Simple question: should I buy the new Foretrex 801 or the GPSMAP 67?
I had been waiting for Garmin to upgrade the Foretrex 601 to USB-C, and they finally did it with the Foretrex 801. However, in the meantime, the GPSMAP 67 also became available.
Now I'm unsure whether I should buy the GPSMAP instead of the Foretrex. Both devices have the three basic systems (GPS, Glonass, and Galileo). GPSMAP 67 also includes QZSS, Beidou, and IRNSS, which aren't very important to me since I'm in Europe. The InReach functionality doesn't interest me.
I am not in the army, and I primarily intend to use it for tracked and untracked hiking. Similar battery specs. On Foretrex I can also rely on rechargeable AAA and as for cartography, I was thinking of relying on the CalTopo app on my phone and paper maps.
Share your experiences and suggestions, thanks!
Heyoh there!
Ive been trying to search for information regarding this topic wether or not its possible to use my watch as a GPS for my phone via bluetooth?
I like to hike and camp a lot. And while hikig amongs the snow covered mountains or dense forests, connection is gonna be an issue. But i still want to be able to use my gps location on lets say google maps to keep track on where im going.
So is there a way to use my gps on my watch to guide me on google maps or perhaps another app that allows for it? I have an Xioami Amazfit with GPS+ Glonass.
I know there are watches like garmin etc that have built in maps, but those are super expensive.
Hopefully, someone can help me figure out how my wife is tracking my location. A little background, my wife and I once subscribed to a family monitoring app when the kids still lived at home but removed it when they moved out. We have been married for 26 yrs., and anytime I leave the house and break from my usual route or routine, she somehow knows about it. Example: Both of us have never been phone people and extremely focused while at work, so we rarely talk or text throughout the day. However, several months ago, anytime I left the office for one reason or another, she would call or text. For most of you, this wouldn't sound suspicious, but for the fact that on the days I stayed at the office, she NEVER attempted to contact me. However, the VERY few times I unexpectedly left the office, she would call or text me. When it first began, her questions were extremely direct... (where are you? or are you still at the office?), but became more subtle when I brought up the unusual coincidence during a recent argument. Now she comes up with an "IMPORTANT" question that requires an immediate answer. Once the issue is addressed, she will slip in the obvious, "are you still at the office?" She and I are both very jealous people by nature, which reached Jedi level once the last child left for college.
I've removed all app permissions from accessing my location and even gone to the extent of using a fake GPS app that falsely assigns my position to a specific coordinate in Europe. I'm not looking to cheat on her; it's the principle of the point. We agreed to discontinue the tracking subscription once we became empty-nesters. But if she is going to renege on our agreement, then I want to either keep her from monitoring me or continue with the original monitoring subscription, which she vehemently against. She enjoys nature and likes to sit at a local nature preserve and collect her thoughts.
The problem is, these "collection" episodes can last 2-4 hours, and ALWAYS on days I'm at work and can't join her. I suffer in silence as she disappears for an extended period with no accountability, yet I'm held to a higher standard, and it pisses me off!!!
I love her dearly, and yes, some issues can only be resolved with a counselor, but I'm at my wits end with this double standard. I would hate to lose the 26+ yr marriage / 28+ yr relationship to this soul, but I feel I've reached my end. The only thing sustaining me through this commitment is the hope for a better day and the effects on our children should it fail.
If so, does anyone know of one?
be the default direction you're facing? I deliver package for amazon and it sucks when the gps doesn't know which way im facing until i start moving for a few seconds but then i might be going the wrong way. i'm no programmer but these doesn't seem like a hard thing to fix. what do you guys think?
Hi guys,
How would you best describe the advantage of History Mode for a GPS tracking application.
With the focus on people not assets.
Also it would only be applicable in a family environment.
Same thing applies for the Geo-Fence - how would you describe to best way to take advantage of this feature in an application.
Much appreciated in advance.
Hope I was clear enough, if not let me know :)
Is there such a thing as ingestible tracking devices? I read about a patent for them on google: https://patents.google.com/patent/US7554452B2/en
I am worried someone may be tracking me, with malicious intent, with something similar to this.
If anyone has info on how to confirm/deny this or possibly disable it, I would be very grateful. Thank you!
So my car gets its clock signal by GPS. At around 11:34 AM EST it suddenly changed to 8:00 AM, then to 7:00AM, then to the correct time around 11:35.
I was just curious if this might have been some kind of interference or jamming with the GPS signal.
Hi there! I’m really hoping to get some help here, you will soon understand how ignorant I am in regards to the whole GPS world. I practically need to transfer some waypoints from my Garmin GPSMAP 64sx handheld unit to the software Oziexplorer. Saying that I’m having huge problems is nothing; I have spent the whole night trying to find a damn way to complete the task. Could someone please explain me step by step what I need and how to? I would really appreciate it!
If I use my iPhone as a GPS, it consumes data... If I use my GPS unit, it's data free, yet they both do the same thing.
I'm looking at a cheaper plan that would use less data so I'm going thru each app and was just wondering why Google maps uses data and a GPS unit doesn't.
When I say GPS, it's a 8~10 year old device that I haven't used in a long time, but still works fine and requires no data plan.
