guys. Been a long time lurker here for a while and just recently (and finally) started playing in goal a couple of months ago. Currently I am wearing a set of older Reebok GP18K leg pads that are a tad too small(both where my knee sits and also too short) so I’m looking to upgrade.
I have no clue where to start so any advice on a nice set of pads within my $700 budget would be greatly appreciated.
Played my first game last night and this is the morning after. I currently have some older Vaughn Ventus lt600’s cause it was all the store in my area had. They’re too big for me so I have to clear tape them down but they still shift a lot and I was scared to drop cause of the pain. Any recs for some cheaper intermediate/junior knee pads?
I’m just going to get straight to the point, my relationship with my goalie partner has been awful, and I just don’t get why. I feel like I have always tried to be nice to him, but he just is always rude. Idk, it’s most likely because he is competitive, but, when swayman and hlmark were together, they were like best friends, weren’t they?
All I have ever wanted is to be friends with my goalie teammates, there are just so many benefits, and besides, who doesn’t want a friend?
I mean, I have definetly been doing actually tad bit better lately, but, I really don’t know.
I know this just contradicts what I just said, but yesterday in practice I did not do good at all (I’ve done good every other day besides yesterday specifically), and he was actually happy. I kid you not he would like punch his fist in the air every time I let a goal in. And idk I just snapped and we argued.
Idk can yall please help me out here? I really just want to be friends with him but idk what else to do.
Anyone have a good suggestion on where I can get replacements for the Velcro calf strap attachment piece for the px3 catalysts? I’ve looked at the “repair” kits sold online at most stores and they don’t have what I’m looking for. It’s this black piece shown here on a similar pair from eBay.
I play both men’s and women’s leagues.
First game on the men’s side was a shit show. I didn’t play well but I was getting hacked all game, including a two handed slash over my glove hand after the whistle blew on a cover. A guy screaming “yeah you fking bch” after scoring. We won by 1 goal.
Last night on the women’s side, we were up 2-1, they had six skaters out at the end, puck ends up under my knee block. Not sure if it was still visible or what since I could feel it but was not about to lift my knee up. No whistle blew and the opposing team literally just put their sticks against my pad and pushed me (and the puck) into the net and then complained to high heaven when the goal got called off and accused my 4’11” defender of roughing them because she pushed them off me. Screaming “you are so f*king lucky” as they skated off the ice.
What is wrong with people? Are skaters okay? This is ridiculous and it’s only Nov. Like…this is mid-level beer league. Some of you are 60 years old…is it this serious? I’ve been back on the ice for a couple years but these as the first two games of the regular season this year have me rethinking whether I should continue playing at all. Do people not just…ENJOY hockey? It’s not like this is even some kind of league final that could work people up a bit.
Just also hoping for some solidarity I guess.
Why can't I say no?
Played 3 games today, one with a squad I'm on, the other two because I was at the rink and felt bad when I saw the canvas tendie coming out.
My season just started, I'm sore as heck. Tomorrow's gonna suck - but guess who agreed to be on the ice for a 2100 puck drop?
Is it just me, or are you all like this too?
