Indexing / tagging people in records that span more than one page

Hi everyone, I have a question about indexing records that span two pages. Sometimes a record starts on one page and continues to the next, with the main person’s name on the first page, but additional names are listed on the second.

Since I can’t tag names on the second page if the main record is on the previous page, what’s the best way to handle this?

Thanks in advance!

Relativefinder says I am descended from European Royalty, how accurate could this be?

I have taken an AncestryDNA test and decided to look up someone on one of my matches’ family trees (this person was either 1st cousin 1x removed or half granduncle and was also on another match’s family tree so I feel confident in knowing I started in the right place) and it says I descend from James V, King of Scotland through his illegitimate son, Robert Stewart. I decided to also include a screenshot of my ancestryDNA results, if that could be any help. I’m adopted, so I can’t confirm a lot of this, if any, with family. A journey that ancestryDNA also says my ancestors went on is through the Delaware Valley, Chesapeake & Midwest Settlers; particularly North Central Kentucky Settlers. This can be backed up by my English ancestry and minimal Scottish (before the update it was around 10%). I was able to see that there were solid sources and research done on the ancestors in the family tree all the way until the early 1700s. The last reliable point is when my two of my possible ancestors actually migrated from Scotland to the Americas. Then there is this one person with no sources (I believe there is an attached source of her birth in a church in Scotland) or proof of her being related to James V, yet she is the one who connects the tree to him. Her name is Antoinette Bruce, Daughter of Ursula Mowat and Andrew Bruce. Everything else before and after her has solid links and proof, so it’s just this one unreliable part of the tree that is making me distrustful of this.

Does anyone know anything about this man?

His name is Juan Esolk, he was born between 1828 and 1839 and died in 1912. He was born in Germany and magically appeared in Uruguay, married to Cleta Caldas and 5 children (maybe there are more, but I'm not sure), these are:

- Aurelia Esolk Caldas (my great-great-grandmother)

- Juana Esolk Caldas

- Josefa Esolk Caldas

- Juan Erasmo Esolk Caldas

- Augusto Esolk

I've been trying to find something else about Juan Esolk for days, such as his parents, grandparents, siblings or records of his birth or baptism, but I haven't found ANYTHING besides what I mentioned before. It's as if this person has appeared out of nowhere.

There are also no records of his trip from Germany to Uruguay, and I don't know why he changed his last name. The surname Esolk seems limited to my family line, as everyone living or dead with this surname is related in some way to Juan Esolk.

I have also seen that the last name changes in certain records, in some it is Osolke, and in others, it is Esolh or Osoltec... all of this has been confusing and has generated more questions than answers. Was he escaping from someone or something? Has he destroyed all the records himself? Is there another explanation? Why does there seem to be almost no information about him?

There is NOTHING about his wife, Cleta Caldas, apart from what I said before, I only know that she was born in 1840 and died between 1898 and 1910. Apart from that there is nothing about her family, I don't know if she had siblings or anything similar. There is nothing about her parents either, it is as if they both had appeared out of nowhere.

Sorry for all the yapping, but I need more clues to tell me if he had siblings or who his parents are. This has become a huge family mystery, and maybe there is something more behind all of this.

Thank you very much for your time and for reading this entire Bible, this is very confusing.

PSA: BRAZILIAN IMMIGRATION RECORDS BEING PRIVATIZED

It is unfortunate that there are many Brazilian immigration records being privatized and creating brickwalls in research. However, there is a way to access the records without restrictions.

Search for the person’s name on the “Search Historical Records” section of the site. When you’ve found the record, don’t click on the name, but instead click on the camera icon under it. You now have access to the records.

If you still have issues accessing the records, DM me and I can check for you.

I can't see this source of a relative who emigrated to Brazil.

His name is Justo Evaristo Viñoles Esolk, son of Aurelia Esolk Caldas (my great-grandmother) and Evaristo Viñoles (my great-grandfather). For some reason, when I try to view this archive, it displays an error.

