Firespinning and mosquito spray

I'm supposed to spin at an event next weekend where there's going to be a lot of mosquitos and risk of dengue. Most mosquito spray that contains deet also contains alcohol, and I've found natural buy sprays are not really effective in this area. I'm wondering if I spray myself with the deet/alcohol spray maybe a couple hours before I spin, is this bad? Or is this enough time for the spray to be absorbed into my skin that it shouldn't have any negative effects? Thanks.

Beginner spinner

Okay so I bought an LED dragon staff about 3 months ago with the intention of spinning fire one day. I’ve been practicing non stop since I bought it but I feel like I’ve hit a roadblock. I’ve learned the basic moves (chi roll, cheating death, etc) but I feel like I can’t get other basic moves down and it’s super discouraging. I don’t know how to keep the flow going so effortlessly. I wonder if I should start practicing with a regular contact staff to get the movements down? I feel a contact staff would be easier to learn considering how much lighter it would be compared to my dragon. I’ve watched countless YouTube videos on other moves but once I learned the chi roll and cheating death that’s all I can do. I want to progress further but I’m not sure how. I’m considering another other forms for flow- maybe fans. What form of fire spinning is easiest to learn with?

Etiquette for Reaching out to Photographers

Hey all - I performed at an event recently and there were two photographers taking videos and photos of myself and the other performers.

What is the etiquette around reaching out to them for some of the things they captured? I don’t know if that’s something I have to pay for or if I can ask for the raw footage and that’s a normal thing to do? Lol

I think both photographers were hired to do promotional material for the event space if that makes a difference as well.

Braided Fire Spinning Clothing

I’ve been looking around at clothing options s and was curious about the braided designs I’ve seen some fire spinners wear. There seems to be a split response towards them: some say they need to be worn with caution due to props getting caught in the designs, and some say that it’s fine as long as it’s cotton based.

I’m curious on what everyone’s thoughts are on this and would love any recommendations.

Help with sizing

Hey guys! I’m looking to buy my first dragon staff and I need some advice. I found this dragon for sale and I was wondering if it’s too short for me? For reference I sit around between 178cm and the staff is 160cm. Also any other beginner advice would be more than welcome in terms of choosing the right staff for me and for progressing in different moves :)

Palm Transfers Guide

Hello! I am the head of fire safety for a spinning club at my university. I am currently putting together a procedure on how to do palm transfers, but it's hard to find information on how to do it safely (we have few connections to the larger spinning community). The current procedure (rough) is written out below but any advice on how to refine it or if I am missing anything important would be greatly appreciated!! (We use Coleman white gas fuel).

Fire Transfers (for a staff):

  1. dip and spin off as normal

  2. light one wick

  3. Press two fingers firmly to the unlit wick to get some fuel onto your fingertips

  4. tap the lit wick

  5. without moving your hand, rotate the staff to bring the unlit wick to the flame on your hands

  6. To put out your hand, smother it by hitting the flame against your thigh and holding it there (to snuff out the oxygen)

Gifting a staff

Hi all!

Just looking for some advice on finding a good begginers/intermediate staff for my girlfriend for her birthday.

She has had a staff before and always regretted selling it, it's her birthday at the end of October and I'd really like to get her one but want to make sure it's the right length, weight ect. She is 5ft 11 and has obviously used one before.

Would you recommend gifting her one as a surprise or taking her to a shop and letting her choose one?

TIA!

Easiest to learn/start with firetoy

Heyho, I know the topic easy or hard etc is very subjective, but bear with me.

In my friendsgroup is someone with huge fear in regards of fire, especially uncontrolled fire, that wants to fight this fear. Looking at fire shows helps and I want to take some time to maybe help them learn how to play or at least do basics with some firetoy to support that.

I started learning with firepoi and found my groove with the dragonstaff now. Poi aren't an option, the possiblity of them becoming uncontrollable or tangled up is way too much for them. Dragonstaff is quite heavy and for someone who has no touching points so far with juggling, I think it's also quite hard to learn. What toy would you recommend? What would you go with? I am thinking either contact staff, doubles or very maybe a levistick but I am open for all ideas snd suggestions

Fire spinning in Croatia

Hey, I'm wondering if there are any restrictions if it comes to fire spinning in Croatia. This week I'm visiting Umag and planning on having some photo shoot on the beach. Should I get/buy some sort of permission to do it or can I do it freely?

