Game Gear was Sega's entry into the handheld market. Having Sonic the Hedgehog blast on to portables is just the thing that many gamers had been waiting for!

Going Rate for Non-Working Game Gears

I've gotva pretty decent size stockpile of game gears I've picked up over the years. I'm planning on working my way through them this winter, refurbishing them to sell. I'm thinking about buying some more, mostly by advertising through Facebook marketplace. My question is this, what is a reasonable price for someone to pay for a non-working game gear off the street with no knowledge of its interior condition? Also, I'm used to selling on eBay, but is there a better option? I noticed alot of folks selling on Etsy, but it just seems like eBay would have the most exposure to potential buyers.

Self-rebooting Game Gear while playing and disappearing sound.

Hi,

What can be the problem? While playing GG sometimes rebooting itself, sometimes sound disappears and appears again after some time.

It’s recapped and with IPS screen mod.

GG giving a headache. Need help from peeps with similar issues.

Hi, the model is a twin chip btw.

Got myself a nice looking GG, and ofc, it needs recap. Tested it before recapping, ofc, no audio and the screen has low contrast and lines. But through the lines I could tell that it's playing the game; I could recognize the blue Sega logo and the Sonic 2 intro. So, I went directly to recap.

Once recapped, the contrast was back, but now it doesn't play games, All I'm getting is audio statics and clicking noise at high volume. I checked the caps, only 1 trace was broken, but even without caps at all, it should play game audio.

After further researching, I discovered 4 broken traces between the card connector and the ram. Restoring them did nothing. Only the clicking noise was gone.

I compared it to a working board and I noticed that the ram isn't pulsing on certain pins. Is that a dead ram or is there more broken lines that need restoring before the ram can work properly?

If you guys got some similar past experience, please help. Any suggestion are worth the try. I wanna save this one because it has a nice screen and is in good shape.

Why Are All The Chinese LCD Mods Incompatible With Taiwanese Boards?

I noticed both the Hispeedido and "FunnyPlaying" boards specifically state they won't work with Taiwanese boards. I decided to try it out, and sure enough, they don't. Why? Is it something to do with the pinout going to the lcd pads? Is it different on Taiwanese boards?

Game Gear Repair - Need Recommendation

Hi All,

My OG game gear no longer plays audio and I am looking for a good repair shop in the US that accepts mail-ins for a recap and possibly replacement of the audio board.

I saw ifixretro is recommended by a lot of folks but I can't find any contact info for them and no reply from emails.

Thanks for the help.

Overall saved chunky boys. A 6th one is awaiting an IPS screen transplant. I may also get a 7th one if the seller accepts the offer.

Can a ZP37 be replaced by a ZQ37? This one looks cracked down the middle and no 34v on the power pin.

The heck Sega, I thought this was fake and the seller was ready to refund. Then I searched online and many people say it's legit. Also, it has the Sega logo on the back of the PCB.

Screen replacement service?

Me and my fiance just discovered her old Game Gear in storage and while it turns on and the sound works the screen does not. I am not tech or electronic savvy in any way nor do I know anyone that is.

Is there a service or company that anyone knows of that I could send this to and have them replace/upgrade the screen for me? I have found plenty of kits but it's all do it yourself and I am not confident enough to even try.

Thanks in advance if anyone can help!

Did I Overpay?

I won this on eBay last night. It wasn't listed as a Majesco, but I'm sure the other bidders were aware it was. It looks to be in great condition physically. Seller says it works great. It also came with a TV tuner and Game Genie. I got it for around $140usd after shipping.

VA4, is this a cap problem or dodgy via?

This is my first VA4 and I have fully recapped and have these two probably related issues.

SMS - brightness of games seems ok, but I have these white horizontal lines. Is this normal with SMS games and VA4s?

GG - it's dull (and even inverted a little) when looking directly at the screen front on. On the slightest (and I mean slight...) angle from underneath, the screen looks completely fine... I feel like after about 5-10 mins, the viewing angle improves enough to play it looking directly front on, but it's still a bit dull.

I used a bunch of leftover electrolyte caps which I don't like and have ordered a new set of ceramic ones from retrosix - hoping this solves my problem, but I'm open minded that it could be a dodgy via somewhere, however, in my experience this usually leads to an incredibly bright display - not dull....

Has anyone else had this or similar with a VA4? Hoping that seeing my SMS and GG symptoms together, someone might have an idea.