I'm guessing it has to do with the directions being on device vs on Google's server.
Hello, I bought the Mio device and installed the desktop software. For subscriptions, like radar systems actualization and "unlock functions" it asks a 25 character Product Key. According to their website it should be on the CD box. But my CD came in a paper pouch with no key anywhere. I've also tried the start up key, S/N, P/N, nothing works. Any idea?
Also, can someone explain how does the traffic situation information gets into the device real-time when the device communicates with GPS only?
I always thought that you are stuck with maps (basically pictures) uploaded onto the device and the only thing the device does is to show a dot according to GPS and tells you, where on the "picture" you are. And any changes need to be uploaded using PC. Can anyone explain how modern devices work in this regard?
Thank you very much!
Supposedly this is affected by the week rollover.
Is it worth thrashing with TomTOm to get it updated?
CAn I download mAPS FROM other sources after TomTOm cuts me loose because it's 'obsolete' or do the maps have to be in some proprietary format to be 'seen' by the TomTOm?
Can it be rooted? Is it run by an android OS or some other kind of tomfoolery?
Looking for a program that can do this. Unfortunately, Google earth does not have this feature. You can turn on gridlines in Google earth, but as you zoom in it shows more and more lines and then when you zoom out the more specific ones (such as 92.25 degrees west) are gone. I am looking for a program where you type in any gridline of your choosing (like as specific as 37.641 degrees north) and it shows only that line, no matter how zoomed in or zoomed out you are. As a plus, if you could show a few specific lines of your choosing in a program like this, that would be awesome. Really would appreciate the help in finding this
Hi all
I am looking for a standalone GPS time sync portable device with a display and can show UTC/Local Time and with different time zones also day, date, speed, heading, SNR, altitude and latitude/longitude, sunrise/sunset and how many satellites in view and strength and fix also compass, bearing, temperature, barometer.
Please let me know if someone can make this for me possibly on Raspberry Pi or Arduino.
I run a small equipment rental company. We'd like to be able to ping a piece of equipment and get its location. We don't need or want full time tracking. Ultimately, we'd like it to be 6v or 12v so it can run off the machine's or trailer's battery. Along with its own battery back up.
We have multiple machine brands so buying into each of their telematics would be very costly.
Is there a cost effective product/service like this?
What GPS features do you look for? Especially for those driving larger trucks.
Hi,
I have multiple questions regarding GPS and location data in regards to E911 calls from cell phones. I kind of understand how AGPS works in conjunction with other tech under normal circumstances when in a well covered area and with everything up and running but have questions as follow. Hoping someone here call help.
When a cell phone is turned off in one location, then moved several hundred miles, does the phone's GPS need to acquire new almanac and ephemeris data? When does it do so? On power up? Is a connection to mobile data required to do so at cell network vs GPS satellite speeds? Will it download the updated GPS data from cell network if left in airplane mode? What if location services are turned off? Would it only try to download the data at the time the 911 call was placed? What if the phone is only turned on (after being moved) where there was a very weak signal, just enough to make a 911 voice call? Would it then have to download the almanac and ephemeris data from the satellite? Can the carrier "ping" the phone to obtain GPS data?
Also, regarding emergency services/E911, do they automatically get sent GPS coordinates? I understand that there are problems, especially with older/legacy equipment. Do they only get carrier data from towers? Do they "manually" have to request this from the carrier under exigent circumstances such as in the case of a rescue?
Sorry for so many questions. Went down a rabbit hole and am on a learning spree. Thanks!
I need to enhance the GPS read of several Android, Samsung Galaxy A50s. I would really like to get it within 2 or 3 meters. I've heard of devices like Bad Elf, but I'm no expert.
Anyone have any recommendations or suggestions?
Hi.
Is there a good GPS app to install on family member's phones to track their movements but secretly? Yes, yes, I know what you're thinking but this is for very old people to make sure they're not lost and also don't surprise me when they come to visit. :)
I'm hoping for straight buy the app and not monthly charges.
Cheers.
I am looking for s keychain sized programable Tracking Device. I saw a couple of ali express but i am not sure if they are programable.
Hi, I have an etrex 30x and am using it on a bicycle tour. I would like to easily switch (one button) between pages. I.e. I'd like to be able to flip flop easily between map screen and trip computer screen. Is there an easy way to do this while riding? Thanks
I'm looking for a small lightweight gps unit with a long battery life and fairly inconspicuous..
Any options for something like this? Planning to.use as anti theft device.
Is there a way to have 2 gps locations on my Android. As in making your phone be in 2 different locations in different apps?
Hi guys, I'm not sure if this is the right place for this but I'm looking for an easy way not only to track my GPS data while cycling offroad on my phone (many apps can do this of course) but also export it in a useful format and import it into different apps or project it on various maps (Google Maps/Earth, OSM, etc.) so I can easily navigate to these routes after not going there for a while and share the routes with friends.
Can you help me out with this one?
Hi, i'm trying to find out if i need to buy a dedicated GPS device for hiking in national parks in UK. Mobile phone signal is non existant in remote areas. Are dedicated handheld devices or watches more accurate than mobile phones?
Thanks.
