Be aware - El Roble Park

A word of caution to anyone who visits or lives near El Roble Park. Yesterday I was walking the dogs from Wren into El Roble Park near the playground shortly before 9:30a. I was headed on the dirt path toward the corner and I discovered a man laying on his back on the grass berm, writhing around. At first I thought he was hurt but then I realized he had unzipped his pants, undone his belt, and was masturbating.

I immediately yelled at him to stop, what the hell was he doing? That there were children playing in the park (there was a woman with two children on the swings), and that school is across the field. I then called police. He got up, zipped up his pants, buckled his belt, and quickly walked away past the tennis courts towards Santa Theresa.

I spoke with an officer who said they had several units patrolling the neighborhood looking for the man. I checked the police website last night - it was recorded as “Indecent Exposure” but it appears they didn’t find him.

I was about 50 yards from him, but this is what I saw: Hispanic male, late 20s-30s, thin build, dark hair, with longer bangs. Wearing a dark navy windbreaker jacket or pullover (like a thin Anorak), blue jeans, and sneakers. Last seen walking past the tennis courts to Santa Theresa.

Please keep an eye out and stay safe!

Is Parkside Manor a good place to live?

Hello. Me (28m) and my wife (28f) are newly weds and are looking for a place with a monthly rent of under $2k. We came across Parkside Manor through zillow.com. This is the address: Parkside Manor, 8587 Church St, Gilroy, CA 95020.

I would just like to ask around, how was it living in Parkside Manor and is it generally a good place to live? Thank you in advance.

Gilroy Garden Deals or Promo Codes?

Does anyone have any Gilroy Gardens promo codes to use for a discount? Or somewhere I can purchase at a price lower than the $65/day price for 1 ticket?

I dont live nearby so am only planning to purchase single day tickets instead of for the year.

I see a deal for Sunday, May 5th, but I won't be in that area any longer.

Anyone know of any other promo codes to discount one day admission?

Best mechanic in Gilroy?

My car(2012 Prius) is eating up oil and haven't been able to figure out why. Looking for a mechanic that'll fix it up well and not over-charge me to give it a look. Y'all have any suggestions for best places to go?

Food to check out

We usually restrict our Gilroy visits to Gilroy Gardens. Been wanting to go to the Garlic Festivals but it got permanently canceled before I ever did. What place do you recommend we check out for dinner that features garlic dishes? Best place for garlic ice cream?

Edit: Tried out West Side Grill. Their Garlic Festival Pasta was yummy but this place was a splurge for this mama on a budget. 😅

We got a pass so we’ll be back for some more food adventures. Please keep the recs coming! 😁 Thank you!

Gilroy Gardens Value+ vs Premium Membership

Hello. Anyone has the passes for their families? I was thinking of saving money by buying myself the Premium and the Value+ for the other 2 in my family. Not sure it’s worth paying $40 more for everyone. The only thing we want from the Premium would have been the Halloween and Winter events but since we live further away, we would be going once each anyway. Does the Value+ get you discounts to special events?

Lease Ending; No Apartment Lined Up

As title says, lease ending March 31st with no new apartment lined up. Dozens of applications filled with a few, “We’ll let you know by the end of the week.”

Father and I both work, but his credit is pretty bad. We have two boys in early high school who need somewhere to sleep. Primarily just them three at least.

Anyone willing to go week to week on a guesthouse or something for $500 until we can hear back from apartments we’re waiting from?

Thank you!

DUI and Weapons Arrest Leads to Discovery of a Dangerous Natural Gas Buildup Within a Residence

Mass Shooting adverted in Santa Clara County School

On February 28, 2024, at approximately 4:25 a.m., Gilroy Police Department responded to the report of a hit and run accident near Mantelli Drive and Wren Avenue. Upon arrival, officers discovered that a vehicle had collided with several parked cars and fled the scene. The driver, later identified as Markus Beck (46), was located and apprehended by law enforcement still seated in his vehicle a short distance away. While contacting Beck, officers discovered a loaded firearm in the driver’s compartment and later found a loaded AR-15 style rifle in the trunk. Both firearms were registered to Beck.

Beck was found to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision. As a result, Beck was arrested on multiple charges, including driving under the influence (DUI), hit-and-run, and illegal storage of firearms.

Two days prior, Beck entered the office at Luigi Aprea Elementary School to contact a female staff member who he believed worked there. School staff followed district protocols and asked Beck to leave the campus. Beck left the office then loitered around the perimeter of the school. Once again, school staff directed him to leave then notified the Gilroy Police Department. Officers contacted Beck at his residence a short distance away and he was advised to stay away from the school.

Based on Beck’s actions over February 26 and 28th, officers obtained a gun violence restraining order to seize any additional firearms and ammunition and went to Beck’s residence in the 9200 block of Mockingbird Lane. Upon arrival, it was discovered that a gas stove had been emitting gas within the residence, posing a significant risk of fire or explosion. Gilroy Fire Department and PG&E responded, and secured the residence, rendering it safe. This caused the brief lockdown of Luigi Aprea Elementary School and the evacuation of neighboring homes.

Quick action by emergency responders ensured the situation was brought under control, with no injuries or property damage reported. The Gilroy Police Department emphasizes its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of our community. Incidents involving intoxicated drivers and illegal possession of firearms pose serious threats to public safety, and swift action was taken to address this matter. Beck is currently in custody at Santa Clara County Jail. The Gilroy Police Department urges anyone with information regarding this incident to contact Detective Jason Greathead at (408) 846-0373.

Looking for a late night bar to bring leftover wedding party to

Having a wedding in March, looking for a place to bring the leftover crowd, probably 20-30 people. We will be getting out around 10-10:30, hoping to find a place that stays open around 1-2 if possible. Is this a realistic possibility?

Best Pizza?

Hi, my girlfriend and I are staying at an Airbnb near Gilroy/San Martin/Morgan Hill soon for our anniversary. Pizza is kind of "our thing" and I was wondering what people like nearby. From the research I've done, Pinocchio's and My Pizza seem to be local favorites, but I'd love more opinions. Thanks!!

ALSO: my girlfriend is vegetarian so any meat pizzas are (sadly) out of the question

I'm covering Gilroy as a reporter for The Mercury News. What should I report on?

Hi all, I'm Luis, the South Santa Clara County reporter for the Mercury News. I've been living in Gilroy for the last couple of months and have covered topics ranging from the inaugural La Ofrenda Festival to staffing shortages in Gilroy's fire department and disputes over parklets.

Is there anything else coming up that I should know about? What else should I be digging in to?
