As we know, Freespace has one of the greatest world building in space shoter genre. But there are many, many plot holes and inaccuracies inside setting. Like:
-How the Vasudans deciphered Ancient entries and tech so quickly?
- Why there is no way to communicate by standard radio signal with Earth?
- Why Shivans do not use beam weapons in FS1 on every ship but they do in FS2?
- How it's even possible that human and vasudan colonies that were overrun during Great War were repopulated in mere 30 years? We know Shivans should exterminate every colony in controled star systems.
- Why Shivans in Freespace 2 are in possesion of flak guns, canonicaly GTVA invention?
None of those ever been addressed by the Volition and never will be. If making FS sequel was up to you, should those be rectoactively retconed for more fitting into the story? (Like f.e. Shivans DID use beam canons and the battle between Bastion and Tantalus was way more desperate and miraculous than we see in game? Or that Vasudans were working in secret on deciphering the Ancient's message for some time - or even uncomplete/inacurate deciphering fragments of message inspired the birth of Hammer of Light itself!)
Hi there, Freespacers! Longtime FS & FS2 fan here -- I loved the mystery and action of the original games. I'm also a D&D Dungeon Master, and my campaign has lasted over a decade. It involves now lots of spelljamming and airship (read: fantasy spaceship) combat and action, and I've introduced the equivalent of the "Shivans" in this game.
The SD Lucifer has been making frequent appearances and I am looking to see if anyone has a high-resolution texture of the Lucifer from the top-down, so I can make a D&D map of this! While the Lucifer is invulnerable in realspace, of course, when it spelljams it becomes vulnerable -- and soon the players will assault it as it does so! I'd like a map that I can festoon with turrets, bad guys, traps and force-fields, and of course, it's super-lasers and contingents of fighters and smaller vessels.
Might anyone have such a map they'd be willing to share with me? A kind thank you, in advance.
Also great to have while coding or studying.
Basically the title, I'm playing on Insane difficulty.
In the mission you need to escort two escape pods, which wouldn't be too bad (and for certain waves isn't), if not for the third wave.
The enemy ships almost instantly launch missiles, which absolutely wreck the escape pods.
Is there some good way to kill them (perhaps changing stuff in the wingmen loadouts?) before they manage to launch them, or is this mostly a luck-based thing?
I have, in several attempts, just once managed to get the pods to survive, but sadly died in a stupid way later.
Hey, guys. I'm the lead developer of Inferno, the FS2 classic mod. After 21 years, we're nearly ready to release Inferno Act 2, and we need your help to voice-act some characters.
Currently, we need:
Please DM for details!
Because this might be outdated information
In the voiceover from Command, his officers were all killed by the Shivans but don't remember any confirmation of his status with the implication that he went with them after possibly more advanced communication.
And if the Shivans could always have did whatever they did in Capella to leave the area, does this mean that speaking with Bosch or learning something from his mind change their mind about simply wiping out the GTVA?
I only recently found the game, and all the knossos mods and upgrades. The single player is great, but is anyone else out there still playing the mulitplayer campaigns?
Just curious. Everspacce 2 is fun n all, but FS2 is a better campaign. Would be cool if there was a 6dof mod since I'm pretty sure the game has binds for the extra translation axis for multiplayer.
Hi I was looking for a new game to play on steam and found that freespace 2 would seem to scratch that itch. I saw in the reviews that it doesn't work out of the box and getting freespace open would fix that and make a lot of improvements across the board. Doing some research led me here for the instructions, but it seems that the date of the instructions on the wiki here are a bit before the release of windows 11 which is the OS I currently use. I've had issues with old games and windows 11 in the past so I just wanted to know if freespace 2 and freespace open would work ok with with windows 11 before I spend any money or start the downloading process. Any other advice or tips for starting out would also be greatly appreciated!

Hello. Freespace was my first ever video game growing up as a kid. I've got lots of headcannon about the whole game and I've come to begin using the effects from the command briefings to start making some fun Helldiver 2 videos.
My idea is to brief some Illuminate intelligence officers about the various weapons and tactics the helldivers are using. I've wanted to experiment with the audio filter the vasudan voice actors used in freespace 2 to "ailenify" their translated English.
Issue is, I have zero ideas on how to mimic it.
I'm hoping to have some help with this one from my fellow GTVA pilots. Thanks for your time!
A cousin of mine has some free space under the stairs. What would you do with this?
So I was exploring some mods to improve my gameplay and I came across the jaded modpack and it offers some good QOL features, but the problem is that the last update was in 2022, The Qol features are nice but it requires the installation of a 2 year old version of Freespace mvp upgrade, is there a workaround for this?, i am not very good at modding
(Couldn't register to the Hard-Light forums so here I am)
I'm playing FSO on an Intel NUC8i3BEH (Intel Iris Plus 655 graphics). Not a gaming ring per se, but it's dead silent in a passive cooled case, and why not play an oldschool game on it?
Silent Threat: Reborn (dependent on MVPS) WITHOUT deferred lightning (trying to keep my FPS up...) got some weird shiny/pink/purple glitch which is not gamebreaking, but sure makes every ship look terrible. Any settings that could help me fix it? In-game settings didn't help.
Enabling Deferred Lighting drops my FPS to ~30, which is not good. I could lower the resolution, but since I have an ultrawide monitor, and the game stretches the content in fullscreen mode on lower resolutions, lowering the resolution is not an option (unless you know how to keep the aspect ratio fullscreen)
So what settings could help having high FPS and no pink glitches?

