What is GMRS?

The General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) is a North American land-mobile FM UHF radio service designed for short-distance two-way communication. It requires a license in United States but can be used license-free in Canada. The United States permits use by an adult individual who possesses a valid GMRS license, as well as his or her immediate family members. Immediate relatives of the GMRS system licensee are entitled to communicate among themselves for personal or business purposes, but employees of the licensee, who are not family members, are not covered by the same license.

Licensing

General

Any individual in the United States who is at least 18 years of age and not a representative of a foreign government may apply for a GMRS license by completing the application form (either on paper or through the FCC's Universal Licensing System) and paying the license fee (currently $70.00). No exam is required. A license for a GMRS system is now issued for a 10-year term as of 2018.

Family

The license extends privileges of the primary licensee to include communications with the licensee's immediate family members, and authorizes immediate family members to use the licensee's station(s) to conduct the activities of the licensee. Additionally, the FCC rules allow GMRS licensees to communicate with other GMRS licensees. GMRS licensees are allowed to communicate with FRS users on those frequencies that are shared between the two services.

Unlocking db25-g from radioddity.

I’ve followed the password change procedure to “unlock” on VFO mode. It went smoothly but it literally changed nothing. I want to be able to transmit on the MURS channels. Anyone have another solution? Just beeps every time trying to Tx. Surprised no one has found a way to just completely unlock it entirely

BTECH mobile GMRS 20v2 rookie questions

Greetings everyone, this is a question for people in the know about the BTech gmrs 20v2 20W mobile.

I received a BTech gmrs 20v2 mobile radio in the mail and have a few questions. Complete newbie. I have it powered up in the truck and wired to the antenna, magnetically affixed to the roof and am receiving sound from different channels. I have three dumb questions:

  1. do I have to do something to activate the orange button? Pressing it does not allow me to change volume, nor does pressing and holding it allow me to turn it off.
  2. does it run on a battery charge when not plugged in?
  3. what the heck is “programming” it and what does it do? I have the cable that goes to usb.

Like I said, complete newbie. Thanks for any guidance.

Dead battery

I have a 40 watt Midland MXT400, and it's direct wired to the truck battery. I parked the truck sunday afternoon, and Wednesday evening the battery was completely dead. I'm not sure that I didn't leave the radio turned on, or if I turned it off. Is that radio (not scanning) enough to completely drain a battery in 3 days?

Or do I need to look for another issue with the truck?

Beginner w/ Tidradio H3 - Trouble Programming Repeater

Hi everyone! Apologies if this been asked millions of times before; I tried searching and couldn’t find an answer that fit my needs.

I just got my Tidradio H3 from the Amazons.

I’m trying to connect to a few repeaters in my area. One of them, just as an example is on:

-Frequency: 462.650 -Input Tone: 065 DPL -Output Tone: 650 DPL

I’m on Channel 27/Rptr 5, and I’m seeing the correct frequency.

On menu option 12 Tx DCS I’ve got “065N” selected

For Rx DCS I’ve got “Off” selected

From my reading, I feel like these are the correct settings.

But when I key up the repeater I get… nothing.

I’ve tried it inside and outside my home.

And I’ve tried different repeaters (on different channels with different tones) to the same result.

Anyone have any suggestions on what I’m doing wrong?

Frequency Question

Hi everyone.

I own a Tidradio H3 and H8. I see on the specs that in "UNLOCKED" mode, they are able to transmit at frequencies outside of the GMRS as well as HAM bands.

Now I know that this isn't legal per the FCC, but just for curiosity's sake, if myself and a buddy were to transmit simplex outside of the "legal" range, is that doable? Thinking more for an emergency and the standard frequencies are all jammed up with traffic. The H8 unlocked is capable of 400 - 520 MHz as per the website.

Disclaimer - I know this technically isn't legal, just curious if this would "work".

Thanks in advance!!!

GMRS, FRS and pre-teens

Newbie here with an odd question.

My wife and I have two kiddos who are getting older and wanting to spend more time out and about with friends. My wife wants to buy them phones and I’m not wanting to do that (paranoid dad with no intention of having my daughter texting boys).

My idea is to buy them GMRS radios that can be turned on after school and they will be allowed to communicate with us that way.

These will also be used for hunting and back country activities.

Radios are more durable and cheaper than cellphones with monthly plans.

Has anyone here done this? Should I go with FRS instead? Or am I just being weird…

Community emergency network

I live in a small (-100 households) and well organized community. After the recent tornados and hurricanes in my area, neighbors, knowing that I’m a ham, have asked advice on radios for emergency communications. While I have gotten a couple of folks on the path to a ham license, it’s not for everyone I have encouraged neighbors to purchase inexpensive GMRS radios and to get licensed for that service. So far, I know of about 30 new GMRS stations in the neighborhood. I collected donations and have purchased a repeater. We’re currently waiting on parts to refurbish a tower that was donated to the project.

I’m looking for suggestions on operational rules and procedures for the network, and ideas regarding encouraging practice and getting folks comfortable with radio communications.

Coax for Truck / Mobile

Hello Frens -

Looking for a recommendations for a GMRS coax for my truck.

Preferably, something with a removable end to fit thru a small gromet.

