GOT Minecraft status

As most of you are aware, this project has died. With the successful project WesterosCraft, it is regrettably time we put the final nail in the coffin of gotminecraft. The website has been taken down. The minecraft server has long been taken offline, and now the subreddit has been restricted. No posts have been deleted, but no new posts can be made.

As stated above, if you are still interested in building Westeros in Minecraft, please check out WesterosCraft.

Shameless plug warning: If you are interested in a more PVP/war setting in minecraft, check out Minecraft-Wars

A Suggestion

I have a great idea for how to make the map. With the program worldpainter, you can very easil create large landmasses and very nice looking mountains. Here is a large map of Europe that I made, and I think that this would be a great way to make the map.

Just a friendly reminder that the gotminecraft forums exist!

While we are waiting for the new map to be ready, I think it would be a good idea to use the GOTminecraft forums to discuss ideas for future projects or ideas for the server in general. This is a much more organized way of discussing the project than posting to this subreddit.

For example, I have posted this thread to express my thoughts about copying structures from the old map to the new. Check it out and respond if you have something to say.

If we want the project to actually be successful this time around, communication is vital.

Also, as you may know, you can still log into the server at address gotminecraft.com, and check out the old map. Many of the warp locations are back now, too.

Still not happy with some of the terrain in the new map - we will be reopening the with the old map while I clean up some of the issues and re-render

Basically what it says in the title - unfortunately there are still a few issues with consistency in the terrain to clean up - while we wait for this, we will re-open with the old map so we can see some of the old work, save some of it, and start testing different ideas for the new map

I'll keep you posted on progress

In anticipation of the launch, I made the High Hall of the Arryns!

youtube link Be sure to turn annotations on!

The Eyrie is one of the projects I'm most interested in getting off the ground, so I figured I'd start by making the High Hall on my own.

It would be nice to eventually incorporate this into the server - if you guys like it. Feel free to comment & criticize!

New Possibilities

With the implementation of an increased height limit to 256, there are so many new possibilities for a GoT themed map. High towers and keeps would be achievable without considerable effort in lowering the terrain. The epic mountains of the Vale would be much easier to terraform and there would be a lot more room to work with. The Wall could be twice the size that we had before, dwarfing Castle Black as it should, and would be much more intimidating.

Season 2 of HBO's Game Of Thrones is approaching in April, and with it will come more interest in this idea and an influx of people to this subreddit. We could capitalize on this and gain much needed momentum to get the project started again, or we could simply give up, as many have already done.

The future of this server depends on someone with the ability to render a bigger map of Westeros. I believe that's what would get us started again and everything else would fall into place. If you know how to do this and you have the time, message Sleelin about it (You can find him in the Moderators section).

I've yet to give up hope for this server since I only see one big step between us and our goal. The problems we face can easily be beaten as long as the people are committed and willing to work. Keep this subreddit active, post ideas you have or builds that could be used on the server. If you don't want this to fail, do something about it. Our goal isn't that far out of reach when look it, all that's needed is a little effort.

I run a GoT faction themed medieval server if anyone is interested.

etrith.hopto.org

Each one of the main cities is controlled by a faction fro ASOIAF. Lannister, Tully, Baratheon, Targaryen, and Dothraki is a faction. We are looking for players who have actually read the books to make more GoT factions. It's fun stuff :)

EDIT: Now that the server is basically all redditors I have made a Etrith Subreddit. http://www.reddit.com/r/etrith/

Where do I sign up?

GoT and Minecraft are pretty much my two favourite things in the world. I really want to contribute to this project, but I am confused if it is even still active and where the actual server is. If someone could respond to this that would be great.

We need to figure out what we're going to do.

First off, I'd like for all Project Managers and Moderators/Administrators who read this to check-in on this thread to let everyone know you're still with us along with some additional information about your current status and if you're still available. (I encourage anyone else who wouldn't mind checking in to do the same.)

Alright, no doubt many of you are wondering what's going on, myself included. To be honest, I'm not sure which direction this server is going at the moment, but it isn't looking very good. So we need to discuss some things here.

The map is probably the biggest reason as to why the server is so inactive at the moment. For one, Notch has switched directions around in Minecraft, North will now be West I believe. So we have that to worry about in 1.0 once we get updated. Also, many believe the map is much too small, and would be more like a museum rather than an accurate recreation of Westeros when it's completed. Due to this problem, many of us have agreed that we could use a much bigger map and would be willing to wait a few weeks for a new map to render. Unfortunately, mvd366 has stated that he's too busy to write up a program for the re-render. So if you have experience writing programs like these and would be willing to try to do this for us we would be forever in your debt. Also, I'd imagine Sleenin is running low on donation money to keep the server going. So if you have some cash to spare please consider making a donation (link on the right side of the page).

Anyways, that's all I have to say. Let me know if I missed something. And again, if you have any experience writing programs let us know if you would be willing to render a new map for the server. If anyone has ANYTHING else to say please do so, I hope to see some discussion down below.

server update?

I am new to the server (submitted an application and have yet to hear back) but am really interested in it. it is a great idea! I was just wondering if there where any plans to update the server to 1.0.0. If so then when, if not then why not? -nick

The Wall and Beyond.

