Hi. I'm visiting Minnesota from the UK in July next year. My main reason for visiting is i'm going on a 4 day camping trip to the BWCAW, setting off from Ely. What is the best way of getting to Ely from Minneapolis? I have been looking at hire cars and while that is looking like the best option, I have a situation where I will be renting a car and leaving it in Ely for the 4 days while i'm out camping which seems like a bit of a waste of money. I will also have extra bags with me that I won't be able to take camping with me so will need storage for those and I was thinking just leaving them in the hire car would be the best situation. Is there a better way of doing this that I am missing? Is there public transport I could get from Minneapolis instead and then some bag storage options in Ely? I have checked with my outfitter and they don't offer a shuttle service unfortunately. Someone suggested on another subreddit I could rent a U-Haul in Minneapolis and then return it in Ely? Could this be feasible? Thanks!
Hello, was just up in the BWCA over the past few days, drove through town and only the old flag was up on the main stretch. What gives?
Our family vacations in Ely almost every year. This year it seems a lot quieter than usual. Any reason why or is my perception just off?
Also is the Frisky Otter any good? Any other recommendations?
Edit for my opinions on food:
Frisky Otter was better than I anticipated. Good service and good food.
Boathouse seems to have been bought out and quality has went down drastically.
Stony Ridge was decent but nothing like it used to be ~5 years ago.
Insula was good.
Hi Ely fam! I have a friend who lives there and I would like to send them a package. Would they have an easy local drop off way to ship a return if the item doesn't fit? Or would they have to drive a ways?
Thanks for the assist. I don't want to ask them since it is a surprise.
Great time up in Ely over the fourth of July during the all class reunion!!
Good job Ely!!
I’m on echo trail and the rain is hitting hard af.

Please Help
Last night Reis Grams was fishing next to Curtain Falls and in an effort to help a friend his canoe went over the falls. Reis has been missing since and thus far there has been no sign of him or the canoe he was in. His brother also went over the falls but was found quickly and airlifted to safety. Search and rescue is currently in the area looking for him.
Reis is an experienced outdoorsman and well educated on how to handle survival scenarios. If he survived the fall he is likely injured and waiting for help. I understand this is extremely difficult terrain and a hard area to access. Maybe you were headed out there anyway. Maybe you have a friend already in the area with a satellite phone or you know someone experienced in this kind of search and rescue who can help. Or maybe you are just a kind human willing to look for a husband and father of two children who needs your help. If you have the ability to help look for Reis, please help.
He generally wears darker clothing, greys or blues. A recent picture is attached to this post.
Please PM me with any questions or offers of assistance.
