Any Pakistani living in Guinea-Bissau? What Pakistani Telecom sim provides roaming there?

A friend of mine is traveling to Guinea-Bissau, what I know and experienced is Ufone provides Roaming without getting it activated at least in Gulf Countries.
So, it's useful to stay connected to your Network ; even if one doesn't make or receive calls; you know for OTP and SMS services.
Can anyone please confirm any SIM Pakistani SIM that works in Guinea-Bissau?
I will try asking in other Subs as well.
Thank you very much.

Survey about your political worldview (18+; 15-30 mins to complete)

Hello, we are a group of psychology researchers from the University of Kent, UK. It would be a huge help if anyone from any background who is interested would fill out our quick survey (18+ years old only) about your views of politics, society, and more.

Fill out the survey here: https://universityofkent.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_8ICkX7mBre5IGpM

We are posting here because we hope to collect responses from a wide range of political perspectives and backgrounds. Please let us know if you would like a summary of your responses in comparison to others once the data collection is complete.

The survey takes 15-30 minutes to complete, and we are happy to respond to any queries or questions. Please private message us to avoid giving away the point of the study to others.

Thanks for your time.

Edit: The survey is now closed! Thank you very much for your time, we will be sure to post the results up here when they're ready.

What is the national dish of Guinea Bissau??

ok, so I am making a series where I cook every national dish and my first step is to come to the sub and ask the question.

Amilcar Cabral Colonial Portugal's Nightmare

He gave the Portuguese colonialists hell. And he liberated his native Guinea-Bissau. 1956 he founded the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde.

Cape Verde was another Portuguese colony - Cabral’s parents came from there.

Thanks to his political activism, he became to Portugal what Patrice Lumumba had been to Belgium: public enemy number one.

We remember Amilcar Cabral, who was assassinated on 20th January in 1973.

PAIGC Exec CTTE Member on Repression of Party

The PAIGC has long been respected and supported in Guinea-Bissau for being the party of the people, run by the people. After all, it was the PAIGC that won the country its independence after a brutal armed struggle against Portuguese colonialism led by Amílcar Cabral. For the first several years of Guinea-Bissau's existence as an independent state, the country's sovereignty and institutions were synonymous with the PAIGC party. However, a coup d'état in 1980 changed the relationship between the party and the state. After power was seized by a small minority, the country was forced to open itself up to multi-party democracy. Since that time, the PAIGC has won every single election it has competed in except for one in 1999.

The current president of Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, has been accused of coming to power via a soft coup supported by regional bloc ECOWAS against the PAIGC party. He is now also accused of working to repress the PAIGC, including in the aftermath of their victory in the June 2023 legislative elections. Embaló has vowed to remove, illegally, the prime minister that the PAIGC has put forward.

For more insight into the situation, African Stream spoke exclusively to Imani Na Umoja - a member of the PAIGC’s central committee.

Do you think President Embaló will end up getting his way?

Hello, I started this micronation in the United States called Emlynia, and I’m trying to get at least a majority (even if it’s 1 person) vote from every country to recognize us, you don’t have to recognize us, you have an option. This isn’t forced recognition.

What are some popular non-Portuguese surnames?

I'm trying to research Guinea-Bissau a bit and I'd like some names and surnames that are from the native ethnic groups there, or at the very least non-Portuguese ones, because I'm really interested in that.

Help in translation of an expression some children seem so shout

When I'm walking around Bissau some children seem to shout "Branco Pelele" or something along those lines. I have asked some people around and they said to let it go because it was something not very nice that some children say to white foreigners, but never elaborated to explain the meaning of this expression. I would appreciate if you could help me with this one!

Striking dock workers at the Pidjiguti docks in Port of Bissau, are fired at by Portuguese colonial police in 1959, leading to 50 dead. The massacre would lead to the Guinea-Bissau War of Independence that lasted 11 years, leading to the country's freedom.

Which dishes best represent the cuisine of Guinea-Bissau?

Hello! I am doing a cooking challenge where every week, I cook food from a different country. Guinea-Bissau is coming up soon and it's proving to be a difficult country to find dishes for so I would love some help. Each week, I usually cook a few main dishes and any appropriate sides, but I often will also make breakfasts and snacks, sometimes dessert. Just about any kind of meal can work, even if it's super simple. I'd just like to best represent the kind of food eaten in Guinea-Bissau.