As a builder in the North, I have heard that our PM has abandoned the project.

I was assigned the Castle of Eastwatch... But I have no direction and design to go from.

He also gave me the task of designing it, so I my task would be a bit easier if I could get architect permissions to do so with.

Further, I have a few ides for the western castle as well, if it wouldn't bother anyone.

If we could get a PM, or even a mod for some direction I would be most appreciative. Thank you. :)

new applications

A few people have been coming on the server lately, and they were wondering when their application would be accepted. Also I think what we need to get this project going, aside from a re-render is starting a youtube channel and to post videos that track our progress. Hopefully that will spark some attention and we can get more people applying.

Server Re-Render and progressing forwards/I am still committed to this and I know others are as well

Soo it seems like many people are in favor of a re-rendering of the server that would just make it larger in terms of scale (thinking 3 times larger but don't know how feasible this is) and removing the shallow water terrain problem. Having overall less jagged terrain would be nice as well.

I am writing this thread not because I am making a demand but because I think this could reignite a lot of the motivation to work on things and really would love to see this through to some level of completion. Some have said that this could take 2-4 weeks and I am perfectly willing to wait as I know several others are.

If this re-rendering of the server is going to happen several things need to occur in terms of saving the content we have already created. Personally I think we can just copy paste everything with world edit and put it somewhere in a designated area near the spawn for easy transfer. Alternatively we can save a copy of the structures and geographic work we have done on another server. I will not pretend to know enough about the logistics of this to handle the whole operation but I know how to copy paste...and that's a start...

Anyways upvote if you guys wanna do this and give me your comments on any opinions or things you think I am not thinking about.

Thanks

Where is everyone at?

The last couple weeks or so there has been little to no one on the server. I think at most I saw five people on at one time? So where is everyone at? It's kind of sad to be honest, building isn't fun at all when no one else is on. We need to do something to get this server going again, any suggestions?

Suggestion for faster progress

My friend was suggesting and it might be a good idea, if we all work on one city or region together then move on to the next one. It might help projects that doesn't really have enough people right now and would ensure that those people who are actively playing get to do something worthwhile with their time.

Personally I would be ok with this if others are, I don't know what the overall sentiment of everyone is though.

The server is too small.

After navigating the majority of the server over the past couple of days, I've started to realize that the server is nowhere near as big as I originally thought it was as far as land size goes. It took me less then fifteen minutes to navigate from the Vale to the Twins by foot, around five minutes to navigate from one end of the wall to the other and around five minutes to walk from kings landing to Harrenhal. Furthermore, the size of Dragonstone and the iron isles is well.. old wyk is barely the size of Castle Black. The isles in their entirety combined are about the size of Winterfell, if even that. The wall is barely long enough to fit ten normal sized castles beneath and even then they'll be scrunched up next to one another.

I just thought this was an issue that I'd put right out there. Is there any way Westeros can increase in land size? Is there any way to fix this at all? Because if not, I'm afraid that the server is not going to be an expansive world, but simply a gallery of landmarks.

I am set as a builder for Winterfell but wasn't sure what needs to be built. I don't want to got screwing up anything. If something needs to be planned out or drawn up just let me know. (It is what I do for a living...be an architect)

I don't want to step on anyone's toes just offering my services. If it would be better to help out in another region, just let me know and I will be more than happy to help out.

Just let me know and I am glad to be apart of this.

The Twins

Here is an album of the work myself (SavageWTF) and Libra000 have been doing on The Twins: http://imgur.com/a/nivKQ#s5fEk.

I am not going to be able to long on for some time (could be days, could be weeks). That being said, we need some help filling in the vast amounts of empty space we have left. Anyone with a creative eye can jump in. We need things like armories, rookeries, stables, various residences, courtyards, etc. Try to keep the style somewhat consistent, though not so grand that it overwhelms the main towers. Only build in the side where the Sept is, and then we will copy past the creations to the other side. If you have any questions, ask Libra000 in game, or just go with it, and if it isn't right we will work together later to fix it. I hope to see some cool things when I get back.

Issues with "Shallow Water" Terrain

I'm sure most of you already know that the map generated the shallow water on the coast as actual terrain. But I know some of you don't, just a few minutes ago I had to fix an area outside King's Landing that was completely flat, but was actually supposed to be an inlet of water. I realized this because when I was looking at the dynamic map, luckily for me that area hadn't updated yet and showed the water where it was supposed to be. So I was easily able to outline the area using the map as my guide, and then filled it with water.

My point is, if we want this map accurate coast wise, then we need to remove these areas so that the actual coast line is seen. It's fairly easy to spot these areas that aren't supposed to be there. They will be much much taller then the surrounding lands, just like rivers and roads.

So, if you are a terraformer in any region and you are working on the coast, make sure to clear those chunks that shouldn't be there. It would help if you used the dynamic map as your guide for this since it is fairly easy to spot what needs to be gone, the "shallow water" shows up as very light green terrain. I will provide an example below of The Fingers where you can easily see what should be water, but isn't.