Getting burnt through gloves

I'm going to be in a group fire fan show for Halloween. During rehearsals, I have gotten burned through my gloves (I have the Dark Monk Nomex gloves) multiple times now, specifically my second knuckle. This last burn caused one of my knuckles to blister. I'm the only one having this issue, though we all have the same gloves and the same choreography. The only difference is the fans we have; according to my instructor, the wicks on my fans are large, which is good since the fire lasts till the end of the performance (or else I would get my fans re-wicked) but bad for my knuckles. I was thinking of buying a second pair of the Dark Monk Nomex gloves, but I was wondering if anyone would have any other recommendations to prevent my knuckles from getting burnt.

Edit: I wanted to update this post for anyone else was running into this issue. I found these knit kevlar gloves (https://store.afstunts.com/products/af-kv-gl) that I wear under the Dark Monk Nomex gloves and feel nothing, even with flames blowing back and hitting my knuckles.

Help removing paraffin stain from stone?

Hello,

I was sharing some fire spinning stuff at a colleague's house and spilled paraffin oil on her lovely stone pavers.

I'm mostly finding tips on paraffin WAX removal. This was liquid paraffin oil. The spill was Monday.

General tips I've found for oil on stone have been mineral oil, acetone... anybody with specific experience with paraffin oil?

And can anybody describe the removal process more? Multiple cycles? Let it sit and rinse with water?

Thanks in advance!

Fuel help!

Heya. Y'all were super helpful last time, so I am back asking more n00b questions 😂

Is regular BBQ lighter fluid ok for fire spinning? Not eating, just lighting fans and torches (the closest I get is blowing through the hollow torch).

I usually use Colemans but it's three times the price of basic BBQ fluid. I wasn't sure if they are the same tho.

The specific fluid I am considering is this: https://www.bmstores.co.uk/products/quickflame-bbq-lighting-fluid-1l-383923

The bottle says it contains kerosene but no other details. I didn't want to experiment and risk ruining my wicks or my health in any way, and Google remains divided.

TIA!

Lyco powder

Does anyone have experience with lyco powder? Like how is it applied on a prop. Is it dusted on top after it has soaked in fuel?

Fire Prop Vendor Recs?

I’m new to fire spinning and researching vendors and props. I was wondering if there’s an updated comprehensive list of vendors for fire props? I’ve been gleaning old posts/reviews but some vendors aren’t in business anymore or reviews are a couple years old.

As for me I’m leaning to purchasing a contact fire staff possibly from Dark Monk, but also interested in double staff (from House of Poi) or sword (from Dark Monk) due to similar movement styles.

I’d appreciate your input and experiences!

Fire hoop

Hi! Looking for some advice - I’ve been hooping for about a year now. I recently got some palm torches to ease into the realm of fire and after about 3 burns, I’m itching for a fire hoop. Should I dive in??? Or should I take some more time to get comfortable with the element using the palm torches? :))) tips / advice welcome <3

Are there any readily available skin creams that offer fire protection?

I'm going to my very first fire jam this coming weekend and have everything more or less ready for my very first time lighting up but was wondering if there are any creams or gels people use to protect their skin and hair that are either easily made or readily available in the US. I plan to tie my hair up tight and spray it down with water, plus I got Kevlar sleeves to help protect my arms. I was just wondering if there were any creams or gels I could use to further protect myself.

Extinguishing fire fans

Holla. New to fire spinning and have been asked to do a fire fan performance in six weeks. I've worked out the basic routine and the wonderful folks of YouTube have taught me moves and safety, but I can't find anything about putting the fans out on stage. Unfortunately going off stage to extinguish in a blanket won't be possible (stage has curtains). Can I just blow the wicks out if they burn low enough? Is there some technique I should know?

I've only previously used hollow torches and those I just tend to blow through the shaft to extinguish.

Thanks in advance!

(Edit: You folk are so wonderful and helpful! Thank you for all the suggestions and tips. I've got a few rehearsals this week and lots of techniques to have a go at or ways of devising the larger staging to suggest to allow for a safe extinguish. What a wonderful community to have joined).