I would be grateful if you could find a solution (the same is happening with several Brazilian documents from other relatives). Thanks for your time! :D

Relationship Button in FamilySearch

Hello FamilySearch Reddit. I am hoping someone can give me insight into this: James Rossiter LZBR-ZK3 is brother to my 5th great-grandmother Anne Rossiter KD1Q-CYV and when I click on the view relationship button he shows up as my 5th great-granduncle (this is good). When I use the view relationship button for any of his descendants (or his wife Miriam LW5Z-PZB) it shows 'relationship unknown'. I was told to try linking them as biological relationship type and when I first did this it worked. Now it is always showing 'relationship unknown'. I went over the entire chain again and verified everything and even marked each one as biological and still the same. This does not seem to happen for the downlines of other siblings of James and Anne (e.g. G7TQ-CCY).

GPS Coordinates

I had an idea, and I want to get feedback on it. Family search is great when you are uploading memories in which pertinent details (Title, Description, Event Date, Event Place), but the place is limited to just a city, county, state format. I’m sure part of that is for privacy concerns. BUT, is it ok, or is it worth it to include GPS location in the description if the place is public and privacy isn’t a concern?

Example, our family took a vacation to Crescent City, California and we have a number of photos on a beach that I uploaded to my own memory section. I want to include the GPS so that there could be a chance of a descendent taking a similar trip and they are able to stand in the exact same spot (taking out continental drift of course hahaha).

It could also be helpful maybe for an ancestor, like if there is a picture of their house that was years later demolished, where including a GPS location isn’t dependent on a street address that doesn’t exist anymore.

Again, I just want to get feedback! Thanks in advance!

2 parts: 1. Define these terms adopted biological foster guardianship step, 2. do you add stepfather stepmother, if yes what criteria to use ?

  1. How do you define these terms ?

Interested in other's thoughts on the 3 I've filled in, in addition to the other 2

  • adopted - legal term to legally become mother or father to a non-biological child
  • biological - mother & father the child got their DNA from
  • foster -
  • guardianship -
  • step - usually a remarriage after divorce/breakup/widow or the marriage of an unmarried woman with children

regarding foster: that is a term used in the USA nowadays for children who have been taken out of the biological parents home, usually(?) by social services, and officially put into a "foster" home to provide temporary care for the child. From my understanding, fostering assumes there's no other legal relationship (like marriage or adoption). Was the term used differently in the past ?

What are other circumstances or examples of relationships when "foster" would be used ? How does that differ from "guardianship" ? What if the child is related, like if an older sibling is raising the child, or an aunt/uncle, grandparent, cousin, etc - they could certainly be officially placed as foster parents, but also sometimes the relative just starts caring for the child without going through the system. I've seen documents/sources where a person has been named guardian for a child, in which case it seems obvious to use "guardian".

.

  1. Do you (always usually often sometimes rarely never, or ____) add step information when you come across a step mother or step father ? Meaning, you link each child to the new parent and add the step relationship to the stepparent (and do you also add biological relationships, if known, at the same time?).

If any of the yes answers other than 'always' (i.e. usually often sometimes rarely), what criteria do you use for deciding to add or not add the step relationship ? For example, you usually only add step info if the child is under 20 years old at time of re-marriage you would add it, but not if (example) the child was 40 years old at time of re-marriage. I'm mostly just trying to figure out what others normally do.

note: Step relationship does not automatically mean "adopted" which is a legal term. But sometimes the stepparent will also adopt their stepchild. (I have a niece who was legally adopted by stepfather/her mother's new husband)

FamilySearch Data Visualization/GIS mapping - Update / next release / enhancement request

f you could click or touch one button on FamilySearch and see a visual representation of a person's life and Temple work (attached examples), what would you think about that? I think it would be nice to see:
L: where the ancestor lived

B: where they were baptized

C: where they were confirmed

I: where their Initiatory was completed

E: where their Endowment was completed

SS: where their Sealing to Spouse was completed

SP: where their Sealing to Parents was completed

How To Mark Person as Illegitimate

I'm curious on how it is best to mark a person as illegitimate.