So far, I am considering making:

  • Caldo de mancarra
  • Cafriela de frango

If you have any suggestions, I would love to hear them! Links to authentic recipes are also welcome if you have them (it's fine if they're not in English, Google translate has worked pretty well for me so far).

Looking for a safe country for my Sudanese Family.

They are literally coming from Sudan, which is a bit insane at the moment, so anywhere that isn't in the midst of civil war will be probably be safer.

I'm searching for a place that's relatively safe, affordable, and fairly friendly to Sudanese people. I make okay money and can pay for them, but I do need a place that is affordable and where long term visa may be an option.

  • What would be the budget for 3 adults?
  • What parts of the country are safe?
  • Any advice? What do I need to know about?
  • Are the people friendly towards foreigners?

Need help for a project - What is Guinea-Bissau's most iconic cult film?

I'm working on a list of every country's most iconic cult film (list here: https://boxd.it/n5ZFs) and wondered if anyone could help me figure out Guinea-Bissau's entry. I'm looking for a film that might not be well-known outside the country's borders. Perhaps it's a film everyone knows, and is hugely popular only to Guinea-Bissau's audiences, even if it wasn't popular with critics. Or maybe it's a film that wasn't well-received by audiences or critics, but has gained a cult following in the years since its release. Any suggestions would be most welcome!

The Guinea-Bissau War of Independence begins in 1963, as the resistance fighters begin a 11 year war, that would ultimately result in defeat of the colonial Portuguese rule, and liberation of the country.

Much like other African conflicts during the Cold War, this saw the Soviet Union, Cuba backing the rebels. It ended after the Carnation Revolution in Portugal that overthrew the dictatorial regime, and led to Guinea-Bissau's freedom.

Why You Should Experience the Beauty and Diversity of Guinea-Bissau: A Traveler's Perspective

I recently had the opportunity to take a trip to Guinea-Bissau, and let me tell you, it was an experience I will never forget. From the moment I stepped off the plane, I was struck by the beauty and diversity of the country. The natural landscapes were breathtaking, from the pristine beaches to the lush rainforests.

One of the things that stood out to me the most about Guinea-Bissau was the warmth and hospitality of the people. Everywhere I went, I was greeted with smiles and open arms. The locals were always eager to share their culture and traditions with me, and I felt truly welcomed into their community.

Another aspect of Guinea-Bissau that I found particularly fascinating was the rich history and cultural heritage. The country has a rich mix of different ethnic groups and cultures, each with their own unique customs and traditions. I was able to visit historic sites and monuments, and learn about the country's rich history and its role in the slave trade.

But what really sets Guinea-Bissau apart is its natural beauty. The country is home to a wide variety of wildlife, and I was able to see everything from monkeys to crocodiles. The beaches are also a must-see, with crystal clear waters and white sand that stretches for miles. The sunsets were particularly memorable, with the orange, red and purple hues reflecting on the water.

All in all, my trip to Guinea-Bissau was an unforgettable experience. It's a country that truly has it all: friendly people, rich culture and history, and stunning natural beauty. I would highly recommend a visit to anyone looking for a unique and enriching travel experience. And for those looking to immigrate, it's a great country to consider, with a welcoming community and a high standard of living.

visa update?

Ola!

I am looking to travel from Abidjan In a few weeks. I want to visit senegal, gambia, Guinea bissau and guinea Conakry in one trip, as cheaply as possible.

As someone who needs a visa (US citizen), do you think it would be cheaper to fly in from dakar or Conakry then get a visa on arrival, or would it be better to try to get a visa in dakar or ziguinchor and try to overland it? Also, is overland still impossible from Conakry?

Thanks in advance for all the tips!

Geography teacher here with questions from my students for people living outside the U.S.

Hello everyone. I am an AP Human Geography teacher, the class is basically why things are where they are. I prompted my students to ask questions to people in other countries as that is a big part of our next unit on Culture and am now trying to find people to answer said questions. If you are outside of the U.S. and interested in this brief survey, any response is wonderful.

The link is here in a Google Form. No names or email addresses are collected.

Thank you!
