When to use Bb side?

Since 2 months ago i'm playing with a single Bb horn in band, yesterday I decided to pick up a double french horn. I've been playing french horn for almost a year (I was playing trumpet for 2 years) and one of the most issues I've being incountered is the Bb side of the horn. I don't know when or where I have tu use it, or if I have to practice in one side of the horn particularly instead of the other.

Shank

Hello, good morning.

Look, I have a question about mouthpieces, about the American and European necks, since they can be bought in both forms. I currently play with a Schilke 31 b, but I don't know what neck it has, or what differences there are between them. I currently play with a Holoton 179. I hope you can help me, thanks.

Thinking about starting

Hi I am a multi instrumentalist musician and I have worked with mostly strings for most of my highschool career, I wanted to work with brass and winds since my school has no orchestra, I have played clarinet and Tuba but I was interested in starting french horn and sticking with it for the rest of highschool (three years). any recommendations for beginner methods? My highschool band teacher can help me with basics but I think it would benefit me more to also work on basics and progress a bit faster outside school too.

Metronome and Tuner

My daughter is a beginner and is in need of a metronome and tuner for a French horn. I need a standalone device rather than apps on a phone because she’s too young for a smartphone. Many thanks!

Piece of paper stuck in brace

I have a a bit of an odd conundrum in that recently my third slide brace came unsoldered. I'm going to go get it fixed by a shop however this was 2 or 3 weeks ago and I needed to be able to play in the meantime so I stuck some paper in there to hold it together and it is now unfortunately stuck. I'm sure the pros can get it out however I wanted to get it out for them before I hand it over. Any ideas?

Hello had a question

Never really played French horn but I lm considering it. I have thick lips. Only instrument I actually learned was the tuba. Any tips for getting g the umburchore for French horn? Or any exercises? Plus is there some lip conditioner thingy? Don't know the name but it corrects your lip position.

Tips for Low Range Gap?

I've been having a lot of frustration with my mid-low range lately. I can play down to an F two below the staff with decent tone, but I can't figure out how to get the area from G to D right below the staff to sound good. I play a double horn and I've been taught to switch to the Bb horn for the F to Db in that range, but on the Bb horn that range is really loud and out of control. Then the G and Gb above it are really soft and hard to even make sound properly, so anything I play in that range just doesn't have a good sound quality. I've done a fair amount of normal low range work, which has improved my more extreme low range, but it hasn't really been helping in the middle area. Does anyone have advice?

Strange embouchure issue

I am a highschool horn player, Ive been playing for about a year and a half now. My biggest roadblock right now is a double buzz. The reason I find it strange is because it ONLY happens when I play first space F, F#, or 2nd line G. Ive tried adjusting my embouchure, changing air, angling the horn, buzzing into my mouthpiece, but for whatever reason I am unable to get rid of this really specific range problem. If anyone has any recommendations or ideas as to why this might be, I would be ecstatic to hear them.

Rotary Oil

I have never had anyone give me advice on rotary oil. Suggestions? I play a Holten. Also my keys are super clicky. I have taken it in. They couldn't make it not click. Any suggestions?

Embouchure

I’ve always loved jazz all of my life, in sixth grade I started playing my first instrument french horn. In eight grade I started playing trumpet because I love jazz so much. Since then, I don’t know exactly when this happened, my embouchure shifted down, not fitting the regular 2/3ish upper lip placement. I’m in my freshmen year of high school now and it is concerning me a lot on how much of a problem it is. I’m concerned that switching my embouchure will revert progress i’ve made in my range and in general improvement. Can someone help put my mind at ease? Or give me some well needed information? Thanks.

Accutane is actually ruining my playing

The effect the dry lips has on my horn playing is actually so frustrating its not even funny. I've been on it for about a month and a half now and ever since like the second week its gotten progressively worse and worse, especially since they moved me from 40 to 80mg a couple weeks ago. My endurance, my tone, my flexibility, my range, and my accuracy have all made consistant backwards progress. I feel so inadequate and an overwhelming sense of imposter syndrome. All of the people that hear me for the first time think that im just bad. Yes, my acne is bad. But im contemplating getting off of it because this is taking a big toll on me mentally. I don't think I can thug this out for 5 more months. Every time I practice strauss 1 with people around i dont even attempt anything above a G because it sounds so bad. I apply aquaphor several times per hour and drink lot off water but its the affect it has on the stiffness of my lips that causes my problems. I feel like im buzzing with rocks when i play its not even funny. My low range suffers too. I play 4th horn in a quartet where there are a lot of pedal Gs and its almost impossible to control anymore. My low register used to be one of my strongest ranges but now everything sucks.

Any advice please please help, this is really taking a huge toll on my mental health and sense of confidence.

Very Slow Keys

I need help with my horn keys. I used rotor and key oil on it in every way you can. It didnt do anything. So I added more. Still nothing. I was steps away from turning this horn into one of diddy’s victims if I kept adding more oil. I washed the horn, and at first they did get faster, but then got back to where they were after like 6 minutes. I actually dont know what to do. Please help

This mouthpiece came with Accent beginner double horn model HR711L. I am looking to purchase a new mouthpiece and would like to know the exact dimensions of this one. (Internal rim diameter, rim width, depth, etc) Any help is appreciated.

French horn mouth piece?

My son plays French horn in concert band, mellophone in swing band and is looking to join an orchestra band. He's been a horn player for four years now. Since he borrows from the school I was looking at getting him his own mouth piece for Christmas.

Any recommendations on brand or style? Or what I'm looking for? He takes his French horn very seriously so I want to make sure I get him something special.

Teaching French Horn

I've recently started a coop where I teach beginning french horns and it's been great, they are improving greatly but was tasked with working with a more experienced section of French horns and had some trouble. I was struggling to keep them engaged through repeated slow practice and just couldn't figure out what to do to help them improve on notes other than individual practice. Does anyone have any resources or advice?

Schilke 31B o PHC First

Hi, I've been loaned a Schilke 31 B and I'm quite comfortable with it, but I don't know if a PHC First would be better, which has a bit more depth. What I'm looking for is a comfortable rim and a warm sound that packs well. Thanks

I need your opinion

So I’m an intermediate horn player who might have my first solo In January of next year. So I need to know what mouthpiece you would recommend for lead and solo horn playing.