To assist me when viewing the fanchart, I've used the convention of including the symbols (*) after the surname, however I see a Data Problem message "Invalid Characters - The Vital name contains invalid characters."

In addition, for their respective father I use the symbols ?!

Records wrong, what do I do?

My ancestor was living with her parents and her father's family. The census lists her as her grandfather's daughter, not her father's daughter. So, Father, Mother, Child 1, Child 2, Child 3, Daughter-in-law, Daughter. Except Daughter is the daughter of Child 3, not the Father. So, the census taker wrote it wrong.

How do I fix this?

Population registers of Longchamps-lez-Dhuy, Namur, Belgium

https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/1406460?availability=Family%20History%20Library

These are not available for me. Would they be at my local familysearch library or is this something that can only be seen in St. Lake City?

Alternatively if there is someone with access, and would care to look for a person, please PM me.

Thanks

Are decreased people hidden if parents are alive?

I, unfortunately, have a few relatives who are deceased, but their parents are living.

I found a tree a few relatives have made and contributed to on FS, and it shows my direct grandparents, but their children are alive (my aunts and uncles) but a few of them have deceased children, but aren't showing and would've thought they'd be input, are they not showing because their parents are living?

Help me find information on my grandmother’s murder

In search of information regarding the shooting of my grandmother in Richardson Texas on April 6th 1978. I have been told by my father of her death but not many details that surround it, so I’m an at a standstill in my research. I’ve tried looking up court record but I am not 100% sure I have her murderers name correct. The only details I have are as follows:

  1. Grandmother’s Name (the victim) - Bettye Marie Price. On her death certificate it is shown as Bettye P Price.

2.Date of death - April 6, 1978 I have attached her death certificate for more Information.

  1. Grandmother’s assailant- Betty Jean Murphy (not too sure on the last name unfortunately)
  2. Killed grandmother with a gunshot to the chest. Believed my grandmother was having g an affair with her husband (this may or may not be true).

If there is anyone who can give me any details, information, or even just where to start looking I would appreciate it. Already checked Dallas county court record online with zero results and no information on Myancestory.com

1890 Census!

Well, sort of. I believe this just showed up. It's only Civil War soldiers who fought for the USA and their widows. (But I'm sure a few rebels snuck in there.)

https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/1877095

It's probably as good as we'll ever get for this year.

I can’t believe how my great-great-great-great-grandmother ended up here

She died in Bahia, northeastern Brazil. It was quite common for male European adventurers to end up in colonial Brazil and marry natives, but an English lady is very unusual. She really existed, or did someone fake this lineage? Person code G3GX-JJZ (FamilySearch). Thanks

FamilySearch Labs Full Text Search - Extremely Helpful

The Full Text feature of Family Search Labs has been extremely helpful in my research. Mostly I’ve been going through land records, but some of the Wills and Probate documents have been very helpful. I think this needs to be expanded more.

For one, I may have discovered possibly a 4GG Aunt that wasn’t mentioned in the United Empire Loyalist books under her father. However, other documents in the Full Text search list her under a different last name, but her “father” has been listed on another document. His middle name is her last name on a different document. Her name is Mirende (Myrende Simon) Linox, her father is supposedly William Simmon Place. So I’m on the case to unfold this mystery.

Anyways, I’m really interested in the Loyalist side of my family. Which seems to be only on my father’s side of the family. I have a lot of questions.

Family in Latvia

Hi, I'm just doing my family tree, and I'm trying to search the siblings of my great grandfather. But he moved to Brazil and change his name from Janis (something like that) to João(pt). But I have his right last name. How can I possibly look for the right names from there? Like I know of the possibility this be the short for his name. His parents is Clovis Saus and Bine Saus. How can I wrote this names in latvian? He had a sister called Catalina Saus, but I know the possibility that is not written right. Someone can help me?

Is there a way I can find out if my grandmother is related to another person that isn’t in a tree

My grandmother always claimed that she was related to a professional football player from the 1960’s. We have believed her since the 1980’s she has passed on and my son has wanted a jersey with this guys name on it if we are related. This player grew up in the same town as my grandmother I’m just wondering is she took some hometown liberties.
