The General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) is a North American land-mobile FM UHF radio service designed for short-distance two-way communication. It requires a license in United States but can be used license-free in Canada. The United States permits use by an adult individual who possesses a valid GMRS license, as well as his or her immediate family members. Immediate relatives of the GMRS system licensee are entitled to communicate among themselves for personal or business purposes, but employees of the licensee, who are not family members, are not covered by the same license.

Any individual in the United States who is at least 18 years of age and not a representative of a foreign government may apply for a GMRS license by completing the application form (either on paper or through the FCC's Universal Licensing System) and paying the license fee (currently $70.00). No exam is required. A license for a GMRS system is now issued for a 10-year term as of 2018.
The license extends privileges of the primary licensee to include communications with the licensee's immediate family members, and authorizes immediate family members to use the licensee's station(s) to conduct the activities of the licensee. Additionally, the FCC rules allow GMRS licensees to communicate with other GMRS licensees. GMRS licensees are allowed to communicate with FRS users on those frequencies that are shared between the two services.

Just got the gm-15 pro and was wondering if I could listen to ham. Also, if anyone knows any good repeaters around Central Indiana area let me know!
I just picked up a set of Baofeng UV-5G Pro radios to use as walkie talkies for doing disaster relief work and such. I'm curious, are these new radios able to be "unlocked" for all frequencies? I've read that in the past, they used to come unlocked from the factory, but the FCC put pressure on these companies to start locking them down. I just want to be able to communicate with Ham radios during emergencies. Or should I just pick up a few Ham radios instead?
There's a repeater in my area on 462.675 but throughout the day I'll pick up chatter from a business somewhere nearby. I think it's either a car dealership or a train station, I'm really not sure as I have both of those nearby. Also Morse code will come through occasionally but I can't tell what it's saying. Anyways, is there any way I could filter that out? Would setting a receive tone work? I've been doing this for less than a week so I'm sorry if this is a dumb question.
Threw a few HTs on/into this bag along with charging block, cords, and antennas before heading out to the ranch. Put them on different repeater channels to see which ones I could receive out there.
I stumbled on this and figured I'd share. You can type in either a ham or GMRS call sign and it will populate the other. I'll be posting this in another sub too.
Radio started smoking last night while i was transmitting on a local gmrs repeater, i opened it up and found this...can anyone tell me what it might be? Its a btech UV50X2 Gen 2, i just got it brand new on 11/29 and that was the first time really transmitting and it was only for a few seconds at a time.
So, while out and about hiking with my new gmrs radio, would it be possible and beneficial to have a cable connecting the radio with an antenna higher up on my body that could also be larger, like Boba Fett
the only one i've found is an oxbow renegade x for around $150. i'm not a serious user, mostly talking to the wife on the motorcycle. i'm a little surprised something like a baofeng doesn't have that. i wouldn't think it's that hard to add a bluetooth chip
any recommendations for a radio?
please / thank you
Hey all, trying to reach out to get on some repeaters in Central Jersey, I've tried the repeaters websites but I never get any responses, any help would be appreciated
I'm currently using a Wouxun KG-1000G plus and a Wouxun ANO-050G NMO mount antenna. The antenna is tuned for GMRS frequencies 462-467 mhz. I would like to monitor local fire/EMS and skywarn frequencies in the 108-179 mhz range. Do I need an antenna that is tuned for dual frequency, similar to a HAM antenna?
Will a hard mount perform any better than a magnet mount antenna? I want to get another radio for my pickup, wich already has a CB with a hard mount antenna that may get replaced. Would a hard mount be any better or does it matter?
Anyone know of any deals available on the Midland GXT67 Pro?
Need some help I have a baofeng gm-21 and trying to talk to a buddy on a retevis rt68, I can get there transmit but when I transmit to them they can’t hear anything. I have set the freq and ctcss on the transmit still nothing.
This is a Kenwood TK-372G commercial business band radio. I just got it on eBay and it had 3 channels on 469 MHz programmed in. I just reprogrammed it for GMRS. This radio has dual part 90 and 95A type acceptance so it is legal for GMRS.
I have a buddy building and outdoor gun range and they want to use GMRS radios to talk on a large 22 acre property. If all users are licensed under GMRS, can they use a small repeater? Or would they need a business license?
