Shopping Service Needed for Antique Store Please

Hello! There is an Antique Store in Gloucester that has something I have been trying to buy for a while, however the owner is having a hard time shipping it to me. I was wondering if someone would be so kind as to let me pay for their gas and time to pick it up for me and ship it to me? (I would be paying the store directly for the item, and reimbursing you for shipping, gas, and time.) It is something I have been trying to find for over a decade and I would be super grateful if anyone would be open to helping me! It is not furniture but a larger item so a bit heavy. Please DM me if you are interested and thank you!

Quite pleased to see there's a Gloucester Reddit! In San Diego now, but just came back for a visit. Good to be back for a bit. I lurk from time to time to check in on the Gloucester happenings.

Bubba Ward, local country singer, to perform in NN May 11th

Bubba Ward, a local country singer who has been making some small waves on facebook, etc, will be performing at "The Hootie", over in Newport News at City Center.

He does a lot of covers, but has this original song 'My Ol' Man': https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=24QL4CdtnQE

Changed Posting Ability from Restricted to Public | Gloucester County, Virginia Subreddit News

Gloucester County, Virginia Subreddit Community Update from the Moderator April 26, 2024

As the moderator of this Subreddit, various priorities in my life precipitated my moderation of the Gloucester County, Virginia subreddit but I will be more active here in the coming days and months.

Having been a Gloucester County native (born elsewhere but having moved to Gloucester at a young age), I believe in helping to spread positive and fair light about Gloucester; taking in as people wish to share and employing fair principle in allowing free dialogue & expression with respect to people's sensibilities.

With that being said, I did not realize posting here with Restricted and I have taken the liberty of changing the posting ability from Restricted to Public. I will do my best to be semi-active here as circumstances allow.

In adherence to the timeless principles of dignity and respect, it is imperative to emphasize that expressions of hate speech and vitriol have no place within our community discourse. While our platform encourages the exchange of a multitude of viewpoints regarding Gloucester County, it must be unequivocally stated that any form of hate speech or vitriol will not be tolerated. We firmly uphold the values of inclusivity, mutual respect, and constructive dialogue, fostering an environment where all individuals feel free to express themselves fairly without fear of retribution.

Hate speech and vitriol will not be tolerated.

Thank you all for taking the time to read this and I look forward to sharing more sights, sounds, events, constructive dialogue, and musings regarding Gloucester County, Virginia in the coming days, months, and years. Have a great day.

Do you, your parents, or grandparents know anything about old schools on the Middle Peninsula?

I'm an archaeologist working in Gloucester, VA whose dissertation project is looking at late 19th and early 20th century schoolhouses in Gloucester, Mathews, and Middlesex Counties. Unfortunately much of the information about these schools, especially black schools, has not recorded, including their locations. We have many photos labeled by county but with no more detailed locational information. I am going to be excavating a handful of these schools, but this will only be a very small percentage and they need to be contextualized.

While myself and some of the community organizations I am working with are going to be hosting days later this year for people to bring in any information, pictures, or oral histories they may have and advertise in the Gazette-Journal and the local radio station, I also wanted to reach out and see if anyone on reddit may have had a family member who went to school in these counties before school consolidation (so basically pre-1945) or any family stories/photos. Especially as so many people have moved away from these counties in the past hundred years. I am particularly interested if they had any stories, photos, or other information that could help, even just a school name and general location within the county.

So far, I have been able to locate 47 schools in Gloucester between 1871 and 1960 and 26 during the same time period in Middlesex, but there are many many that we have no names for, no locations for, or basically no information on.

All of my results will be made public and published, so if I have any luck getting information on reddit, I will make sure to share my final products on here.

If you have information but are hesitant to share over reddit, feel free to PM me and I can provide more details about myself, the groups I am working with, and my project. Thank you!

Best way to let you know events at Belle Isle??

I am the PR and Marketing Manager for Virginia State Parks. My region includes Belle Isle State Park in Lancaster. What is the best way--publication, web, facebook page, place to post flyers to let people in the area know what is going on at the park. They offer guided hikes, kayak trips, kid's programs, birding workshops. I live in Virginia Beach so I'm not as familiar with the Northern Neck area. Any advice would be appreciated
