Good post for newbies on how to keep your water quality in tip top shape

I bought 5 feeder goldfish 2 weeks ago and they were in ROUGH shape. A few people on this sub gave me some great advice to give them the best chance. I am happy to say they are doing so much better. 3 of them seemed like they could die any day. They still have some healing to do and I will do my best to keep them alive so they can flourish. I am assuming this guys scales changed from orange to this bronze due to all the stress and fin damage. I know people are going to say ammonia burns but I have been testing my water everyday and I haven’t seen any traces of ammonia. Does anyone here know if this is normal after a fish has been through a lot? And will he stay this color or can he go back to his orange color?
After around 15 years of keeping mainly tropical they had all withered off and died so my two goldfish made the move to my old tropical tank.
The white one is around 15 years old or more,I’ve had them since I was a young teen.
Added a few new fancies to the mix and there’s my one remaining featherfin synodontis (the only surviving tropical) who is pretty chill and hangs out with my goldfish
Little buddy at LFS. So many pretty babies, but little pal here was reading to chomp on that finger! And I love that kind of personality...Oh I want to go back so bad 💔
I have a 20-gallon tank with two fantail goldfish. I am aware that 20 gallons is not enough, but I compensate with weekly 50% water changes. The rules of my apartment state that I can't have a tank larger than 20 gallons. I use a dual sponge filter and have only one artificial plant in the tank.
So with comets, and most other fish species, I can easily tell if the fish is fat or not. But fancies are shaped in such a way that I struggle. They always have compacted bellies due to their breeding... so they all kinda look fat just from the way their internal organs sit.
They're not bloated or pineconing or anything, they seem to be healthy, happy fish. I know they're definitely not underweight, but whether they're a good weight or overweight I have no clue!
When I type into google "how to tell if my fancy goldfish is fat" it just shows me a bunch of cases of pineconing... which that's edema from organ failure, not fat.
So is there like a body scale chart for fancy goldies?
So I’ve been dreaming about a pair of ranchus for a while now and I’m almost about to order them. I’ve got a 45 gallon tank, 7.4 ph, 74°F, Cycled tank, sand substrate, and live plants. I also accidentally bought Hikari staple for koi instead of goldfish so is that a problem?
I’m basically looking to know if I’m missing anything important to know before getting the little guys.
Ammo 0, Nitrite, 0, Nitrate 10ppm.
His left pectoral fin start to curl couple of month ago. Now all of the sudden his tail fin start to have tear on his tail Fin. No sharp ornament in the tank. His behaviour does not change, no lethargic, still eating and swimming as usual. Have anyone had this issue before?
What treatment should I give him?
Should I separate this goldfish from the others? This one continues to chase the others around, mainly the one in this video but it will chase the others as well. Usually with the others it happens when feeding, this one it chases around pretty frequently for about 5 minutes at a time and multiple times per day. It was the first fish we got in the tank and it was a little larger than a few of the other goldfish we added later. We’ve had 3 others die since we set up the tank, it was cycled for a month beforehand, and I’m thinking he might’ve been the culprit.
If anyone is in Brisbane, there are lots of oranda babies that will be for sale next month 😊 300 of them to be exact 😁
She’s been in the hospital tank for dropsy treatment for a week now. I was about to get her ready to join her siblings in the main tank but then I noticed her eyes to be like this. Her dropsy has gotten better but now I’m dealing with this.
What do I do? Also she’s started to grow some black spots. I assume it’s ammonia burns? I change her water once a day while in quarantine.
I’ve had this goldfish for about 1.5 years now and it amazes me that he has sill survived. When I first got him he was probably .5 inches long, and I got him with 5 other goldfish for 13 cents each. I put them all in the same tank and over there period of 1 week, they all died except for him. He has now lived for 1.5 years in the same 3 gallon tank for this time with no water changes at all, seriously. I feed him once every three days, currently goldfish flakes, but for 5 months it was only chopped spinach once a week. Yes he does have a filtration system, but there is no filter so it just circulates the water. He’s now about three inches long and looks and seems completely normal and healthy. Am I just a bad goldfish owner or is this completely normal?
hey this is my first time posting to reddit so sorry for bad formatting lol
i've had this goldfish for around a year , he's perfectly healthy and has grown a bit, but i've seen a lot of people saying that his growth is going to be stunted in a 10 gallon tank. i live in a small apartment and can't get a bigger tank, so if this is true i'll return him to the seller and get a better suited fish.
once again, i've seen no health issues in him. the only issue i've had is that his water would get really dirty really quick but i added plants and changed the water more frequently and have had no more issues.
if it is the case i need to return him, can someone give me a recommendation for a fish that works well with plants and can live happily in a 10 gallon tank??? tysm
Currently only have jungle Valisaneria and frogbit on the way.
The white one gives off boy energy. The gold one gives off girl. Idk they just do.
I had just scraped the sides which is why things look stirred up.
I’m not entirely worried about it but I was wondering if I should be (I had 3 mystery snails in my tank btw)
I know telescope is not everyone’s favorite but you can’t deny the beauty of this fish. Bowl is for viewing only.