Buying two UV9Gs and want to use them for snowmobile helmet communicators. There's plenty of helmet speakers with a regular 3.5mm lead that could plug into a speaker mic, but the ptt ergos and the mic dont seem like they'd work well when operating a snowmobile. I'd like to avoid VOX but I understand that trying to run a handlebar PTT isn't a practical option. I'm not deadset on the UV9G, I have had an ip65 radio die in the past tho due to water, so ip67 is a must. But if there's any radios out there that have an out-the-box helmet solution I'd consider it.
Hey guys I am new to gmrs radios, I do have radio experience from being in the military I just got a baofeng gm-21. What are the first steps I should take?
So I’m building a manpack and can’t decide on how I’m going to build a ground plane. It would need to be foldable if all possible. I would only need to use the ground plane if I didn’t have a vehicle close by. Maybe if I was in the woods on a hike or out hunting or camping.
I'm trying to decided between the UV5G plus or the tidradio td-h3 for gmrs
I am getting a mxt275 with the 3db HD bullbar antenna for my land cruiser. Initially I was going to put the antenna on my front steel bumper, and the radio unit in the center console or glove box. Now I am consdering putting the antenna on my rear bumper.
I read that the radio should be close to the antenna, so I was thinking of mounting the radio in the rear storage area, and running extensions for the mic up to the front of the vehicle, hidden under the trim. Will this cause issues for the mic? Should I just install the antenna on the front of the vehicle?
I’m completely new to radios and need some advice. I’m looking to buy a set of walkie-talkies to use while hunting with my brother. After some research, I’ve narrowed it down to two options: the Rocky Talkie and the BTECH Pro.
My primary use will be basic communication over a distance of max 4 miles. The terrain is mostly flat and wooded, no major hills.
Which one would you recommend for my situation? Or is there another option I should consider?
Edit: Thanks to everyone for their input and advice just bought two rocky talkies cant wait to use them.
I’m new to gmrs as I just recently received my license. I’m considering those two radios. I like the idea that the h3 can also be used as a ham, if I decide to get my license it would be nice to have a single device. I can’t seem to find as much info on the h8. Is it also ham compatible? I’d ideally like that on top of the water resistance it has. Is it also chirp compatible?
So I’m building this out as we speak and the only thing I lack is the antenna. What do you think I should use?
So I put away all my GMRS gear 2021ish and promply forgot some of it's (and my purchasing...) shortcomings...
I'm debating on even replacing the KG1000. If my HT is working just fine I'm not sure what I want a base station for. I would like better simplex capabilities for fun/family comms in an emergency so maybe an antenna adapter and a mounted base station GMRS tuned external antenna for use with my HT. I have two of the KG-905G's and for the other one I have a Melowave bandit G on order. If I can make simplex contact with those across about 9 miles of urban terrain here I'd be golden. I was getting up to about mile 7 before, we'll see with the new antennas.
Not sure what I'd replace the KG1000G with. My 905's are fantastic, but the Midlands get abused and they work 100% of the time everytime. I hate that they seem "dumbed down" but they have been a more reliable base station at this point. Daily use for 5ish years....
I guess that's it - my advice is to ditch the stock rubber ducky antennas if you want more out of your KG905's and don't think you're going crazy if no one wants to talk to you on your near-new KG1000. Actually pretty disappointed it went out so quickly.
Hey radioheads, I seek the wisdom of the experienced. I'm looking into making a mobile base for my jeep GC, currently I'm thinking about getting the Btech UV-50X2 and a nagoya UT- 77. Currently I already have my license for GMRS and callsign and plan on getting my Ham as well so with that in mind is this something that would work? My main purpose is mainly just to talk to other radio folks as well as a few friends and to just be experienced with it so if I ever end up in a bad situation I'll know how to make what I got work for me. Also I have power supply questions too like, how would I power this in the car? Would a cigarette lighter port be enough? I worry about those little components overheating. I'm going with the mag mount due to not liking the idea of drilling holes in my car, is there a hood bolt antenna that would work better?
Since my GMRS license can be used by y family members I was thinking of sending my daughter in San Francisco a Tidradio H3 to take when she goes hiking. My question is this... Is there a common GMRS channel used for emergency calls? Would she just use one of the repeater channels 15 to 22 to try to call for help? Any insight would be most appreciated. TIA
