Junior Design Requirement & Graduation

I'm a CS major, and currently on the path to graduate by the end of Fall 2024, and I can't extend that graduation any further. I'm kind of screwed in that I still haven't done my junior design requirement, and am currently in the process of getting into an internship over the summer. I was thinking of taking Option #1, but seems like those classes have a strict attendance policy and I don't know if I'd be able to accommodate that. I was looking towards taking either capstone over the summer and extend into the Fall or just take Create-X over Fall and finish it then. But, I'm not exactly sure on what either of these courses are about. Can anyone who has taken these courses offer some details on what they are about? Also, I haven't done anything in Create-X yet, but was wondering if in order to do Create-X do I need to have to team or could I join any existing team, assuming I get eligible to take it in Fall 2024?

Any insight/help/tips is much appreciated!

I fear for our First Amendment rights on campus

Across the country, students and protesters have been arrested for exercising their free speech rights and peacefully sitting in. They have been shut down, threatened, pushed to the streets so they can be charged, even sending a battery of riot police in full gear on horses against students with megaphones. They’ve scaled down their promises of protecting free speech on their websites.

Gratefully, I’ve not heard much complaints at Tech but I fear the university leadership will be more comfortable now shutting down student protests when someone speaks something they don’t like. Or worse, something their donors don’t like. It doesn’t matter what side of politics you’re on, Tech must recommit to protecting our First Amendment rights for all protected speech. Not just speech they agree on

Any anecdotes on VIPs or CreateX?

So I’m a rising second year MSE major, currently doing 3 hours (for credit) of undergrad research. I’m definitely far more of an assistant and am not doing independent research, though I talked to the PhD student in under and I will def be doing somewhat more next semester, but I still feel like I want to do more. I’m thinking about joining a VIP or createX team, but I’ve heard mixed things about VIP and not much on createX. I haven’t seen many recent things here on this subreddit either, so I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts?

2212 past semesters recorded lectures

Hi everyone,

For those who have taken physics 2212 in the past, especially with Dr. Alicea, do you know if they had all the lectures recorded? If so, do you mind sharing the link to the past lectures? I’d personally need them to review for the upcoming final next week. Thanks a lot!

Current Computer Engineering Program Advice

Hi everyone! I'm looking for advice and review of the current CompE program at tech. For context, I'm heavily interested between both hardware and software (maybe more of the latter) and I'm looking for a career in software engineering in hardware (e.g. robotics).

I've heard a lot about it being difficult for compe majors to enter CS courses as designated in threads and minors like robotics. How true is this right now? Also, generally do compe majors still have the flexibility to get into software engineering and some of the same career opportunities as cs majors? On that note, do compe majors have access to the same opportunities for internships and employment that tech provides cs majors?

Last, I've also been concerned of pursuing CompE at tech with the fear of being a jack of all trades but master of none, in the sense that EE and CS are specialized at their specific fields but CompE is a watered-down version of both. I'm looking for a program where I can learn enough about EE and CS to be proficient in both for the future, so do you think CompE accomplishes this?

tl;dr For someone who likes both hardware and software, and considering future employment in fields like robotics and software engineeering, is CompE at Tech a good fit?

Thanks everyone for the advice! I'll take it all into consideration and I'm looking forward to my next four years at Tech!

Verification for GitHub Student Developer Pack

Did any of you guys complete the verification process for GitHub?

It seems to be asking for proof of enrollment with an expiration date, so transcript and buzzcard aren't getting accepted.

I don't want to pay money to get a copy from clearinghouse. Did any of you manage to get access?

Is Explore LLC worth it if I'm not interested in premed?

I'm an admitted freshman, and I'm interested in undergrad research in mathematics. This sounds like what Explore says they are for, but then I see its for premed students. Is it worth joining if I don't have any premed interests?

Disciplinary probation vs Academic good standing

I wanna know if there’s a difference between being on disciplinary probation and being in good academic standing. I need a good academic standing to transfer to tech as grad student and I’ve already started my F1- visa process . I need to be in good academic standing to transfer, that’s the only condition. Will this affect me getting the visa?