I like the concept of the Midland MXTA24, however I purchased a Breedlove Stakehole mount with the NMO mount that I believe has the NMO to SO239 stud - so I do not believe I can utilize this cable (unless the NMO portion is removable?)

https://www.amazon.com/Midland-MXTA24-Antenna-Connector-MicroMobile/dp/B0842B1WFS/ref=sr_1_3?crid=N6UKTNZETJ8H&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.hQW09Oy7z1mBsiMmga867WEYmcPzb8HqK9CkKByuEgJ1DWZi7GUdsGwou1HaFRldXE6ASlPaGvZZxcT38eFHaTYGshYJBw6GwQ1f9uvCmN1kB1bGBwb8VgEuzjCGBsUOhe6iHcEkUcujvDmz8vNVqcuda2IGsO0bES2c9kdzxnQrnZiTg2n6XkW8bw4FaOeqmre_nl7BroaLXHiU4AX6PDJ-NT1fUfa_PM6i2yLwx54.avVfNT55d2Odv0SljOUtHnJj0_fXZVNbp1BU8vlhio0&dib_tag=se&keywords=midland+gmrs+coax&qid=1730220703&sprefix=midland+gmrs+coa%2Caps%2C200&sr=8-3

Would something like this work - with a SMA to SO239 adapter - utilize the skinny SMA end for fishing?

Bay Area Range Question

Greetings everyone,

I got licensed and am exploring GMRS radios. I commute to SF from Berkeley and am wondering about how effectively I can communicate with my family from across the Bay by GMRS. Would 15 watt radios on either side of the Bay work together? From my research, it looks like a big maybe but that it would definitely work with the use of repeaters.

Appreciate all the insight you can provide. Thank you.

Waterproof vehicle mounted radio

I’ve been needing to find a vehicle mounted GMRS radio (NOT a handheld) that’s waterproof for quite some time. Lots of folks recommended the TYT-TH8600WP, but it’s not certified to run GMRS. Any help is appreciated.

Does a portable repeater like a Retevis need a duplexer?

Sorry if this question has been asked on here before. However, I was wondering, do portable repeaters like the Retevis need a duplexer so one antenna can be used to transmit and receive? My buddies are I are looking to build a (relatively) lost cost repeater for our area, as we hunt and loose reception on simplex. We have a few local repeaters in our area that we can still ping in the woods, but we would like to be able to build a low budget repeater ($300-$500 give or take) for the house, for our applications.

Yes, we both possess FCC issued callsigns

Thanks for your help!

I know they’re not GMRS, but are CBs still a thing?

You guys were so informative and helpful on my last post about the cheap cheap “GMRS” radios that my grandmother gave me. Now I’m back with another radio question, though not exactly GMRS related.

Does anybody actually use CB radios anymore? I dug my old radio out from the storage loft. It is even worth the trouble of getting it hooked up?

Rocky Talkie 5 Watt Mic Compatibliltiy

I work at a small ski shop and got the 5 watt for very cheap through a pro deal. I do a lot of backcountry skiing in the winter and typically use a hand mic for ease of use on my shoulder strap.

Was gonna buy the one from rocky talkie themselves but am not too stoked on the $65 price of it. Was curious if the brilliant minds of r/gmrs had any recommendations that are compatible with the radio and also maybe have a volume knob on the hand mic in addition to a push to talk.

A bit new to the gmrs world so thanks for any help you can give me.

New to GMRS, looking for simple to use and works well in the MTNs of NC.

I have been researching these radios but so many out there. I am leaning towards the Midland GXT1000VP4 and also the 50 watt MXT 575. What’s your thoughts on these radios?

Was given these for free….

My grandmother bought these “walkie talkies” for $1 at a garage sale. She gave them to me for my kids to play with. I immediately realized that they’re not toys and knew what they are. Now I’m going down the rabbit hole by getting my GMRS license and beginning to research further development into HAM.

I fully realize these are cheap, cheap radios and likely not repeater compatible, but will they be good enough for brand new beginners? Or will they likely only be good enough to use around our farm?

Repeater Access

Hi, I’m new to all of this and wanted to get some help on if I’m allowed to use a certain repeater or not. My fiancée and I will be doing a ski trip for our honeymoon and cell service has always been iffy for me so I just bought two GMRS radios and want to set them up and found a repeater that is near Steamboat.

When it says “Use: Open” on this website for Sunshine Peak - N0PRG, does that mean anyone can use it? I’m not sure of how to determine what is available to me or not.

https://www.repeaterbook.com/repeaters/details.php?state_id=08&ID=21104

Also, what’s the best bet to find a good flexible low gain antenna? I’ve read that low gain might be better for my application where I won’t always have direct line of sight with trees.

I bought us two Retevis Ailunce HA1G GMRS Radios.

Thanks!!

East-Central Florida

Just getting into GMRS and wondering if anyone is up to test repeaters and chit chat about gear around the Space coast and treasure coast. I'm in Palm bay but can probably shoot a signal up to Viera and all the way down to fort drum or fort pierce. Rest of my stuff for vehicle mounting is arriving on Monday, but super curious to see if anyone is in Palm Bay, Melbourne, Grant, Viera, Rockledge, West Melbourne, Sebastian, Fellsmere, Vero Beach, Merrit Island, Indian harbor beach, Indiatlantic and ecetera to talk to.