So I got into freespace circa 2004 and been revisiting hardlight since 2006? I think. Goober's "Welcome to HLP!" (Green beam o laser lol). I'm balls deep into psvr2 gt7 atmo and has dabbled into psvr1 starwars squadrons. Gt7 has a tm t300wheel, basshakers and a windsim in VR, squadrons on a tm hotas 4. The thrustmaster (tm) pedals work as rudders btw! GT7 has telemetry sent to simhub and this translates to variable wind to let your skin feel speed. It helps fool the lizard brain that you're going fast. Bass shakers simulate road texture and gear grinding. F123 PS5 does this too. Squadrons does not. Imagine going full afterburner, bass shakers going wild. Windsim blowing 3k rpm as you're trying to save your compromised hull. Waiting for the shockwaves to hit your ship as you take out your first Shivan capital ship... Oh, if you're not keen on VR, my rig had a 55" OLED for the deep blacks... I never got to appreciate it in fs2 as I haven't had a gaming PC in so long. (Athlon x3 + 450gts)
I'm new to the game although I enjoy it quite a lot (had a ton of hours in Tie Fighter back in the day, so I'm not new to space combat sims overall). I'm just 6 or 7 missions in. Also, I'm new to setting up a HOTAS config. Simply put, I don't have much idea what keys are the best choice to bind to the HOTAS - limited number of buttons (compared to a keyboard) and I just don't know enough of the game to know what are the "good" choices. I mean, communications commands would already require me to stick to the keyboard, so I will need to let go of the throttle once in a while, but still.
Soooo T.16000M joystick and throttle combo. My current config:
Joystick (4 buttons + POV hat)
Throttle (5 buttons, D-pad, POV hat, analog stick, pinky dial)
I'm trying to figure out the energy distribution and "equalize shield" options as they "sound" important, but is there anything else I'm missing?
Keep in mind I'm using Knossos, planning to play the Freespace and Freespace 2 official missions first.
Is there a way to skip the tutorial? It takes forever and I’m just going to remap the keybinds, anyway. I can’t get past the tutorial because it’s just so dang long.
When I click on the menu on the Diaspora mod, it doesn’t do anything except let me load the tutorial.
Hi, this is my first mod ever :). I‘ve remastered all ingame voices, briefings and radio messages. Thanks to FSO the engine can now handle ogg files so I could upsample all audio from 22.05KHz to 44.1Khz.
Heres an example video: https://youtu.be/624vLlAhPAs?si=2J91ym6jzUno3tHJ
Get it via Knossos.net or on nebula
To use it with other mods, set it as a dependency for the other mod and put it at the top of the dependency list.
Let me know if you find any issues so can fix them. Should I do FS1 next or another language?
Hey, so I've always just installed Freespace 2 from steam and played it, but I saw this dude's long playthrough here: https://youtu.be/Nx4OJFH-8N4?si=ZXwGvmrERa9hzpjT
and wanted to experience the better textures and effects myself so I saw he was running FSOPEN enhanced engine so I decided to install FSOPEN, but the textures and stuff don't look the same in my game as they do in his playthrough, so what gives?
I used Knossos for ease of installation: https://knossosnet.github.io/Knossos-Release-Page/ if that helps.
I'd appreciate any help.
As the title says, it trying to get vr working but it always seems to be laggy/crashes. I can’t find any videos on it really and google doesn’t help much. I am using a amd 5700xt and a ryzen chip, I know that the mod author said that amd has issues but was wondering if anyone got it working
I bought the GOG version and I'd like to try it, but I don't have a joystick. Is there a way to play with a controller? Is it worth it? Do I need mods for my first time? I'd rather keep things as simple as possible. Thanks for your help in advance - I searched for this information and wasn't able to find any sort of comprehensive guide. Game looks like it really stands up and I'd like to try it.
To provoke a bit of discussion, share your stories about when you broke a mission by exceeding or failing its completion requirements. This also includes when you may manage to destroy or lose a target or asset, but because the mission designer intended that it survive, it is still present in the next mission. You may chose from official or fan-made missions.
Once, a very long time ago, I was playing Destiny of Peace, back when it was just a series of missions, not connected by a campaign file. I don't recall the specifics, but there was a mission in which a corrupt commanding officer, is working to undermine the GTA by secretly supporting the Vasudans. At one point, his Orion class flagship was in an asteroid belt for some reason, and unlike Vanilla FS2, where ship turrets won't target asteroids, this was on the FS1, where they do. I didn't have the firepower to destroy this ship, and it wasn't supposed to be destroyed as far as the plot was concerned. Anyway, I had a support ship, and a bank of Phoenix V missiles, so I just sat out of turret range, and started sniping off its turrets. Eventually, I created a hole in its defensive sphere, so that the asteroids in the active field, started hitting it, to the point that it was destroyed.
Hello all,
I'm in the middle of the Silent threat: Reborn-campaign. I was playing the 1.7.1-version, because 1.7.2 gives an error.
A few minutes ago, I accidentally clicked 'update' in stead of 'play', and now v1.7.2 is installed, with the error. I can't play it anymore, and I also can't find a way to undo the update. I can't select which version I'd like to play anymore.
Is there a way to undo update and keep my progress? Or do I have to uninstall Silent Threat, and re-install the 1.7.1-version? Will I keep my progress, or do I have to restart the campaign from the beginning?