Unable to log into StarRez portal

I am joining GT as an incoming MS student this Fall semester. I am trying to open housing applications but for some reason I keep getting an error saying

Login to StarRez Portal failed. Reason: Login error. Please try again.

Prior posts on this are about 2 years old and I have already tried clearing cache and changing browsers. I have also called the Housing support and created a ticket but nothing has been done.

Has anyone else run into this? Any help is much appreciated!

Multi and DiffEQ in same semester?

How possible is taking both Math 2551 and 2552 in the same semester? I understand that its 4 studios a week and 2 math tests to study for when midterms roll around, but anything else?

BME premeds, how was your experience?

Hi everyone, I'm a prospective incoming student at GT for biomedical engineering and I'm planning on doing the pre-med route! I just have a couple of questions about GT/BME/premed and I would really appreciate if anyone could answer:

  1. I know that engineering has a rep for being harder to get a good GPA. For those studying BME, how was the difficulty of your classes and workload? Is it hard to get a good GPA? Did you find yourself always stressing out or was there still a good amount of time to do other things and have fun?
  2. How are premed opportunities at tech (e.g. volunteering, shadowing, clubs, etc.)? And how is research?
  3. Also, do you guys recommend testing out of intro classes w credit (e.g. AP)? I'm just worried that if I skip I'll struggle to get used to the difficulty of upper-level classes (math/chemistry/physics).
  4. Outside of premed, how well does tech prepare students for industry?

In general, I do want to study engineering and I do prefer it over biology, but I'm also afraid of burn out. I'm also not 100% dead set on medicine, although I'm strongly considering it at the moment. So, if any of you guys could give some advice, I would really appreciate it!

What is housing like for someone who is oversensitive?

I am very sensitive to many things I would imagine are common in dorms: noises, smells (e.g. I >cannot< use deodorants that are not odourless), sharing facilities, etc. In particular, I have very long and specific bedtime and morning routines (e.g. for some reason I feel the need to go to the toilet at least thrice before I leave home in the morning, etc.)

In short, I am what I think people would call a "snowflake" or whatever. At least my dad finds it quite boggling how sensitive I am to so many things.

How well do you think I would fare living at Georgia Tech? I have had these peculiar thingys for years and not even my parents' habits have changed them, so I am worried Georgia Tech dorms would feel unbearable to me (or I would make my roommate's life unbearable, for that matter).

Please do not reserve private rooms in Crosland/Price Gilbert/CULC if you do not intend to actually use them!

Every time I’m looking for an available room to use at one of these locations, they are almost always fully booked for the entire week. However, most of the time the rooms are completely empty! It’s very frustrating when I’m searching for a private spot in the library for myself or a group I’m part of to study/do work in and the rooms are empty but completely unusable because someone else has taken up the booking.

Maybe Georgia Tech should implement a system that allows you to sign up for a booked spot if whoever made the booking doesn’t show up by 5 minutes after the booking time.

Griffin track hours for student use

Is it possible for non student athletes to use the track during off hours/ off season of the track team? My form of workouts are track workouts and it would sucks to deter from that since high school. I understand that there is an indoor track in the crc but that is really annoying to use for sprints and I can’t use my spikes in the asphalt on the rectangle stamps track.

I’m not on that part of campus to really observe hours of inactivity.

Does anyone have experience with this? I’m fine with even using the track late at night.

What's the name of the Pod Storage Company that people use at the dorms?

I know that there's a couple companies that people use but I can remember the name. I see them at the traffic circle in NAV a lot. I'm not taking about PODS though. They're really expensive. Also, any cheap storage discussion is welcome!

Thanks for keeping Gatech sane, and not a Columbia/Yale/Stanford/Berkeley/Princeton/Harvard

Seeing what’s happening at the Ivy’s and top Eng schools relating to Middle East. Thank you Georgia tech students for keeping Gatech as a class act institution where students of all backgrounds can come to learn to better humanity. Makes me proud of my Alma Mater.

As an alumnus in a Silicon Valley FANG who’s hiring for a few L7 SWE IC roles, it’s clearly making an impact as my leadership is all looking towards Atlanta/GT being top of mind as a place of hiring growth.
